Transport Stream Terms

The document defines key terms related to transport streams and the encoding and packaging of audio and video content. It describes elements like transport streams, transport packets, elementary streams, and packet identifiers. It also covers tables like the PAT, PMT, NIT, SDT, and EIT that contain information about programs, services, and events in the transport stream.

TS Transport Stream contains the pID.

TP Transport Packet -

Serves as a conduit (pipe) with a header and payload. Header

ES Elementary Stream Output of an audio or video encoder. ES contains only one kind of data e.g. audio, video, closed caption. Can be referred to as bitstreams. PID Packet Identifier Identifies a table or elementary stream. Demultiplexer extracts elementary streams from the TS by looking for packets with the same PID. PSI Program Specific Information PAT Program Association Table Lists all programs available in the TS. Each program in PAT has an associated value of PID for its PMT. PMT Program Map Table Contains information about programs. For each program there is one PMT. PMT includes program number and lists the elementary streams that comprise the described MPEG-2 program. PCR Program Clock Reference Helps decoder to present synchronised content e.g audio track matching a video. A PCR is transmitted in the adapatation field of an MPEG-2 TS packet. Used to generate a system timing clock in the decoder. STC System Timing Clock Provides highly accurate time base thgat is used to synchronize audio and video elementary streams. PTS Presentation time stamp Relative to the PCR Null Packets Can be used to fill up TS to provide a constant bit rate. NIT Network Information Table Conveys information about the way that multiplexes carrying transport streams are organized. Network in this context being one or more ways of delivering transport streams. SDT Service Description Table Describes which services are part of a TS. One SDT per transport stream. SDT may include the name of the service, service identifier, service status, and whether or not the service is scrambled. SOAP Simple Object Access Protocol Protocol specification for exchanging structured information in the implementation of web services. Relies on XML for its message format. SNMP Simple Network Management Protocol networks. Protocol for managing devices on IP

STS Statistics Time Slice Elementary period used in the computation of the statistic information.

STSL STS Length in time MIB Management Information Base Defines the available information.

CRC Cyclic Redundancy Check Designed to check accidental changes to raw computer data. Creates short, fixed length binary sequence both before and after receiving, and then compares. SI Service Information CAT Conditional Access Table Used for conditional access to the streams.

EMM Entitlement Management Message Specific to each subscriber as identified by the smart card in the receiver. DM Direct Monitoring PES Packetized Elementary Stream Specification that defines carrying of elementary streams in packets within MPEG program stream and MPEG transport stream. MDI Media Delivery Index Used to monitor quality of video stream as well as to show system margin for IPTV systems by providing an accurate measurement of jitter and delay at network level. DF Delay Factor How much time is required to drain the virtual buffer at the concrete network node and at a specific time. MLR Media Loss Rate Number of media packets lost over a certain time interval.

EIT - Event Information Table - contains the details of specific TV programs, in cluding the program name, start time, duration, genre and possibly age rating. The EITs are used by the middleware of the set top box to create an on -screen Electronic Program Guide. TDT Time & Date Table This table provides updated time and date information (changes and correction). RST Running Status Table - The RST is an SI table (DVB) and contains status information about the individual broadcasts.
