Describe the Impact of Massive Open On-line
“Education is moving towards global openness and accessibility [1] facilitated by
new learning environments and tools based on technologies that have become key
drivers in educational innovation [2]. This is the general setting where MOOCs (Massive
Open Online Courses), the recent breakthrough in the field of education, are flourishing.”
as cited by Sergio Martin and Manuel Castro (2013). Empowering communities online: A
massive Open Online Community on App Development and Entrepreneurship. Accessed
@ academia.edu on August 18, 2020. Retrieved from academia.edu.
According to researchers, even though the ideas behind the idea can be traced
rather earlier, the term was coined in 2008 in the context of e-learning by Stephen Downes
and George Siemens, when they were defining their course on Connectivism and
Connective Knowledge - CCK08 [3]. Despite their short story, MOOCs are conceptualized
as the evolution of networked learning and indeed it has become the educational
buzzword of 2012 [4], as some of the most prestigious US Universities have
enthusiastically embraced and developed the concept. In fact, early examples prompted
by the best American Universities, such as EdX (Harvard, MIT and Berkeley to name a
few) and Coursera (Princeton, Stanford and Brown amongst others), have attracted
hundreds of thousands of participants who contribute to both the materials and
organization of the course.
The article discusses that such phenomenon, which has been likened by the
president of Stanford University to “a digital tsunami” [5], seems to sweep aside
conventional university education.
Whether or not the rise of MOOCs will prove to warrant such attention, there is no
doubt that something very important is taking place in the educational system, raising
profound issues regarding its main components, such as the role played by
teacher/student, evaluation and certification, the distributive and interactive character of
learning, its inclusive role given its open and free nature and so on. A recent step forward

1
is related to the focus on the credentialing system, as the American Council of Education
has recently endorsed five MOOCs for credit [6].
The article describes the unX Entrepreneurship Community has been launched to
provide a rapid and innovative response to the new needs in higher education and
certification of skills and knowledge in a more accessible, open and adaptable fashion to
meet new professional requirements.
The paper explains that one of the most exciting MOOCs located in this platform
is the project described here. Under the title “Empowering communities online: A massive
Open Online Community on App Development and Entrepreneurship”, the project
belongs to the Wireless Reach™ initiative developed by Qualcomm.
This article describes the main foundations of this project, which is aimed at
fostering Spanish entrepreneurial community by mobile app development. In doing so,
the article is organized under five main headings. And the section describes the main
features of unX, which provides the platform where the MOOCs run, as well as some
preliminary results and achievements reached so far. The third section focuses on
describing the main objectives of the project, whereas the fourth section explains its main
features in terms of dynamics, contents, evaluation system, etc. The article finishes with
some brief conclusions and highlighting areas of future improvement.
According to Margaret Rouse on her article published at
www.whatis.techtarget.com stated that a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is a free
Web-based distance learning program that is designed for the participation of large
numbers of geographically dispersed students.
A MOOC may be patterned on a college or university course or may be less
structured. Although MOOCs don't always offer academic credits, they provide education
that may enable certification, employment or further studies.
The word MOOC was coined in 2008 by Dave Cormier, from the University of
Prince Edward Island for a course offered by the University of Manitoba, "Connectivism
and Connective Knowledge." There were 25 tuition-paying students from university and
2,300 non-paying students from the general public who took the course online. There
were RSS feeds for material and participation was facilitated through a variety of venues
including Moodle (a learning management system), blog posts, Second Life and real-time
online meetings.
In 2011, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) OpenCourseWare
(OCW) became the first large collections of MOOC resources made available by a
university. In 2012, MIT and Harvard spearheaded the edX initiative for the promotion of
MOOCs.
The website https://www.mooc.org/ describes Massive Open Online Courses
(MOOCs) are free online courses available for anyone to enroll. MOOCs provide an
affordable and flexible way to learn new skills, advance your career and deliver quality
educational experiences at scale.
According to the developer of the website, millions of people around the world use
MOOCs to learn for a variety of reasons, including: career development, changing
careers, college preparations, supplemental learning, lifelong learning, corporate
eLearning & training, and more.
