Some of the most common words have
abbreviated shorthand spellings called brief
forms. The nine brief forms in this lesson are all
written with single shorthand symbols. Since these
words occur often in our language, their brief
forms are a major source of writing speed.

Some brief forms can be used for


longer words by making the brief
forms plural or past tense, or by
adding a common prefix or a common
suffix by such as –ing. One brief-form
derivative is possible using the

As you have just learned, we save time by


using easily written outlines for common,
frequently used words, called brief forms.
Another device for saving time is “phrasing”
the writing of two or more words together
as one outline called a phrase.

You write what you hear
The s symbol represents the soft sound of c as in face.

The past-tense d has the sound of either d or t. in shorthand, remember, you


write what you hear.

The symbol for s, f, and v are downward right curves differentiated by


length.
SOUND OF S
The s symbol is a short downward curve. Because of its size, slope, and
direction, it is often called the comma s. The s stroke resembles the longhand
comma.

The letter s often has the z sound in longhand. In shorthand the s is always used
for the sound of z.

SOUND OF F
The shorthand character for f is a medium-sized downward curve. It
has the same shape as s but is twice the size of s.
F WORDS

The v symbol is a long downward curve. It has the same shape as f but
twice its size.
