Let us be guided first, on how we are going to
accomplish today’s lesson. First, define historical
and reader-response approaches and then express
understanding on historical and reader response
approaches. And lastly, Critique a literary selection
based on historical and reader-response approaches.
As part of your homework last meeting, I’ve made
you do a critique of a movie using the Marxist and
feminist approach, now kindly pass your paper.

Before we start our discussion, you will be doing an participate in the
activity titled “Remember me?” in this activity all activity’)
you need to do is to identify the literary work or
movie you’ve seen. If you have any idea or know
the correct answer just raise your hand and tell us
what literary work or movie that is.

(Present the activity)

I hope you are fond of watching this kind of films

because they’re not only for entertainment, but this
actually will teach us about our history.

So how is this related to our lesson for today? So, as

I said we will be talking about historical approach
and reader response.

B. DISCUSSION
PROPER
PRESENTATION At our last meeting, we walked through marxist and
feminist approaches in critiquing a literary selection.
Let’s do a quick recap about our lesson. Who can
still remember of?
Feminism
What is Feminist approach about? advocates gender
equality towards
women which also
examines how some
aspects of our
culture are
inherently
patriarchal or male
dominated.

The Marxist
Great memory! What about the Marxist approach? Approach is mostly
based on Karl
Marx, and is
generally referring
to the race, power,
culture, and class of
the author’s work.
(Student answer
may vary.)
As part of your homework last meeting, can you
share your insights to the movie you watch and
relate it in the feminist and Marxist approach?

DISCUSSION When we say History, what comes to your mind? The study of past
events, particularly
in human affairs.
Correct! History is the study of our past events. In
relation of our topic for today it has something to do
with the history. First let’s discuss the Historical
Approach. Do you know what is historical A literary criticism

work was written,

happening during the text was written.

So, in here critics or readers may understand all the

events and forces that might affect the author when
he or she is composing the story using historical
approach. It helps the reader or critic to understand
the piece deeply and comprehensively.

Are you familiar with El Filibusterismo and Noli me

Tangere of our very own National Hero Dr. Jose
Rizal?
Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo have
similarities in terms of aims and purpose.

What are those? Fight for the

freedom of our
country and
embrace our
culture, Ma’am.

Very good. The Noli me Tangere novel purpose? It is not an attack of

Spanish colonialism
instead it is a call
for Filipino to gain
their self-
confidence,
embrace their self-
worth, value their
own heritage of
their ancestor and
assert their equality
to the Spaniards

Exactly, While in the El Filibusterismo? Aims to enlighten

the Filipino people
and let them
discover the truth.
In this novel, it
encourages the
society to open
their eyes and start
a rebel against the
Spanish
government for its
tyranny and
mistreatment.

Very well said. These two novels were written when

Philippines is under the colonization of the
Spaniards. For 333 years of colonization under the
Spanish government, the writer used his talent in
writing to portray the real situation of the Filipinos
under the Spanish colonization.

The writer on these novels which Dr. Rizal

witnessed and experienced these brutal and
inhumane treatment. His experienced was his
inspiration to write the novels for his advocacy to
wake up his fellow Filipinos

This are the few questions in Historical approach.

 how does the work reflect the time? when it
was written?
 does the story show or contradict prevailing
values of the period number?
 what historical influences helped shape the
form and content of the story

Now let’s move on to the next approach. What

about Readers- response? Do you know what it is? Reader response
literature may be
judged according to
how the reader
perceives it instead
of what the author
intends the text

themselves. Even if all our evidence for a certain
interpretation comes from the work itself, the
readers, who do the interpreting, assigning meaning

The reader creates the meaning analysis of the

reader's role in the production of meaning makes
someone's reading a function of personal identity it
recognizes that different people view works
differently and that people's interpretations change
over time.

What does that mean?

The role of the reader is to read the text of the

literary piece and interpret in his/her own
understanding no matter what approach he/she will
use. For reader-response, you may critique a literary
piece using your own understanding and
interpretation.

We have two types of reading: the aesthetic which

means to read for pleasure, emotional focus in
literature and efferent which means to read for
information, book history text.

Which one do you prefer? The aesthetic? Or I prefer the

aesthetic rather than afferent. I encourage you to
read aesthetically rather afferently because this will
give you a lot of learnings to grasp especially in
based on your own understanding.

This are the few questions in Reader-response

approach.
 how does the author provide information or
details to make the story seem realistic?
 what real life people or events are you
reminded of by the characters or events in
the story? explain.
 why do you think the author wrote this story
from your analysis?

for both literary criticism?

ANALYSIS Alright, let me ask you a few questions.

What is Historical approach in criticism? Historical criticism

involves beyond the
literature at the
wider historical and
cultural events
happening during
the text was written

What about the Reader-response approach in reader response

criticism? literature may be
judged according to
how the reader
perceives it instead
of what the author
intends the text
itself has no
meaning until it is
read by a reader.
Can you differentiate the two approaches we
discussed? Historical sees
literature as both a
reflection and a
product of the times
and circumstances
in which it is
written. while
Reader-response is
centered on readers’
reactions to

literature.
GENERALIZATIO Historical criticism involves beyond the literature at
N the wider historical and cultural events happening
during the text was written, historical sees literature
as both a reflection and a product of the times and
circumstances in which it is written. while Reader-
response is centered on readers’ reactions to
literature, it may be judged according to how the
reader perceives it instead of what the author intends
the text itself has no meaning until a reader reads it.
