Lesson
Distinguish between General
1 and Specific Statement
A sentence is a group of words or phrases that form a statement. A statement
that gives information is classified into general and specific statement.
General Statement is a sentence that defines or declares some large and
broad information. It does not describe one particular event. It is usually express as
the general idea of a piece of writing. Specific Statement refers to the exact and
precise description. It provides evidence to further define the general idea or general
statement. Being able to recognize whether a statement is specific or general is a key
to understand how sentences operate in the given statement.
In this module, you are going to distinguish the difference between the two.
Activities given are well provided for you to understand. There is guided information
for you to catch up with the topic.
What’s In
We already know what sentences are. Let me check if you understand the following
below.
Indicate which picture describes each sentence. Encircle the correct letter.
1. There is a bouquet of flowers
arranged on top of the table.
a. b.
2
2. The children are using the
pedestrian lane in crossing the

3. I saw a kite flying above the a. b.

Notes to the Teacher
This module will guide you properly to distinguish the
difference between general and specific statement. It also enhances
the learner’s critical and analytical skills in reading.
What’s New
Study the example below.
Main idea: Land Transportation
Related Words:
bicycle
tricycle
motorcycle
3
Now, let’s give it a try!
Complete the table below. Give the main idea of the following set of words.
Main idea Related words
Mt. Mayon, Mt. Pinatubo, Mt. Taal
guitar, piano, drums
Mercury, Earth, Mars
happy, mad, excited,
Impressive!
In the given activity, you will find that the words on the left side of the table provide
evidence to further define words in the right.
Planet
Earth
Mercury
Mars
Planet, for example is more general than the words
Mercury, Earth and Mars. There are many words that can be
classified as planets other than example above like Venus and Jupiter. Therefore,
the examples given are the specific ideas or related words of the Planet.
What is It
Read the following pair of statement:
1. a. The doctors are heroes of pandemic.
b. Dr. Salvador from Bataan Hospital treats Covid-19 patient.
2. a. Nurse expands lives as frontline members of health care.
b. Nurse Mary provides hope and care to their patient.
4
3. a. A teacher helps people to learn.
b. An English teacher is responsible for ensuring pupils learn proper grammar,
writing and reading comprehension.
What is the difference
between the first and
second sentences?
The first sentences (a.) are more general than the second sentences (b.).
Let’s identify the what is
general and specific statement.
Let’s start with no. 1 example. First sentence (a) is a general statement as it
covers broad categories or group of people like “doctors.” Second statement (b) is
very specific as it talks about a particular individual named “Dr. Salvador,” that
supports the statement, “Doctors are heroes of pandemic.
Statements are classified as general and specific. General Statement
expresses the main point. Specific Statement provides evidence that define
general statement.
When you read “The doctors are heroes of pandemic.”, you will know that
this is a general statement and “Dr. Salvador from Bataan Hospital treats Covid-
19 patient.”, is a specific statement. It is because of the word or group of words
used and how the idea was presented.
The doctors are heroes of pandemic.
GENERAL covers the group of doctors
Dr. Salvador from Bataan Hospital treats Covid-19 patient.
SPECIFIC refers to a particular individual
support the first statement
“doctors are heroes”.
