TUTORIAL CHAPTER 24 : QUANTUM PHYSICS

1 State 4 important observation from the photoelectric effect’s experiment.

2 State 2 differences between explanation given by wave theory and quantum theory.

3 The variation of photoelectric current I with potential difference V across a photocell is shown in
the graph below

Calculate the maximum speed of the photoelectrons

emitted.

4 In a photoelectric effect experiment, monochromatic light of wavelength 400 nm is irradiated on a

metal surface to produce photoelectrons. If the stopping potential is 1.20 V, determine the threshold
wavelength of the metal.

5 a. Explain de Broglie hypothesis.

i. Calculate the ratio of the kinetic energy of electron and the kinetic energy of proton if
both of them have the same de Broglie wavelength.
ii. If the proton has de Broglie wavelength of 6.0 x 10-13 m, calculate the potential needed to
accelerate it from rest to achieve this wavelength.

6 a. Describe how an emission spectrum is produced.

b. The diagram shows the energy levels of a mercury atom.

i. What does the zero level signify?

ii. If the –10.4 eV level is the highest level with an electron present, what is the ionisation
energy of the mercury?
iii. What transition takes place when a photon of wavelength 141 nm is emitted?

7 a. An electron is accelerated from rest through a potential difference of 2000 V. Determine its
de Broglie wavelength.
b. An electron and a photon has the same wavelength of 0.21 nm. Calculate the momentum
and energy (in eV) of the electron and the photon.
(Given c =3.00 x 108 m s-1, h =6.63 x 10-34 J s, me=9.11 x 10 -31 kg and e=1.60 x 10-19 C)

8 The diagram below shows some energy levels in a certain atom.

a. What is the maximum number of spectral lines that can possibly be produced by this atom?
b. Draw arrows to indicate the electronic transitions corresponding to the spectral lines in (a).
c. Calculate the shortest and longest wavelength of the photons emitted by these electronic
transitions.

9 a. Electrons in an X-ray tube are accelerated by a potential difference of 10 kV. What is the
minimum wavelength of the resulting X-rays?

1 a. State two characteristics of X-ray.

0 b. When a monochromatic X-ray beam of wavelength 8.3 x 10-11 m fall on the surface of a
sodium chloride crystal, the first order Bragg diffraction occurs at a glancing angle of 8.5o.
i. Calculate the separation of the atomic plane.
ii. Determine the maximum order of diffraction that can be obtained

around the nucleus of nth orbit that is allowed in a hydrogen atom for state n = 3. The
radius of the third orbit is 4.77 × 10−10 m. [3m]

b) The energy levels of a hydrogen atom at various states is shown in the diagram below.

i. What would happen to the photons of energies 12.0 eV and 10.2 eV when they pass
through a stable atomic hydrogen vapour? [2m]
