Ask students at random to share the names of their favourite poems. Write the title of the unit on the
board and ask questions about it. Ask them to tell five different words related to the title of the poem.
One Thing at a Time
Main Activities/Concept Building: (25 mins)
Tell students that today they are going to start the new unit “One Thing at a Time”. Tell them that it’s a
poem about everyday tasks. Ask students to open their textbooks at page 1. Ask students to look at the
given pictures given in ‘Let’s Get Started’ and tell what the children are doing. Are they doing one task at a
time? Encourage them to share their daily routine with the class.
Ask students to open their textbooks at page 2. Ask them to look at the pictures of the poem and tell what
the children are doing. Encourage them to get involved in the poem by describing pictures and making
predictions.
Model reading the poem with correct pronunciation and intonation. Encourage them to recite the poem
themselves. Ask them to listen to it carefully and repeat it after you 3-4 times. Tell them that we should do
one task at a time as it is a good rule to get success in life. Encourage them to read correctly. Help them if
they need it. Tell the name of a poet to them.

pronounced as ‘k’. Now ask them to name a few things that start with the letter ‘g’. They may say giraffe,
gun, gate, goat, etc. Tell them that giraffe has the ‘j’ sound; it is a soft ‘g’, while in gun, gate, goat begin
with a hard ‘g’.
Main Activities/Concept Building: (25 mins)
Tell students that today they are going to learn hard and soft sounds of the letters ‘c’ and ‘g’. Explain to
them that when the letter ‘c’ or ‘g’ is followed by ‘a’, ‘o’, or ‘u’, it makes a hard /k/ or /g/ sound. When the
letter ‘c’ or ‘g’ is followed by ‘e’, ‘i', or ‘y’, it makes a soft /s/ or /j/ sound. However, there are a few
exceptions. Ask them to open their textbooks at page 3. Read statement (i) from the ‘Phonics’ section. Ask
them to read and say the hard and soft sounds of the letters ‘c’ and ‘g’.
Activity 1:
Write some words on the board with the hard and soft sounds of the letter ‘c’ and ‘g’. Ask them to identify
if a word has a hard or a soft sound of the letters ‘c’ and ‘g’.

Explain to students that social courtesies like ‘please’, ‘thank you’, and ‘excuse me’ make other people feel
appreciated and respected. You can show kindness and respect for other people’s feelings by speaking
politely to them. Ask students to tell what they already know about using social courtesies. Be sure the
following points are discussed:
Always say “thank you" when someone gives you a gift or makes a compliment or does something for
you.
Say “please" when you are asking someone to give you something or to do something for you.
Say “excuse me" when your body makes an embarrassing noise such as a burp, hiccup, sneeze, etc.
When starting a conversation, it is polite to first ask, “How are you?"

Tell them that ‘a’ and ‘an’ are called indefinite articles. ‘The’ is called the definite article. Ask them to open
their textbooks at page 6. Discuss the rules of definite and indefinite articles with them. Explain to them
that ‘a’ is used before singular nouns that begin with a consonant sound. ‘An’ is used before singular nouns
that begin with a vowel sound. Tell them that there are different rules to use definite article ‘the’. ‘The’ is
used when we know there is only one of a particular thing. ‘The’ is also used with the names of rivers, seas,
oceans and mountains. ‘The’ is also used before a noun if we repeat it. Now read statement (iii) from the
‘Grammar’ section. Read the given sentences and explain the use of articles. Ask them to read the given
sentences with correct pronunciation.

the rules of definite and indefinite articles with them. Also have them recall that ‘a’ is used before singular
nouns that begin with a consonant sound. ‘An’ is used before singular nouns that begin with a vowel
sound. Tell them that there are different rules to use definite article ‘the’. ‘The’ is used when we know
there is only one of a particular thing. ‘The’ is also used with the names of rivers, seas, oceans and
mountains. ‘The’ is also used before a noun if we repeat it.
Now ask them to open their textbooks at page 7. Read statement (iv) from the ‘Grammar’ section. Ask
them to circle the correct articles in the given sentences. Encourage them to do their work on their own.

Opening Activities/Warm-up: (5 mins)
Greet students with Assalaamu Alaikum and encourage them to reply as well.
Recite Bismillah and encourage students to do the same. Try engaging students by asking them how
they’re doing. Encourage them to say, “Alhamdulillah”.
Write some sentences on the board without capitalisation. Ask students at random to come and rewrite
the given sentences. Appreciate them by clapping. Pay special attention to the weak students.
Main Activities/Concept Building: (27 mins)
Tell students that today they are going to learn rules of capitalisation. Have them recall the first letter of
the first word of a sentence is always capital. Tell them that names of people, places, pets and months
always start with a capital letter. Explain to them that we capitalise initial letters of the names of people.
We also capitalise the days of the week and months of the year. Ask them to open their textbooks at page
17. Read statement (vi) from the ‘Grammar’ section. Ask students to read the given sentences and notice
the use of capitalisation.
Activity 1:
Now read statement (vii) from the ‘Grammar’ section. Ask students to capitalise and punctuate the given
sentences. Ask them to take out their notebooks and start writing. Encourage them to do their work on
their own. Take rounds while they are doing their work. Help them if need be. Ask them to write neatly
with the correct spelling. Praise the students who finish their work first to boost their confidence.
