Welcome to Grade 11 Empowerment Technologies Self-Learning Module (SLM) on Introduction
to Information and Communication Technologies! This module was made to provide you with fun and
meaningful time for guided and independent learning at your convenience. You will be able to pro-
cess the contents of this Module while being an active learner.

To You, Parent/s, Guardian/s and Learning Facilitator/s:


This Module was collaboratively developed and reviewed by the teachers, school heads and
supervisors of DepEd Division of Cabanatuan City to assist you in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their different constraints in schooling. As
a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module. You also need to
keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage their own learning. Furthermore,
you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
This Module is about the basic knowledge and introduction of Information and Communication
Technologies. It improves your knowledge on how ICT affects your everyday lives. It also helps you to
determine the different nuances or shade of meaning of online platforms, sites and content.

What is Information and Communication Technologies?

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) deals with the


use of different communication technologies such as mobile
phones, telephone, internet, etc. to locate, save and edit infor-
mation.
Think of it, when we make a video call, we use internet. When we
send text o make a call, we use cellular networks. We can also
use payphones which use a telephone network. Meaning, having
a unified and connected way to communicate is one of the goals
of ICT.
Take a quick look a the picture. Then, reflect on the importance
of each icon in your daily living. See? ICT really helps us not only
you as student but also your community.

To fully understand the importance of ICT, look at your community. Look for a small business around your com-
munity and conduct an online interview of the business owner using the following guide:

Web 2.0: Dynamic Web Pages

The internet is essential tool nowadays. It is important to our modern lives that is why it is also important
to make the best and advance internet.
When the World Wide Web was invented, most web pages were “static”. Static in the sense that the page
is “as is” and cannot be edited or manipulated by the user. It is also known as Web 1.0.
However, the World Wide Web is more that just static pages. And now Web 2.0 came to the picture. This
term was coined by Darcy DiNucci on January 1999 in her article titled, “Fragmented Future”.
Web 2.0 is the evolution of Web 1.0 by adding dynamic web pages where the user is able to see a web-
site differently than others. Examples of Web 2.0 include social networking sites, blogs, wiki, video sharing,
hosted services and web applications. Web 2.0 allows users to interact with the page instead of just reading
the page, the user may be able to comment or create a user account. Most websites the we visit today are Web
2.0.

Features of Web 2.0

The key features of Web 2.0 include:


1. Folksonomy –allows users to categorize and classify information using freely chosen keywords (e.g., tag-
ging) Popular social networking sites such as twitter and Facebook use tags to start with the pound sign
(#).
2. Rich User Experience –content is dynamic and is responsive to user’s input.
3. User Participation –the owner of the website is not only one who is able to comments, reviews, and eval-
uation.
4. Long Tail –services that are offered on demand rather than on a one-time purchase.
5. Software as a Service –users will subscribe to a software only when needed rather than purchasing them
6. Mass participation –diverse information sharing through universal web access.

Varied Online Platforms

In your previous activity, you had successfully chosen familiar and unfamiliar icon/s from presented pic-
ture. Now let’s find out the different online platforms shown in the previous picture. Take a closer look at the
Trivia/Glossary of Terms. The list contains some key phrases that characterize the ICT tools that, when used
properly, can empower users to make positive social change.

Trivia/Glossary of Terms
1. Convergence - Technological convergence is the synergy of technological advancements to work on a
similar goal or task. For example, besides using you desktop computer to create word documents, you
can now use your smartphone.
2. Social Media - Social Media is a website, application, or online channel that enables web users to create,
co-create, discuss, modify, and exchange user generated content.
Types of Social Media
• Social Networks. These are sites that allow you to connect with other people with the same interest
or background.
• Bookmarking Sites. These are sites that allow you to store and manage links to various websites
and resources. Examples: Pinterest and StumbleUpon.
• Social News. These are sites that allow users to post their own news items or links to other news
sources.
• Media Sharing. These sites allow you to upload and share media content like images, music, and
videos. Examples: Youtube and Instagram.
• Microblogging. These sites focus on short updates from the user. Those subscribed to the user will
be able to receive these updates. Example: Twitter.
• Blogs and Forums. These websites allow users to post their content. Other users are able to com-
ment on the said topic. Examples: tsikot.com and Mobilarian.com
3. Mobile Technologies
• iOS - used in Apple devices such as iphone and ipad.

• Android - an open source operating system developed by Google.

• Blackberry OS - Used in blackberry devices.

• Windows Phone OS - a closed source and proprietary operating system developed by Microsoft.

• Symbian - the original smartphone OS; used by Nokia devices.

• WebOS - originally used for smartphones; now used for smart TVs

• Windows Mobile - developed by Microsoft for smartphones and pocket PCs

3. Assistive Media - Assistive media is a non-profit service designed to help people who have visual and
reading impairments. A database of audio recordings is used to read to the user.

This SLM discussed a necessary knowledge about
introduction to Information and Communication Technology.
It aims to equip you the foundation of understanding about
ICT. It also introduces the different nuances of online plat-
forms, sites and content. Specifically, you will also be famil-
iarized with the vital features of Web 2.0 to enhance your
knowledge and skills in using the web.
I suggest that you read this module carefully and
comprehensively. Start your journey by answering the pre-
test to assess your prior knowledge about the subject. I
hope you will accomplish it honestly. I trust your honesty
