Assignment For Open Channel Hydraulics: Assignment No 2 Part I: Class Workout Assignments

1. The document outlines an assignment for an open channel hydraulics course. The assignment contains two parts: 2. Part I contains 6 classroom workout assignments involving calculations for critical depth in triangular channels, expressions for critical depth and Froude number in exponential channels, hydraulic exponents for trapezoidal and circular channels, critical discharge equations, and water surface elevations with drops and humps in rectangular channels. 3. Part II contains a submitted assignment involving calculations of water surface elevations for a rectangular channel with proposed contractions.

Part I: Class workout Assignments

1. Water flows in a  shaped channel shown in the figure critical depth is known to occur at
a section in this canal. Estimate the discharge and specific energy corresponding to an
observed critical depth of 1.40m.

2. For an exponential channel (A=k1ya) obtain explicit expressions for

a. Critical depth
b. Froude number
c. Hydraulic Exponent
3. Estimate the value of the first hydraulic exponent M for the following cases:
a. Trapezoidal channel with B=4.0m, m-2.0m, and y=0.2;1.0;2.0;and 4.0m
b. Circular channel of D=2.0m with y=0.2; 0.8;and 1.6m
4. Prove the following critical –discharge equations for =1 and H=specific energy head
a. Rectangular Qc= 3.087bH 1.5
b. Triangular Qc= 2.295ZH 2.5

5. A 5.0m wide rectangular channel carries a discharge of 6.40m3/sec at depth 0.8m. At a

section three is a smooth drop of 0.22m in the bed. What is the water surface elevation
downstream of the drop?

6. A rectangular channel is 4.0m wide and caries a discharge of 20m3/sec at a depth of 2.0m.
At a certain section it is proposed to build a hump. Calculate the water surface elevations
at upstream of the hump and over the hump if the hump height is
a. 0.33m
b. 0.20m (Assume no loss of energy at the hump)

Part II: Submitted Assignments

1. A rectangular channel is 2.5m wide and conveys a discharge of 2.75m3/sec at the depth of
0.9m. A contraction of width is proposed at a section in this channel. Calculate the water
surface elevations in the contracted section as well as in an upstream 2.5m wide section when
the width of the proposed contraction is
a. 2.0m
b. 1.5m (Neglect energy losses in the transition)
