Week 2 - Activity 2

The document provides instructions for a mathematics activity involving rational functions. Students are asked to solve word problems, determine whether given expressions are rational functions, equations or inequalities, solve rational equations and inequalities, and analyze intercepts and asymptotes of a rational function. The activity is from a General Mathematics class in the Schools Division of Surigao del Sur in the Philippines and instructs students to show their work and write answers on clean sheets of paper.

WEEK 2 – ACTIVITY 2

RATIONAL FUNCTIONS

I. Directions: Solve the following work problem. Show your solution. No Solution, NO POINTS.

1. How long would it take for both pipes to fill the swimming pool together, if a white pipe
would take 9 hours to fill a large swimming pool full of water and a blue pipe 12 hours
to fill the same swimming pool full of water?
2. It takes Jack 5 hours and Joan 10 hours to paint a shed. How long will it take them to
finish the job if they work together?
3. Maybell can do a job in 4 days and her assistant, Nigel can do the same job in 16
days. How long will it take for Nigel and Maybell to complete the job, if they work
together?

II. Directions: Begin at the “Start!” and determine whether the given is a rational function, a
rational equation, a rational inequality, or none of these. Encircle your answer and use your
answer to move to the next square. Continue until you get to the “Finished!” square.
