Training PPT Earth Work

Earthwork involves excavation, removal, and compaction of earth and soil. The document discusses earthwork scope, methods, and quality control process for an embankment filling project. Materials will be obtained from approved borrow areas and tested to ensure soil properties meet specifications. Layers of fill will be spread and compacted in lifts of 250mm using rollers until the desired density is achieved, with sampling every 3000 square meters to verify compaction. Drainage will also be installed to reduce water infiltration.

Methods
1. Survey and Setting out Works :
• After site clearance, all the demarcations will be set out for Centre line , alignment line ,row
line
2. Clearing and Grubbing
• Cutting, removing and disposing all materials such as trees , bushes ,stumps, roots, unstable
rock ,organic soil which are not suitable for embankment
• After clearing and grubbing, the surface to be inspected by GC Engineer, if required
samples from ground level can be kept for any future test
3. OGL Level Inspection
• After clearing and grubbing, the surface to be inspected by GC Engineer
• Samples from ground level can be kept for any future test
• Level for the profile to be taken by surveyor and GC Engineer jointly
4. Laying of Material
• The limits of embankment may be marked by fixing batter pegs or lime spread lines on both
sides as regular intervals as guides before commencing the earthwork.
• The fill material will be delivered to site by tippers / dumpers from approved borrow area
• Initially pockets of undulations if any shall be filled in layer of 250 mm and will be compacted.
• Then materials shall be spread above the profile layer, in a layer of uniform thickness not
exceeding 250 mm compacted thickness over the entire width.
Methods
4. Laying of Material
• If any bolder more than 75 mm size, roots etc found shall be removed.
• Material shall be spread uniformly with the help of motor grader.
• Moisture to be maintained for Compaction should be with +1% to -2% of OMC.
• If material is too wet , it shall be dried by aeration and exposure to sunlight till the moisture is content is
acceptable for compaction to sunlight and dry before compaction

• If material is dry water shall be sprinkled from water tanker to apply uniformly with a controllable flow
rate.

• The graded material shall be thoroughly compacted to the specified densities by a

vibratory roller having a static weight of 8-10 tons with plain drum .
o The number of heavy vibratory passes shall be established after doing trial stretch to achieve required
density . Generally 5 passes required.

o Speed of the roller shall be maintained uniformly (not exceeding 5KM/Hr.) during rolling.
Methods
4. Laying of Material
• After compaction , level to checked and recorded
• Density shall be checked for evaluation of compaction results. Requirement as
follows
• Field Density > 95% x Material Dry Density

• Minimum 10 Samples to be taken for 3000 Sq.mt area across the profile.
• All testing and records shall be maintain as per specification and as per ITP.
• If the desired compaction achieved , next layer shall be fill and test as per
above same work sequence and test frequency.
5. Drainage arrangement
• Suitable drainage arrangements shall be provided to the Embankment to
reduce the infiltration of water
• Aggregate Type B (Size 40 mm -20 mm) can be used
