Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear learners, can continue your
studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions, exercises, and discussions
are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step as you
discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in each SLM. This will tell
you if you need to proceed on completing this module or if you need to ask your facilitator or
your teacher’s assistance for better understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you
need to answer the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are also provided to our
facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on how they can best help you on your
home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on any part of this SLM. Use
a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises and tests. And read the instructions
carefully before performing each task.
If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator.
Thank you.

Gathering Statistical Data

Gathering/collection of data is an important part of statistics. Data should be collected in a

manner that they are accurate and convenient to use.
Data is a collection of facts or information. They may be gathered by using the following
methods.
Conducting Written Surveys
Conducting Online Surveys
Observing the Outcome of Events
Taking Measurements in Experiments
Reading Statistical Publication

The interview method and the questionnaire method can be used in conducting surveys.

The interview method is done when a person solicits information from another person. The
person gathering the data is called the interviewer, while the person supplying the data is the
interviewee.

If a survey involves a series of questions, the interview method will be very tedious one
to employ. Hence, the questionnaire method is advisable. The firm prepares a printed
questionnaire and distribute these to several respondents who shall in turn answer the
questionnaire and give it back to the firm. In a school that wishes to upgrade classroom
instruction, the administration usually ask students to rate their teachers in different criteria by
asking to fill out an evaluation form.

Behavioral scientists are primarily concerned with the behavior of either an individual
or group of individuals. The data are gathered either individually or collectively by means of
observation. The person who gathers the data is called an investigator while the person being
observed is called the subject.

Not all surveys gather information about people. There are surveys about cars, building, mobile
apps, TV shows, etc.

The physicist and chemist make use of the experimentation method in gathering data.

The following questions involve experimentation.

Will the fertilizer produce more rice?
Can a sawdust be substituted for sand in the production of hallow blocks?

Is it possible to produce paper from the manure of cows?

Example 1:

Mrs. Cruz wants to find the number of students in her advisory class who have birthdays
falling on each of the 12 months. She collects the data in the following manner:
Check the date of birth of each student in the class registry.
Ask the students to raise their hands if their birthdays fall in a certain month.
Make a form and ask the students to write their birthdays and return the form to her.
Make a google form and ask the students to answer it through online.
Solution:
Reading publication
Observing outcome
Conducting written survey
Conducting online survey

Example 2:
A restaurant manager requests his/her customers to fill out this questionnaire.

Check their grades in the class registry.
Design a form and ask the students to fill out the previous grades and return the form to
him/her.
Ask the students to raise their hand if their grade fall within the specific grade.

Name the data-collection method used in each case by the geometry teacher.
