INTRODUCTION

A solar tracker is a device used for orienting a solar photovoltaic panel or lens
towards the sun using the solar or light sensors connected with the machine.. This
project has been designed keeping this in view to make the harnessing of solar energy
more efficient.

Sun Tracking Solar Panel Using Arduino project is based on Arduino

controller board which controls the various activities of the project. A Solar Panel is
used to harness solar energy. Also, since a panel which is incident to the sun can gather
more amount of solar energy, the solar panel is attached to a motor.
OBJECTIVES
 This project helps the solar power generating equipment to get maximum sun light
automatically thereby increasing the efficiency of the system. The solar panel tracks
the sun from east to west automatically for maximum intensity of light.

 To construct a model prototype solar cell movement system with a mechanical

assemble to move the panel from 180 degree.

 To construct an emergency light inverter circuit i.e. to operate tube light with the help
of charged battery from the solar panel
COMPONENTS REQUIRED

 Solar Panel

 LDR

 Servo Motor

 ATmega328p

 Micro Controller

 9V Battery

 ARDUINO UNO

 Connecting Wires
BLOCK DIAGRAM

In this projects include design and construction of an arduino based solar tracker. This
solar tracker system uses the arduino board, a servomotor, 2 LDR and 2 resistors to rotate
the solar panel towards the sun or a source of light. In this project LDR was selected since
it has no polarity, and easy to interface with circuit, cheap, reliable and is described by
high spectral sensitivity, so that difference in high intensity is represented immediately by
change in its resistance value.
METHODOLOGY

PIN CONFIGURATION OF ARDUINO

In this project divided by two categories; hardware and software. The Arduino Uno is a
microcontroller board based on the ATmega328. It consumes 14 digital input/output
pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs), and 6 analog inputs.

In this project, LDR’s are working as light detectors. Before we go into detail, we will
have to understand how the LDR’s work. LDR (Light Dependent Resistor) also known
as photo resistor is the light sensitive device. Its resistance decrease when the light
falls on it and that’s why it is frequently used in Dark or Light detector circuit .Check
the various circuits based on LDR here.

The two LDR’s are placed at the two sides of solar panel and the Servo Motor is used
to rotate the solar panel. The servo will move the solar panel towards the LDR whose
resistance will be low, mean towards the LDR on which light is falling, that way it will
keep following the light. And if there is same amount of light falling on both the LDR,
then servo will not rotate. The servo will try to move the solar panel in the position
where both LDR’s will have the same resistance means where same amount of light
will fall on both the resistors and if resistance of one of the LDR will change then it
rotates towards lower resistance LDR
ADVANTAGES

 Solar tracking systems continually orient photovoltaic panels towords the sun
and can help maximize your investment in your PV system.

 One time investment, which provides higher efficiency & flexibility on dependency
over other sources.
 Tracking systems can help reducing emissions and can contribute against
global warming.

 It enhances the clean and emission free power production

DISADVANTAGES

 Initial investment is high on solar panels.

 It’s a bit of difficult for servicing, as the tracking systems are not quite popular
regionally.

 Moving parts and gears which will require regular maintenance.

 May require repair or replacement of broken parts over a long run.
APPLICATIONS

 It can be used in solar streets lighting system.

 It can be used in vehicles for battery charging.
 This project can be used for Solar water heaters.
 It can be used in vehicles for battery charging.
 Also it can be used for Solar inverters.
 Can be used form small & medium scale power generation.
 For power generation at remote places where power lines are not accessible.
 For domestic backup power systems.
CONCLUSION

 On one hand we can see the world’s energy resources depletion to be a major problem.

 On the other hand global warming, which is a major concern.

 Switching to solar power, which is clean and green and enhancing its efficiencyby using
sun trackers is a great option in the near future.
 An arduino solar tracker was designed and constructed in the current work. LDR light
sensors were used to sense the intensity of the solar light occurrence on the photo-voltaic
cells panel. Conclusions of this project is summarized as, The existing tracking system
successfully sketched the light source even it is a small torch light, in a dark room, or it is
the sun light rays. The Arduino solar tracker with servo motor is employed by means of
Ardiuno ATmega328p microcontroller. The essential software is developed via Arduino
Uno. The cost and reliability of this solar tracker creates it suitable for the rural usage. The
purpose of renewable energy from this paper offered new and advanced idea to help the
people.
