FAN MAJOR MODULE

Functional Description (4.D.d)

The fan is a single stage fan rotor cantilever-mounted at
the forward end by a shaft held by 2 bearings. The axial
type booster (low pressure compressor) contains 4
stages cantilever-mounted to the aft side of the fan rotor.
The fan frame is the main forward structural component
of the engine and supports the fan and booster rotor
through the No. 1 and No. 2 bearings, and the high
pressure compressor (HPC) forward section through the
No. 3 (ball and roller) bearing assembly. The fan frame
supports the TGB while the fan case supports the AGB.
The IGB and No. 3 (ball and roller) bearing assembly
supports the HPC rotor forward section and gives power
transmission from the core engine to the accessory drive
section.

Purpose (3.B.a)
The gearbox assembly is the mechanical coupling
between the high pressure compressor (HPC) rotor and
the transfer gearbox (TGB). The No. 3 ball bearing
positions the core rotor axially and the No. 3 roller

bearing assembly located in the high pressure turbine
(HPT) aft shaft and retained by the low pressure turbine
(LPT) front shaft.

The core major module consists of the following eight

modules:
- High pressure compressor (HPC) rotor.
- Front stator.
- Rear stator.

CORE MAJOR MODULE

Functional Description (4.D.d)

The high pressure compressor (HPC) rotor is an axial
flow, 9-stage, unitized, spool-disk structure. The
compressor front stator forms the structural connection
between the fan frame and the combustion case. The
compressor rear stator is mounted inside the aft end of
the front stator. The combustion chamber is an annular
design and is of an integral ring construction. The
combustion case forms the structural connection
between the compressor front stator and the low
pressure turbine (LPT) stator. The high pressure turbine
(HPT) nozzles are mounted in the combustion case and
direct the gas flow from the combustion chamber onto
the HPT rotor blades. The HPT rotor is a single stage,
air cooled, high efficiency turbine. The HPT shroud and
stage 1 LPT nozzle assembly is located inside the aft
end of the combustion case and forms the interface
between the core engine and the LPT module of the
engine.

The combination of HPC rotor and the HPT rotor is

called the high pressure rotor. The high pressure rotor
must be axially locked to the combustion casing to
accomplish the removal of the core major module.
Special tooling is designed to provide the axial locking
requirement.

LOW PRESSURE TURBINE (LPT) MAJOR MODULE

Functional Description (4.D.d)

The rear section of the low pressure turbine (LPT) is
supported by the No. 5 oil dampened bearing installed in
the turbine frame. The fan and booster and the LPT
rotors are connected through the fan shaft and LPT
shaft. The coupling nut of these two shafts is inside the
fan shaft. The LPT shaft has the No. 4 intershaft
bearing, which supports the rear section of the HPT
rotor. The turbine frame has airfoil shaped struts angled
to the inner hub to relieve thermal and mechanical
stress.

FLAME ARRESTOR AND FLANGE ASSEMBLY

Identification (4.A.d)
The flame arrestor consists of honeycomb structure
within a housing mounted to the flange assembly at the
center vent tube exit port. The flange assembly bolts to
the rear frame and supports the flame arrestor. An oil
drainage port is located at the 6 o'clock position of the
flange.

Purpose (4.B.d)
The flame arrestor honeycomb structure changes the oil
vapor carried with the vent air back to a liquid thereby
reducing the potential for combustion. The flange
assembly acts as the cover for the rear inner flange of
the low pressure turbine frame.

OIL INLET COVER

Identification (4.A.d)
The oil inlet cover consists of a housing, the oil supply
tube for No. 4 and No. 5 bearings, an oil supply
dampener tube for the No. 5 bearing, pressurization
tubing and the stationary air/oil seals for the aft sump.
The cover mounts to the rear face of the No. 5 bearing
support which is part of the turbine frame.

Purpose (4.B.d)
The oil inlet cover provides the formation of the engine's
aft sump and pressurization of the dual air/oil seal
installed at the rear end of the center vent tube. The oil
inlet cover also supports the rear vent tube.

AFT AIR/OIL SEPARATOR

Identification (4.A.d)
The aft air/oil separator is of a two piece design. It
consists of the air/oil separator and an air/oil separator
cover. The assembly is retained to the center vent tube
extension duct with a nut.

Purpose (4.B.d)
The aft air/oil separator separates the oil from the air
within the aft sump and allows the air to vent overboard
through the center vent tube.

Functional Description (4.D.d)

The aft air/oil separator nut uses special tooling to
remove the separator from the engine. Once the
separator is removed axial retention tooling can be
installed for removal of the low pressure turbine major
module.

LPT SHAFT PLUG

Identification (4.A.d)
The low pressure turbine (LPT) shaft plug is placed in the
front of the LPT shaft. It consists of the plug with two o-rings
and an anti-rotation tab. A retaining ring holds the
plug in place.

Purpose (4.B.d)
The LPT shaft plug prevents the flow of sump vent air
from escaping forward through the spinner cones. The
shaft plug tab is an anti-rotation device for the nut that
attaches the LPT shaft to the fan shaft.

Functional Description (4.D.d)

After removal of the LPT shaft plug special tooling is
attached to the LPT shaft and the fan disk to push the
LPT major module aft for removal.

DIMENSIONAL DATA

Identification (4.A.d)
The dimensional data required for reassembly of the
CFM56-7 major modules is as follows:
- LV = Constant

- VC = Fan Major Module

- YA = Core Major Module

- ZF = LPT Major Module

- X = LV + VC + YA

- D48 = X - ZF

Purpose (4.B.d)
These dimensions are provided so that the calculation of
the D48 shim can be performed. The properly sized D48
shim insures that rotor to stator spacing is correct within
the low pressure turbine major module after assembly to
the core major module.

DIMENSIONAL DATA

Identification (4.A.d)
Additional dimensional data required for reassembly of
the CFM56-7 major modules is as follows:
- ZK = End of LPT shaft to D48 seating shoulder.

- ZJ = Thickness of LPT coupling nut.

- ZL = (ZJ + VD + D48) - ZK

Purpose (4.B.d)
These dimensions are provided so that the calculated ZL
dimension can be performed. Calculated ZL is
compared with actual ZL to insure that the LPT shaft is
properly seated and secured within the fan shaft.
