EIE101R01: Basic Electronics Engineering: Textbook and Materials

1) The document discusses different types of rectifiers used to convert AC voltage to DC voltage for use in electronic circuits. 2) It describes the half-wave rectifier in detail, including its components, conduction periods, output waveform, and performance parameters. 3) The half-wave rectifier uses a diode to allow current in one direction only, resulting in a pulsating DC output that can be smoothed using filter circuits.

Rectifiers
 An electronic device used for converting ac voltage
into unidirectional voltage

Rectifiers  All electronic circuits need a dc voltage for their

operation
 Supply voltage available is from the ac mains which
is 230 V, 50 Hz supply
 Rectifier will first step down the ac supply voltage to
the required level by using a step-down transformer
 Rectified voltage is a uni-directionally changing dc,
filter circuits are used to get steady dc output

 During the positive half cycle, i.e., from time 0 to π  During the negative half cycle of the input voltage
 Voltage is positive wave π to 2π
 Hence terminal A of the transformer, T is positive  Terminal A of the transformer will be negative and terminal
B will be positive
 Diode is forward biased
 Diode will be reverse biased
 Hence current will flow through the diode and through the
load resistance, RL  Virtually no current will flow through the diode and the load
 Function of the transformer will be to electrically
isolate the dc output circuit from the input circuit
