Worksheet -2 Subject: - Computer Class: - VI Teacher: - Mrs. Suudha Sharma

Name: ______________ Class & Sec: ________ Roll No. ______ Date: 18.04.2020
Lesson 1: Computer Story
Classification of computer on the basis of their size and speed.
Microcomputer
Microcomputers are small computers whose CPU is a microprocessor, contained on single
IC. These computers are also called Personal Computers (PCs). The major types of these are
Desktop, Laptop and hand held (Tablet PCs, Smart phones) computers.
Workstation
A workstation is like a personal computer, but it has a more powerful microprocessor and a
high quality monitor.
Minicomputer
These computers are very powerful and available at a reasonable price as compared to
mainframe computers, so users in 1960s switched over them. Minicomputers are referred
to as mid-range servers now because PCs have overpowered the digital market.
Mainframe Computers
These are huge computers that can occupy an entire
room or even a whole floor. It can also accommodate
many users at a time. Terminals are used to connect
a user to this computer. A terminal is a device which
has a keyboard and a screen integrated together.
These computers are normally referred to as
enterprise servers.
Supercomputers
These are the most powerful computers as it uses multiple CPUs to work on a problem using
the concept of Parallel Processing. Parallel Processing
is the simultaneous use of more than one CPU to
execute a program. These computers are used for
highly calculation intensive tasks such as weather
forecasting, climate research and physical
simulations.
