Calculate Your Electricity Consumption and Answer The Questions

This document contains the responses to questions about calculating electricity consumption and ecological footprint. It includes details from electricity bills from June 2019 and January 2021, such as the total bill, kilowatt hours used, and cost per kilowatt hour. The responses suggest opportunities for energy efficiency and conservation around the home. One response recommends buying an energy efficient air conditioner for long term savings. Reasons for differences in electricity bills between months are also provided. Suggestions are given for reducing ecological footprint without compromising lifestyle, such as using renewable energy and protecting natural ecosystems.

Question 1: How much did you pay for electricity for that month (Include both including and
excluding vat)? (This may be listed as “Total bill.” Total Dues (Rounded)” is the amount
without VAT. Check to see if your bill includes other utilities, such as gas, or if your bill
covers more than 1 month.)
Answer:
SL/Months June, 2019 January, 2021
Total Bill 1,115.00 BDT 2,543.00 BDT
Total Dues (Rounded) 1,061.00 BDT 2,421.00 BDT

Question 2: How many kilowatt hours of electricity did your household use in that month?
(This may be listed as “meter usage,” “recorded demand,” “kWh consumed,” or “electricity
usage.”)
Answer:
Months June. 2019 January, 2021
KWH Consumed 178 387

Question 3: What is the cost you pay per kilowatt hour? (You have to divide the “Total Energy
Charge” by “KWH Consumed”. “Demand Charge” is the charge that is a set fee paid monthly
or seasonally – most customers pay for the energy they use)
Answer: We know that,
𝑇𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝐸𝑛𝑒𝑟𝑔𝑦 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒
Cost of Per Kilowatt Hour = 𝐾𝑊𝐻 𝐶𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑑

Months June, 2019 January, 2021

Cost of Per Kilowatt Hour 4.8390 5.6352

Question 4: Can you tell from the bill if any or all of your electricity comes from renewable
energy sources? (You may pay extra to ensure a portion of your electricity come from renewable
resources.)
Answer: Approximately 60% of our total electricity comes from renewable resources.
Question 5: Energy efficiency refers to completing a task using less energy input than usual.
For example, an LED light bulb produces the same amount of light as other bulbs, but with less
energy. Where do you see opportunities to become more energy efficient at your home (mention
any two techniques)?
Answer: Opportunities to become more energy efficient at my home are given below:
1) Changing the behavior of day to day usage of electricity.
2) Reducing the usage of room heater in the winter season.
Question 6: Energy conservation refers to behaviors and actions that people can do to save or
use less energy. For example, turning off the lights when you leave a room is an action you can
take that reduces the amount of electricity you use. Write down any two actions you can take
to reduce the amount of energy you use?
Answer: The two actions, I can take to reduce the amount of energy I use, are given below:
1) I will turn off fan and air conditioner when I will leave room.
2) I will switch off refrigerator and water filter of my house when I will go for outside.
Question 7: Soha is in the market for a new Air Conditioner! One Air Conditioner she likes is
energy efficient, but a bit more expensive and another one is cheap but consumes more energy.
According to you which one she should buy and why?
Answer: According to me, Soha should buy the energy efficient air conditioner which is a bit
more expensive. Because she will be able to save energy. Thus, her electricity bill will be
comparatively lower. In the long run, it will save her energy and money both.
Question 8: The sample bill in slide 8 is for the month of February and the sample bill in slide
9 is for the month of September for the same household. According to you what can be the
possible reasons for such a difference in the bills for these two months?
Answer: According to me, the possible reasons for such a difference in the bills for these two
months are the highest amount of “Normal KWH Charge”. In my house, we always used to run
two led televisions, two refrigerators at a time and an air conditioner (almost half of a day) in
that month.
Take the screen shot of your ecological footprint results
Write down any three suggestions to reduce your ecological footprints without
compromising your lifestyle.
Answer:

Three suggestions to reduce our ecological footprint without compromising our lifestyle are:
1) Renewable energy is a direct path to reducing your Ecological Footprint and addressing
climate change.
2) Diet and cutting food waste are powerful sustainability levers.
3) Protecting and regenerating the natural ecosystems that our wellbeing depends on is
essential to living in balance with the Earth.

Why do you think the ecological footprint for the people in Bangladesh is so small? Why
is it so large for people living in the United States?
Answer: Because Bangladeshi people have less impact on the environment. On the other hand,
US people have comparatively more impact on the environment than Bangladeshi people.
