Lesson
Weather Components in a Weather
1 Chart and Weather Instruments

Weather is a part of our everyday lives. The clothes we wear, the

activities we do, and even the place we go depends on the weather that
we have on a particular day.
As active children, we enjoy playing outside and doing outdoor
activities. Observing the weather condition will help us decide the kind of
activities we will do for the day. Each one of us must be concerned about
the weather because knowing the weather condition helps us to be safe
and prepare for dangers and calamities.
In this module, the learners will be able to understand the different
components in a weather chart and the weather instruments that are used
in telling the weather. Let’s all read, understand and learn!

What’s New
Curious Danny
by Carlota B. Liwag

One fine morning while Danny and his dad were eating their
breakfast, his Dad told the family not to wear thick clothes and not to stay
outside for too long mostly during the afternoon because it would be a
sunny day.
Puzzled by what his Dad had said, Danny asked “How do you know
that Dad?”
“I’m a weather forecaster Danny, we use different weather
instruments in forecasting the weather,” answered Dad.
“What is a weather instrument dad?” asked Danny.
“Weather instruments are devices used in measuring different
weather components such as temperature, air pressure, wind speed and
wind direction. We use thermometer, barometer, anemometer and wind
vane.”
Guide Questions:
1. According to Danny’s dad, what will be the weather today?
2. What do you call the devices used in measuring different weather
components?
3. What are the different weather components mentioned in the
story?
4. What are the different weather instruments?
5. How does weather instruments help in forecasting the weather?
9
What is It

What are the different weather

components in a weather chart?
What are the different weather
instruments used in measuring
these weather components?

Weather Chart and its Components

Weather charts contain weather components which determine the
weather condition at any given time. The daily weather report is
important. We should give accurate data on air temperature, wind
speed, wind direction, and sky condition (Abutay et al., 2015).

Temperature is a measure of how hot or cold the air is. It refers to

the hotness or coldness of the air surrounding in a certain place.
Temperature can differ according to place and time.

Wind speed can be defined as light, moderate, and strong. Wind

speed refers to how fast the wind blows. The speed of the wind tells how
fast the weather will change (Abutay et al., 2015).

Wind direction refers to the direction from which the wind comes.
The direction of the wind tells the kind of changes in weather. Winds
from the North usually bring cool weather while winds from the south
usually bring warm weather (Abutay et al., 2015).

10
Sky condition describes the state of the cloud. It can be defined
as clear, fair, cloudy, partly cloudy, and dark (Villona & Catris, 2015).
Observing the sky condition helps in determining the weather for a
particular time of the day.

Weather Instruments
Weather instruments are the devices used in measuring the
different weather components.

Room Thermometer
A room thermometer is used to measure air
temperature (Abutay et al., 2015). It has numbers
imprinted on each side. A thermometer may have
Fahrenheit scale, Celsius scale, or both. As we can
see from the figure, Fahrenheit and Celsius have
different scales. Zero degree Celsius is equal to 32
degrees Fahrenheit.
The thermometer on the picture shows 38°C,
which means that the air temperature is hot. The
higher the temperature, the hotter the air.

Wind Vane
A wind vane is an instrument that gives the
direction of the wind. The four letters E, W, N, and
S represent the four directions: East, West, North
and South (Villona & Catris, 2015).
If the arrowhead of the wind vane faces the
south direction, we say, the wind is blowing south.
It is the south wind. If it blows from the west, it is the
west wind. If the arrowhead points between south
and west, we say, the wind is blowing southwest.

11
Anemometer
According to Abutay et al. (2015),
anemometer is an instrument used in
measuring the wind speed and direction. It has
four cups mounted on arms attached to a
rotating shaft.
As the wind blows faster, the cups turn
faster too. When the wind blows gently, the
cups of the anemometer turn slower. A change
in speed in the movement of the cups indicates
a change in the speed of the wind.

Barometer
A barometer is an instrument that is
used to measure the air or atmospheric
pressure in a certain environment. Pressure
tendency can predict short-term changes in
the weather (Villona & Catris, 2015).

What I Can Do

Make an improvised wind vane by following the given instructions.

What do we need: straw, scissors, ruler, plastic drinking cups with cover
(cover can be improvised), pebbles, sand, marking pen, cardboard, stick,
and push pin
What to do:
Note: Be careful in handling all the materials. Ask for help from your
guardians.
1. Cut a slit in each end of a drinking straw.
2. Cut the cardboard into triangle and arrow tail.
3. Put the cut triangle and arrow tail into the slots of the straw and glue
it.
4. Attach the straw into the stick by using a push pin or any kind of pin.
5. Get the plastic cup and fill it with pebbles/sand and put the lid cover.
Mark N, E,W,S on the lid cover.
6. Put the stick with straw through the bottom of the container.

Using your improvised wind vane, go outside your house and observe the
wind vane. Answer the following questions and write it on a separate sheet
of paper.
1. What happened to the arrow as the wind blew?
2. What is the first direction where the arrowhead pointed?
3. Did the direction of the wind change after some time?
4. What does the changes in the direction of the arrow indicate?
