CHAPTER 1

COMMUNITY IMMERSION AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Community immersion is an important component of community

mobilization since it entails learning about many community issues, procedures,
complexities, and lifestyles through awareness and involvement in numerous
events. It's not the same as actual planning. One of the ways to get involved in
group organizing is through immersion. The venture may consist of a
combination of methods, such as joining, familiarizing, and participating in
community-building activities.

Community immersion is a community mobilization strategy that aims to

give NSTP trainees a greater understanding and realization of diverse community
issues by exposing them to real-life situations, particularly in the deprived,
depressed, and underprivileged (DDU) populations.

Immersion services place people in a new world for a set amount of time
in order to have realistic learning experiences. The person must be responsive to
the social, cultural, and/or political conditions under which they have been put
for full impact. This enables trainees to comprehend how others perceive,
experience, speak, and act in response to their circumstances and
circumstances in life as a way of feeling and realizing that they are more
privileged than many others.

CHAPTER 2

PRE-IMMERSION ACTIVITIES

Community situation under the new normal

During the COVID 19 pandemic, children we’re not taught how to read
and even write their own names since they don’t go to school. They mostly spend
their times playing outside and using cellular phones. They don’t have time to
study thus, some doesn’t know how to read yet and some just need to enhance
their reading skill

Profile of the beneficiaries

Name: Shane Eliffer O. Basas

Age: 08

Birthdate: March 12, 2014

Grade: 2

Address: Sagrada, Viga, Catanduanes

School: Sagrada Elementary School

According to her mother, she still needs to be taught how to read as she’s
still not good at it. At the age of 8 and a grade 2 pupil, she is having a hard time
reading especially English as she spends most of her time playing games with
her friends and watching television thus forget her modules. She fits as the
beneficiary for this project.

Consultation meeting with the beneficiary and faculty-trainer

I asked for guardian of the participant that I will having immersion

and I need their permission, so that I may conduct the activity
successfully.
Upon observing and entering the barangay sagrada, I saw some
aspects that should be prioritize. It is not unknown to all of us that we are
facing a huge crisis right now wherein it affected lots of people especially
the children. Children was deprived of lots of things that could possibly be
done if this didn’t’ happen. In our barangay or community, i noticed that
children are having a hard time coping with the new learning method
whereas teachers are unable to guide and teach them face-to-face. Parents
were also unable to teach their children as they have works to do. Many
children use to spend more times playing than studying. Then one of the
children ask me to help her study as he doesn’t understand a thing on her
modules because he doesn’t know how to read yet at the age of 8

CHAPTER 3

NSTP COMMUNITY-BASED IMMERSION

PROJECT UNDER NEW NORMAL

Planning of the Immersion Project

This project was a home-based immersion where i will only immerse myself
at home. I chose this as it secures and prioritizes my health and the health of
my participants at this time of pandemic.

This project was thoroughly planned to address the problems in the

barangay sagrada. I saw the needs of the coping up with the new normal since
teachers were unable to teach and guide them with the lesson. Parents can’t also
focus on teaching their children because of their works. Most of the pupils
spends more time playing than studying that’s why some are non-readers and
some needs improvement.

Thus, this project was done to address the issue and help the children

1. Cope up with the new normal

2. Teaching the non-readers to read
3. Enhance the children’s reading skills
4. To widen the imagination and stimulate curiosity

Implementation/Activity Taken

We began in preparing the facility and other tools such as chairs, table,
visual aids that we need for our immersion. Then we gathered and assist

4

the participant, at exactly 8:00 am in the morning we started our
immersion.

Specific Activity in Immersion

 Begun with Prayers and introducing myself

 Explain to her what we are going to do
 Know if the she knew alphabet and if she’s already familiar with it
 Flash visual aids, ask her on how to read what was showed on the board
 Explain what and the meaning of the flashed word or photo
 I gave her visual aids and reading material and assist her

Monitoring and Evaluation

As the implementer of the project, I also monitor and evaluate it. I made
sure that all the materials/papers are piled and are ready, before every
session, the participant should already eat breakfast and is prepared, the
room is clean and is good for teaching. After monitoring and gathering the
materials, I start with a prayer and begin the reading session.

After the session, I also make sure that the participant learned something
on what I discussed through giving her a simple quiz like asking her to read
simple words

Monitoring and Evaluating is important to make sure that everything is

prepared and ready. This helps to make sure that the immersion will be

successful.

FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

Findings

Based on the results of our community immersion in the aforementioned

barangay, I found that the children in Barangay Sagrada have met the desired
outcome. They show improvement and enhanced skills in terms of basic literacy
especially in reading.

The home-based project shows that children have gain knowledge as well
as lessen the parents and teachers’ workloads. It was proven that it is a
significant intervention.

CONCLUSION

The project was a significant intervention to the issue. It helped the pupils
to enhance their reading skills, help the teachers and parents to lessen their
woks, broaden the children knowledge and help the barangay to solve the issue
about the pupil having a hard time coping up with the new normal.

At the end of the immersion, the following objectives are met:

1. For the children to learn how to read

2. To help the parents and teachers lessen their work
3. To enhance and practice the children reading skills
4. Enhance and broaden the knowledge of the pupils.
5. To promote stronger analytical thinking
6. To widen the imagination and stimulate curiosity

RECOMMENDATION

Once in a week, there should be a tutoring and teaching session for the
children.

Barangay officials and teachers should coordinate with each other and
plan for possible programs that will be beneficial to the children of Barangay
Sagrada.

Parents should monitor or look for their children improvement and teach
them to enhance further their ability.

The mother and teachers will be benefited with this project as their works
