Week 1E - Rhythm Counting
RHYTHM is the word we use to describe when to play a note and for how long to play it.
Rhythm also includes when and for how long silence will be used in the music we play. In
written music, the shape of each note will tell you its rhythm.
The most basic symbols that we use for rhythm are the quarter note and the quarter rest.
For now, each of these symbols will last for one beat. A quarter note equals one beat of
sound, and a quarter rest equals one beat of silence.
In band, we use a numbered counting system below our notes. The numbers show on
which beat each note begins. For rests, we will place parentheses around the number to
represent the silence. The numbers start over after each bar line. A final bar line act likes
a period and marks the end of a line. Take a look at the example below:

first measure has been completed for you as an example. Remember, the first note or
rest after each bar line will start over at one. Not all lines will have the same number of
