Let Us Study

Interpersonal Communication deals with the way we communicate and the

feedback that we can get out of it. We use this in many ways like introducing
ourselves to others, dealing with businesses, talking to our loved ones, buying
kinds of stuff, consultations, etc. We make use of it every single day of our
life.

Directions: Copy this in your answer sheet and check YES or NO to the
following questions below.
YES NO
1. Is it difficult for you to talk with other people?
2. Are you confident sharing your problems with your friends?
3. Do you want to be with your friends rather than to be alone?
4. In conversation, do you talk about things that are of interest to
both of you and the other person?
5. In conversation, do your words usually come out the way you
would like?
6. Are you aware of how your tone of voice may affect others?
7. Do you use courtesy words/phrases when talking to someone?
8. Do you prefer to have a group activity in the school?
9. In conversation, do you let the other person finish talking before
reacting to what she/he says?
10. Are you confident to express yourself to someone?

8
If you said YES to all of those questions, it means that you are
EXCELLENT in a way that you have positively developed your interpersonal
skills. 5-9 yes means there are ROOMS FOR IMPROVEMENT; you need to work
a little in communicating with others. A result of less than five yes means
TAKES ACTION. You need to work harder with your skills in dealing with other
people.
With this activity, you can assess how developed your communication is
in terms of interacting with people.
So come and explore this module. You will learn more about interpersonal
skills as we move on to the different activities of this module. Have Fun!

TIPS to have an Effective Interpersonal Communication

Don't Show Negative Body Language

If your body language is sending negative signals to the other person,
the communication will probably break down in the process.
Do Not Interrupt the Other Person
It is very rude to interrupt a person while they are speaking.
Nobody likes to be interrupted because it hampers the
thought process and it is disrespectful.
Think Before You Speak
You should think how your words are going to affect the person with
whom you are communicating before making any comments.
Listen Well
If you have good listening skills, you will be able to
understand that person’s words more clearly and react in
a positive manner. It will also send a signal to the other
person that you care about what he/she has to say.
Don't be Defensive or Attacking – Be Neutral
Be neutral and transparent so that you can understand what is actually
being discussed. Always maintain the balance in the conversation so
that everyone involved in the discussion has a fair part in it.
Don't Deviate
Always try to stick to the topic of discussion to maintain
the relevancy of the communication process.
Be Confident of Your Ideas
You should always be confident of what you are speaking and should
take ownership of your words. This will increase the trust that the other
people have in you and make the conversation flow more freely.

Be Open to Receive Feedback

You should be able to open up to feedback from the other
person and give honest feedback whenever you feel it is
needed.

14
Use the Right Communication Method
Communication may not necessarily always be verbal and you should
understand that different types of situations ask for different methods.
You should know which type of communication method will be more
effective.
Shake Hands Firmly!
Give a firm handshake but do not make it a tight one and
also do not squeeze. A weak handshake may indicate lower
self-confidence.
Following these tips will surely boost your confidence and the effectiveness of
the communication process.
