Introduction:
What is freedom? What is the essence of freedom?
Freedom or Liberty is a social and political concept which has a great
significance in how people participate in society. The concept of freedom has emerged
as an important philosophical issue in the 18 th century Europe during the age of
enlightenment. Freedom is an intrinsic and essential property of the person. This means
that human person by nature is a free being and that it is in his/her nature to seek
freedom. An important indication of human freedom is the ability to make choices and
perform actions. Our freedom to act sets us apart from other beings. Freedom in a
political and social context means the freedom of an individual from oppression,
compulsion, or coercion from other persons, an authority figure, or from society itself.
The human person does not experience the world in the same way that animals do.
animals are extensively meaning their actions are more like predetermined responses to
certain stimuli. a person on the other hand can choose the course of action to take
giving a stimulus or faced with certain situation. our inherent freedom makes us very
dynamic creatures and our actions do not necessarily follow a set pattern or
predetermined course.

Lesson Proper:
A. What is freedom?
Freedom is understood as the power to be what you want to be and ability to
decide and create yourself. you may have a good idea of your personal identity at this point in
your life though we have certain inherent traits such as physical attributes temperaments and
many of the characteristics that define our personality are often a product of our choices
B. What is the essence of freedom?
Your freedom gives you the ability to strive to shape goals in your life. Freedom
is rooted in the human persons self-determination and the exercise of intellect and free will.
We can freely choose to be a good person and to act in a good way. A good act make makes
a person better while its opposite has a negative impact on him/her as a person this is the
nature of self-determination: that a person's actions determine what kind of person he/she
becomes
C. Kinds of Freedom
1. Physical Freedom= refers to the absence of any physical restraint. The person has the
freedom of mobility to go where he/she wants to go. He/she is not impeded in his or her
actions by any physical force. Granted that the person has natural limitation physical freedom
allows him/her to act and move in a determined manner you cannot be everywhere at once but
your freedom allows you to move from one place to another and to go wherever you want to
go.
2. Psychological Freedom= it is also called freedom of choice. the person is free to perform
actions that he/she considers right and wise. a person is also free to act or not to act.
psychological freedom is innate and cannot be denied a person. no outside force or influence
can compel a person to take actions against his/her will.
3. Moral Freedom= Means to use freedom in a manner that upholds human dignity and
goodness. Freedom is not an object that a person may use in whatever way he/she pleases. A
person must use his/her freedom to grow as a person. A person becomes more free when
he/she uses freedom well but become less free when he/she uses it in a bad way.
D. Different Ideas About Human Liberty:
1. Liberalism = upholds the preservation of individual rights and stresses the rule of the
government in protecting these civil liberties.
2. Libertarianism= believes that the individual, not the government is the best judge in
upholding and exercising rights.
3. Theological view= defines freedom as freedom from sin and living a life of righteousness.
Christians define freedom in the context of living in accordance with the will of God.
4. Socialism= considers freedom as the freedom to acquire economic resources and the
ability to work and act according to one's desire
5. Natural Rights= refers to rights which are innate in the person such as the right to life.
These rights are considered universal and inalienable.
6. Legal Rights= are rights that are based on society’s customs and laws and are enacted by
legislation and enforced by a government. The enjoyment of these rights is based on
citizenship.
E. Two elements that define freedom
1. Voluntariness= the ability of a person to act out of his/her own free will and self-
determination this means that the person may decide to act or not to act and these decisions
are made out of his/her own free will.
2. Responsibility= refers to the person being accountable for his/her actions and their
consequences. Taking responsibility can either mean a person voluntarily taking responsibility
for his/her own actions or being held responsible by other people. Responsibility can also have
a positive or negative meaning, and it goes hand in hand with voluntariness and determining
the morality of an action.
