"Rational or Irrational?": Mathematics

Here are the rational/irrational classifications for Kim's duck numbers with explanations: 1. Pekin Duck - Rational (√6561 is 81, a perfect square) 2. Itik/Native ducks - Irrational (51.565252... is a non-terminating decimal) 3. Indian Runner - Irrational (√101 is not a rational number) 4. Philippine Mallard - Irrational (√400 is not a rational number) 5. Muscovy duck/pato - Irrational (∛28 is not a rational number) 6. Commercial Hybrid duck - Rational (12.3 is a terminating decimal) 7. Khaki Campbell duck - Rational (35 is an integer)

EPS I, MATHEMATICS
Describes principal roots and tells
whether they are rational or
irrational.
SUBTOPICS:
Identify real numbers as
rational or irrational numbers
Determine whether radical
numbers are rational or
irrational
Solve problems involving
rational or irrational numbers

This material was designed especially to help you

develop your skill in DESCRIBES PRINCIPAL ROOTS AND TELLS
WHETHER THEY ARE RATIONAL OR IRRATIONAL.
As you work on the exercises, you will be able to learn
how to describe principal roots and tell whether they are
rational or irrational, thereby improving your skill using different
techniques in dealing with this topic.

Ms. Noemi, your MATH TOUR GUIDE, is here to help you

with this adventure.
Integers such as 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 and 36 are called
PERFECT SQUARES. RATIONAL NUMBERS such as
𝟗 What is an
0.16, 𝟏𝟎𝟎, and 4.84 are also, perfect squares.
Irrational
Perfect squares are numbers that have rational Number?
numbers as square roots. The square roots of
perfect squares are rational numbers while the
square roots of numbers that are not perfect
squares are IRRATIONAL NUMBERS.

What is an "Irrational" means "no ratio", so it isn't a rational

Irrational number. π (the famous number "pi") is an
Number? irrational number, as it cannot be made by
dividing two integers.

Examples of
Irrational
Number
Fun Facts ....
Apparently Hippasus (one of Pythagoras' students) discovered
irrational numbers when trying to write the square root of 2 as a
fraction (using geometry, it is thought). Instead, he proved the
square root of 2 could not be written as a fraction, so it is irrational.
But followers of Pythagoras could not accept the existence of
irrational numbers, and it is said that Hippasus was drowned at sea
as a punishment from the gods!
