16 Popular Online Car Classifieds in Indonesia

Indonesians are transforming the way they shop online. Ecommerce giants such as Tokopedia,
BukaLapak, Lazada & MatahariMall have begun to dominate Indonesians’ searches for new products,
as Internet penetration rates in the country have grown from x% to y% within the last two years
alone. Online forums and classifieds including Kaskus, OLX & Jualo are thriving in this new highly-
mobile Internet environment, as Indonesian consumers are leaving behind shopping malls and
turning instead to their phones, tablets and computers to find the hottest new products.

With this rapidly growing online presence within Indonesia, consumers are beginning to gain more
trust with researching and buying larger ticket items, such as electronics, furniture and even
motorbikes. With such online consumer confidence on the rise, the next market we can expect to
see solid consolidation in over the next few years is Indonesia’s online car portals space.

As Indonesian car buyers are looking to turn from traditional physical car classifieds to their online
counterparts, naturally a lot of competition has arisen. This article will cover all of the major players
in the space currently vying to become the No. 1 Automotive Portal within Indonesia, and to capture
the hearts of the car buyers of the country.

The list includes a look at the monthly visitors of each site, any past investment into the company (if
any) and the current number of listings on each site.

Take a look, compare and make up your own mind about which will become the dominant player in
the battle of the Indonesian online automotive portals.
Mobil123

Mobil123 is the oldest and largest online car classifieds site in Indonesia, both by number of car
listings and number of users. It is backed by a number of investors, including Australia’s dominant
portal, CarSales.com.au, and owned by iCar Asia, the largest network of automotive portals
throughout the ASEAN region.

SimilarWeb rank: #457 in Indonesia with 590,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

Carmudi
Carmudi was founded less than two years ago, in early 2014, but they have wasted no time in
making their presence felt in Indonesia. Founded by Rocket Internet, one of the most aggressively
expanding companies in the World, they specialize in taking an idea that works and rolling it out to
different countries.

Carmudi also have several other car portals in the ASEAN region and are considered the greatest
rival to Mobil123 in most of the markets they share, including Indonesia.

SimilarWeb rank: #1,197 in Indonesia with 210,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

MobilWOW
MobilWow is an up-and-coming classifieds site that has taken a different strategy to the other major
players. Instead of targeting the huge and easily accessible used car market, they have first set their
sights on the untapped new car market.

Traditionally car buyers would not think that there is much room to move on the price of a new car
in Indonesia, but MobilWow is set to prove that this is not the case. With daily deals between car
showrooms varying dramatically, finding discounts on the price of a new car online is very possible.

MobilWow have also recently announced a “high six-figure” series A investment round from early
backers of Tokopedia. What differentiates this portal, aside from being locally owned, is that they
are boot-strapped until now and focus heavily on organic search traffic, as opposed to paid
advertising. Will this be enough to beat the other top players?

Car listings: 3,000

SimilarWeb rank: #4,970 in Indonesia with 55,000 desktop visits in October, 2015 (note: MobilWow
claim that the site has been receiving more than 1 million monthly visits

Otosia
Otosia focuses on everything car-related. Originating from one of Indonesia’s largest online media
websites, Otosia gradually evolved into one of the dominant automotive news and reporting sites on
the web.

The traffic received from readers and followers of Otosia has allowed their car buying and selling
section to grow to one of the largest directories in Indonesia. While it lacks the sophistication of the
other top automotive portals, there’s no questioning that the listings and user volumes alone make
Otosia a serious player in the space.

Car listings: 91,000

SimilarWeb rank: #503 in Indonesia with 650,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

RajaMobil

RajaMobil is another portal that has been around for several years, but one with a slightly different

MobilBekas is another of the oldest and largest online car marketplaces in Indonesia. Formed in
2009, the site quickly began to deliver on its name, becoming the largest provider of used car listings
in the country, incorporating ads from both private users and car showrooms.

Over the years MobilBekas has become eclipsed by its original rival, Mobil123, as well as many of the
heavily backed newcomers entering the market. Their growth has slowed significantly over the last 2
years, and only time will tell if they can return as a serious competitor in this market.

Car listings: 22,000

SimilarWeb rank: #2,833 in Indonesia with 95,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

Mobiloka
Mobiloka is another up-and-coming car portal established in early 2014. While most other car buying
and selling platforms advertise their huge number of listings or competitive car prices, Mobiloka
takes a different marketing approach, aiming to be recognised as the safest and most trusted option
for buying a car in Indonesia.

