Procedure Checklist
Assisting with an Amniocentesis

1. Explain to patient the need/purpose of procedure and how it will be done.
2. Ensure that informed consent is signed.
3. Have the woman empty her bladder, if the fetus is more than 20 weeks
gestation.
4. Assemble equipment’s.
5. Provide privacy.
6. Assist patient to lie in dorsal position.
7. Check the maternal vital signs and fetal heart rate.
8. Wash hands and don sterile gloves.
9. Start I/V fluids in accordance with institutional policy.
10. Administer terbutaline SC or IV or ritodrine IV per institutional policy.
11. An ultrasound examination is performed and the placenta localized and a
pool of liquor found.
12. Drape the area with sterile towels.
13. Prepare abdominal wall aseptically.
Assist the physician in infiltration the proposed site of puncture with 2ml
14. of 1% of lignocaine.
Ensure adequate time between infiltration of local anesthetic and
15. introduction of needle into the amniotic sac.
Assist physician while inserting the needle and stylette through the
16. abdominal wall into the uterus, under direct ultrasound guidance. The
stillette is then withdrawn and few drops of liquor are discarded.
Physician withdraws 10-20ml of amniotic fluid for analysis or a smaller
17. amount if the amniocentesis is performed in the first trimester.
As physician withdraws the needle, keep dressing gauze and place an
18. adhesive bandage over the puncture site.
Monitor the woman during the procedure for signs of premature labor,
19. bleeding or fetal distress.
20. Discard the used materials.
21. Remove and discard the gloves.
22. Wash hands.
23. Replace articles in the utility room
24. Obtain maternal vital signs and a 20 mint fetal heart tracing.
Instruct the woman to report signs of bleeding, unusual fetal activity,
25. abdominal pain, cramping or fever while at home after the procedure.
Label the specimen container adequately, including the estimated weeks
26. of gestation and EDD. Send the specimen to laboratory for investigation
immediately.
Record the procedure done, date, time, name of physician who perform
27. the test, maternal and fetal response and details of specimen taken.
