LESSON: Factors, Multiples, and Patterns

This lesson covers factors, multiples, and patterns. Students will gain familiarity with factors and multiples, which are numbers that can be multiplied to equal another number. They will also analyze numeric patterns involving factors and multiples, such as listing all multiples of a given number. Key concepts are defined, including common factors, common multiples, even and odd numbers. Examples and short exercises are provided to illustrate these concepts.

LESSON: Factors, Multiples, and Patterns

In this topic students will:

 gain familiarity with factors and multiples

 generate and analyze patterns

Vocabulary:

Factor – a number used to multiply (ex. 3 & 4)

Common Factor – a factor used by 2 or more numbers

(ex. 4 is a common factor for 12 & 24)

Multiple – the product of two numbers is a multiple of each

number (ex. 12 is a multiple of 3; 12 is also a multiple of 4)

Common Multiple – a multiple of 2 or more numbers

(ex. 12 & 24 are a common multiple of 4)

FACTORS
 A factor of a number is an exact divisor of that number i.e.
 The factor leaves remainder 0 when it divides the number.
 A number that can be multiplied.
Example: 2 x 2 = 4
3x3=9
4 x 4 = 16

4 and 5 are factors of 20. We can also say that 20 is multiple of 4 and 5.

What does find the FACTOR means?

- It means all the number you can multiply together to get that number as the product.

*Every number that is greater to 1 has a number 1 and itself as a factor.

Example: You are task to get the number that can be multiplied to get an answer of 27.
*Always start from the least to greatest factor.

*Same number can also be factor.

EXAMPLE:

16 = 1,2,4, 8,16

1 X 16 = 16

2 X 8 = 16

4 X 4 = 16
FACTORS OF SOME NUMBERS

27: 1, 3, 9, 27

1 X 27 = 27

3 X 9 = 27

8 = 1,2,4,8

1X8=8

2X4=8

25 = 1,5,25

1 x 25 = 25

5 x 5 = 25

PROPERTIES OF FACTORS

1. 1 is factor of every number. It is also the smallest factor of a number.

Ex. 1 is a factor of 1, 2, 3, …… and so on.

2. Every number other than 1 has atleast 2 factors, 1 and the number itself.
Ex. 2 has 2 factors, 1 and 2, whereas 6 has 4 factors, 1, 2 , 3, and 6.

3. The factor of a number is less than or equal to the number.

4. A number is its own largest factor.

Ex. 15 is the largest factor of 15.
5. A number has limited number of factors.
Ex. 6 has 4 factors, 1, 2, 3, and 6. It has no more factors.

SHORT EXERCISES:

1. Which number is a factor of 36?

a. 8

b. 6

c. 15

d. 13

2. Which number is a factor of 25?

a. 5

b. 2

c. 3

d. 7

3. Which number is a factor of 14?

a. 3

b. 2

c. 5

d. 6

ANSWER KEY:

1. 6
2. 5
3. 2

MULTIPLE
 A number is said to be a multiple of any of its factors.
 A multiple of a number is the product of the given number and some other counting numbers.
 4 and 5 are factors of 20. We can also say that 20 is multiple of 4 and 5.
EXAMPLE: List the multiple of 2

2x1=2

2x2=4

2x3=6

2x4=8

2 x 5 = 10

2 x 6 = 12

2 x 7 = 14

2 x 8 = 16

2 x 9 = 18

2 x 10 = 20

*All the product of 2 are multiple such as the 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20.

PROPERTIES OF MULTIPLE

1. Every number is multiple of 1.

Ex. 5 x 1 = 5
6x1=6
2. Every number is a multiple of itself
3. Every multiple of a counting number is either greater than or equal to the number.
Ex. The first multiples of 4 are 4, 8, 12, 16.
The first multiples of 5 are 5, 10, 15, 20.
4. The first and smallest multiple of the number is the number itself.
5. There are infinite multiples of a number. So, the largest multiple of a number cannot be
determined.

SHORT EXERCISES:

1. Which of the following is the multiple of 7?

a. 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, ………
b. 7, 12, 17, 22, 30, …….
2. What is the multiple of 3?
a. 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, ……..
b. 3, 6, 9, 12, …..

3. What is the multiple of 5?

a. 5, 7, 10, 15, …..
b. 5, 10, 15, 20, ……

EVEN NUMBERS
 A number which is an multiple of 2 is an even number.
 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 are some examples of the even number.
 Even numbers are always end in one of the digits of 0, 2, 4, 6, 8.

*Note: even numbers are exactly divisible by 2.

ODD NUMBERS

 number which is not divisible by 2 is odd number.

 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 are example of odd numbers.
 Odd number always end in one of the digits of 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.

COMMON MULTIPLE

 The number that is common among multiples of 2 or more numbers called common multiples.
Example: Common multiples of 6 and 8
Multiples of 6 : 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, ….
Multiples of 8: 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56,…….
The common multiples of 6 and 8 are: 24, 48