Car listings: 39,000

SimilarWeb rank: #18,462 in Indonesia with 10,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

Mobilindo
Mobilindo is one of the more basic online car classifieds in Indonesia, but still possesses a surprising
number of listings for users to search through. The site has been around for a few years now, but like
WarungMobil, Mobilindo haven’t added anything to the UX of the site aside from basic searching
and filtering features.

Car listings: 32,000

SimilarWeb rank: #19,855 in Indonesia with 10,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

CarBay

CarBay is an initiative of India’s GirnarSoft, owners of Indian online car classifieds site CarDekho.
They started in the space by providing detailed advice for any car buyers looking to do research or
compare models and prices before buying. It now looks like they’re ready to move from merely a
research tool to directly competing for Indonesia’s leading online car classifieds title, with thousands
of listings (albeit without pictures) now appearing on the site.

from Surabaya, Jogjakarta and Jakarta. Being less than a year old, MobilLobi still have a lot of work to
do if they want to catch up with the major players, but their team is working hard to improve
features within the site and gather feedback from their users on a daily basis.

PasarOtomotif

PasarOtomotif is an automotive portal run by automotive enthusiasts since 2013. Their strategy is to
create an online platform to promote the Indonesian automotive industry and help businesses
within it interact in a mutually beneficial way, by incorporating car repair shops, rental car services
and spare parts dealers.

Car listings: 3,500

SimilarWeb rank: #153,931 in Indonesia

OLX Indonesia
OLX is an online classifieds website that sells anything and everything; including second-hand cars.
Although they aren’t purely an online car buying and selling platform, they are still a formidable
force in this space purely due to their brand recognition and massive user base. Consumers who
have used OLX for the last few years to buy gadgets, shoes and accessories will inevitably also look
to them when researching a car to buy.

This huge user base is actually a double-edged sword for OLX, as they have an equally massive
supply and demand. Their users can submit car listings at any time they want (and as often as they
want), resulting in OLX receiving one new car listing every 12 seconds. The upside to this massive
number of listings is that users can be assured there are a large number of new and relevant car ads.
The downside to this tidal wave of user-submitted listings is that the quality of ads isn’t as high as
other marketplaces, such as Mobil123 or Carmudi, who focus more on user experience. This focus is
the main advantage of car-specific online classifieds over general classifieds sites such as OLX.

OLX contains the second-largest number of car listings in the country, but this number includes many
duplicate ads and already sold cars which haven’t been removed from the system.

Car listings: 300,000

SimilarWeb rank: #28 in Indonesia with 13,600,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

Kaskus
Kaskus quickly grew from being Indonesia’s No. 1 online forum to one of Indonesia’s largest and
most recognised eCommerce platforms. While the major items listed and sold by Kaskus users are
smaller ticket items such as cameras, phones and fashion items, there is an extensive collection of
car listings available to view as well. With such a large online community within Kaskus, thousands of
interactions between car buyers and sellers occur daily within the site. Kaskus possesses the largest
number of car listings in Indonesia, with more than double the listings of Mobil123, but like OLX
many of these listings are likely to be duplicate or outdated ads.

Car listings: 427,000

SimilarWeb rank: #23 in Indonesia with 16,300,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

Jualo
Jualo is another large eCommerce platform which features items in numerous categories. Cars are a
larger ticket item for the marketplace, but clearly sell quite well from within the site with thousands
of new ads being listed on Jualo each week. Jualo also has a larger proportion of new cars than most
other classifieds sites, with close to a 50/50 split between new and used car listings.

Car listings: 18,000

SimilarWeb rank: #894 in Indonesia with 2,200,000 desktop visits in October, 2015

Ikamart
Ikamart is smaller than the previous eCommerce giants, but also includes the option of listing cars as
one of their features. Although not as popular as OLX, Kaskus or Jualo, the number of car ads on the
site is formidable, demonstrating that it presents yet another popular marketing platform for
Indonesian car sellers to advertise on.

Car listings: 34,000

SimilarWeb rank: #11,026 in Indonesia with 30,000 desktop visits in October, 2015
This concludes our list of the 16 most popular platforms for buying and selling cars within Indonesia.
There are some clear favorites in the space, with Mobil123 and Carmudi leading the pack of
Indonesian car classifieds websites, and OLX and Kaskus charging ahead of the multi-category online
classifieds.

The quoted figures for car listings are derived from the sites themselves, and for most likely include
many outdated data which is no longer relevant. If any of the visitor data provided by SimilarWeb
