MTH 501-Assignment # 1 Spring 2022: Name: Ayesha Noor ID: BC210202124

This document contains the solution to a mathematics assignment with two questions. Question 1 verifies a theorem about invertible matrices by using the matrix A = [[1, 0, 1], [2, 1, 1], [3, 1, 1]] for n = 2. The solution shows that (A2)-1 = A-2 = (A-1)2, proving the theorem. Question 2 determines that the set of vectors {{1, 1, -1, -2}, {0, 2, -2, -2}, {-1, 3, 0, 7}, {0, 4, 1, 11}} is linearly independent because it contains more vectors than entries in each vector, none are a multiple

MTH 501- Assignment # 1

Spring 2022
Name: Ayesha Noor ID: BC210202124

1. Theorem: If A is an invertible and n is a non-negative integer, then:

−1 n
A Is invertible and( A n) = A−n=( A−1 ) .
n

[ ]
1 0 1
Verify the theorem using A= 2 1 1 for n=2.
3 1 1

Solution:
(A2)-1 = A-2 = (A-1)2

[ ]
1 0 1
A= 2 1 1
3 1 1

AI =

= R2 – 2R1 and R3 – 2R1

= R3-R2

= (-1) R3
= R2+R3 and R1 – R3

A-1 =

For n = 2

A-1 =

A-2 = (A-1)2 =

(A-1)2 =

(A-1)2 =
Now

A2 =
=

A2 =

For Inverse

(A2)-1 =

(A2)-1 = R3-R2

(A2)-1 = interchanging rows

= R2-4R1 and R3-7R1

(A2)-1 = R3-2R2
(A2)-1 = R2+2R3 and R1-R3

(A2)-1 =

Hence Proved that (A2)-1 = A2 = (A-1)2.

Question: 2 Marks: 10

1. Determine whether the following set of vectors is linearly independent or linearly

dependent. If the set is linearly dependent, express one vector in the set as a linear
combination of the others.

{[ ] [ ] [ ] [ ]}
1 1 −1 −2
0 , 2 , −2 , −2
−1 3 0 7
0 4 1 11

Solution:
Set of Vectors is linearly independent because of following three
reasons:
i. If a set contains more vectors then there are entries in each vector, then
the set is linearly dependent. That is any set of {v1,v2,v3……..v}
ii. Neither of the vectors is a multiple of the other and hence they are
linearly independent.
iii. Since there is no zero Vector in the set the set is linearly independent.
