Learning Activity Sheet Practical Research 2: Quarter 1 Week 6

This document provides guidance on developing a conceptual framework, including defining its components like variables, relationships, and paradigms. It explains that a conceptual framework illustrates the scope and theories of a study. The document also provides examples of frameworks like input-process-output and independent-dependent variable models and includes practice tasks to help students understand how to construct a conceptual framework.

LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET

PRACTICAL RESEARCH 2
Quarter 1 Week 6

L I. LEARNING SKILLS

At the end of this learning activity sheet, I will be able to illustrate and explain
the conceptual framework.

II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

Conceptual Framework
The conceptual framework provides an explanation of the scope and range of
a concept or construct and discusses cases that combine two or more theories. This
framework guides the researcher in synthesizing the different theories used in
formulating a new one.
Researchers create conceptual frameworks that include a philosophical and
methodological model to help design their work. The data collection and analysis are
also based on the theoretical and conceptual framework. Miles and Huberman (1994)
defined a conceptual framework as a visual or written product, one that ‘explains,
either graphically or in narrative form, the main things to be studied—the key factors,
concepts, or variables—and the presumed relationships among them. One of the most
important things about conceptual framework is that it primarily becomes the model of
what is out there that you plan to study.
Guide on How to Make the Conceptual Framework

Do a literature review.

Identify the variables in the

study.
Generate the conceptual
paradigm.

Write your narrative.

Paradigm of the Study
The result of a clear understanding of the conceptual framework is a
diagrammatic presentation of the study called the paradigm. To create a paradigm,
you need to consider the three components. These are boxes, lines and arrows. Boxes
means variables, lines pertain to connection or correlation, and arrow denotes causal
influence or cause-effect relationship. These three components are commonly seen in
a conceptual paradigm.
Input-Process-Output (IPO) Model is one of the most used paradigms that
seek to understand a factor or variable that causes a problem or change in the subject.
This model is largely used when the research attempts to isolate the factor or major
variable that causes the problem, subject or phenomenon under investigation.
This type of conceptual framework is used when there is a system or procedure
to be tested on specific outputs. In fact, the input should contain the variables to be
tested while the process should contain the procedure on how the data will be unified
leading to an expected output.

Independent variable-Dependent variable (IV-DV) Model is used in

experiment-based studies. Independent variables refer to the presumed cause while
dependent variables refer to the presumed effect.

Key point:
A framework is comprised of different concepts and theories that serve as the
building blocks to strongly clarify the bases of the study.
The conceptual framework is the researcher’s idea on how the research
problem will have to be explored. It embodies the specific direction will have to be
undertaken.

A. Arrow
B. Box
C. Circle
D. Line
2. It is used to illustrate what researchers expect to find through research, including
how the variables relate to each other.
A. Conceptual framework
B. Research Protocol
C. Statement of the problem
D. Theoretical Framework
3. Which of the following may be included in constructing conceptual paradigm?
i. Abstract
ii. Dependent Variable
iii. Independent Variable
iv. Moderating Variable
A. ii and iii only
B. i and iv only
C. ii, iii, and iv only
D. i, ii, iii, and iv
For items 4 and 5, refer to the figure below.

Number of hours Number of study hours

in social media

4. Which illustrates cause-effect relationship?

A. Arrow
B. Box
C. Side
D. None of these
5. What best explains the paradigm?
A. The paradigm cannot be explained.
B. The output of the number of hours in social media is the number of study
hours.
C. The study aims to determine if the number of study hours depends on the
number of hours in social media.
D. The study would like to determine if the number of hours in social media
depends on the number of study hours.

B. Practice Task 2

Direction: Identify whether the statement describes conceptual framework or

theoretical framework.
1. Broader in scope as it can be used in different studies
2. More focused on scope as it directly relates to the study
3. A set of related concepts that will be specifically used in the study
4. Already existing prior to the conduct of the study
5. May combine different theories into one cohesive framework

Assessment

Direction: Develop the conceptual framework of your study. Construct the conceptual
paradigm of your study. Use a separate sheet for your answer.
