HISTORY OF COFFEE

According to legend that a goat herder in 6th century Ethiopia named Kaldi seen his
goats dancing after they have eaten a cherry from a wild shrub. Amazed what he saw, he also
ate the cherry and thus the Legend of Kaldi and the dancing goat began not to mention it also
the legend of how Kaldi discovered coffee.
Kaldi and the Dancing Goat
The following highlights the journey of coffee from Ethiopia to
its status today:

Coffee as;

 Second most traded commodity after oil.


 Most traded food commodity.
 Second most consumed beverage next to water.

 10th Century – coffee considered as a food. Ethiopian tribesman mixed with


wild berries with animal fat, roll them into balls and ate them during their
journeys.
 YEMEN – First country to cultivate coffee.
 TURKEY – First roasted coffee.
 13TH CENTURY – in the Islamic world coffee was considered as potent medicine. It
was also used as religious potion that helped the faithful awake during lengthy prayers.
 BRAZIL – Biggest PRODUCER of coffee. Where in the early 18th century the
messenger befriend the French governor’s wife and smuggled coffee beans inside the
bouquet of flowers.
 USA/AMERICA – Biggest CONSUMER of coffee. Where in 1774 the famous Boston
Tea Party the American settlers threw the crates of tea in the river and every American
who drinks tea will be branded as pro – English rule
 PHILIPPINES1 – There are two versions of how coffee came in the Philippines.
