SAP S4 HANA LSMW Process

This document discusses the Legacy System Migration Workbench (LSMW) process for migrating data from non-SAP legacy systems to SAP systems. It describes the prerequisites and overview of LSMW, including the different migration methods of direct input and batch recording. It explains the batch recording process in detail and compares it to the direct input method. The document notes that while LSMW can still be used for migrations to SAP S/4HANA, the Legacy Transfer Migration Cockpit (LTMC) is the recommended tool.

Prerequisites

 imagined a company located in Yaoundé in Cameroon this

company for years have been using an ERP (not SAP) to
manage their business processes so for efficiency concerns
the managers of this company decide to implement the
SAP system to effectively manage their business process
while reducing operational costs and now we can’t create
all the old data to SAP manually, because it’s a time
taking process. then to save time, money, and energy SAP
offers the LSMW method for data migration.
What is LSMW

Legacy System Migration Workbench (LSMW) is a tool that

supports the transfer of data from non-SAP systems ("Legacy
Systems") to SAP R/3 systems. This can be a one-time transfer as
well as a periodic one.
Furthermore, the LSM Workbench provides a recording function
that allows generating a "data migration object" to enable
migration from any required transaction.
 The main functions of the LSM Workbench are:
 Import data (legacy data in spreadsheet tables and/or
sequential files)
 Convert data (from source format to target format)
 Import data (into the database of the R/3 application)
What is LSMW
Different Methods of migration used by LSMW

 In LSMW we can use 4 methods for migration :

1. Direct input method
2. Batch Recording
3. BAPI- Business Application programming interface
4. IDOC-Intermediate Document
But in this document we will use only : Direct input method
and Batch Recording because BAPI and IDOC will be used
with the help of ABAPer .
Different Methods of migration used by LSMW
Batch Recording

Batch input is one of the primary ways in which data can be

transferred into the SAP system. Batch input is used for bulk
data transfers and not for near real-time data transfers.
For Batch Input, you need to create the recordings for the
selected TCode and have to map the source fields with the
target fields and finally map the relations.
Many companies will prefer this method to upload the data
from the legacy tool to SAP. Because is more easy than
Direct input method i will show you the main difference.
Batch Recording
follow these steps / Batch Recording
Step 1: Create project ; Subproject ; Objet
Step 2 : Object Attributes
Step 3 Maintain Source Structures
Step 4 :Maintain Source Fields
Step 5: Maintain structure Relations
Step 6 :Maintain Field Mapping and Conversion Rules
Step 7 :Maintain Fixed Values, Translations, User-Defined
Routines

It will be automatically
Step 8 :Specify Files
Step 8 Specify Files
Step 9: Assign Files
Step 10: Read Data
Step 11: Display Read Data
Step 12: Convert Data
Step 13: Display Converted Data
Step 14: Create Batch Input Session
Step 15: Run Batch Input Session
Step 15: Run Batch Input Session

 Go to check list of the vendors tcode : MKVZ

List of vendors
Direct input method

This is the method where we will input all the field names
manually and upload the file to enter the data.
We will prefer the Direct input method for the Material
master.
Many of the companies will prefer Direct input method for
material master, where we have popup or selection of user
departments in MM01, so indirect input method we can
mention the name of the filed by taking from MM50 like
Complimentary status K, E, B(Without Space- if you are
selecting Basic data, purchasing and accounting).
Direct input method
In this method, we are simply selecting the standard program defined by
SAP for different Masters
follow these steps /Direct input method
Difference between Direct input and Batch
recording

➢ As in the direct input method, we are maintaining all the

source fields and length of character manually by the help
of SE11. While in Batch recording we do no need to
update the source fields. The system will record each
filed that we are entering and list out the filed names to
update the same in source fields.
➢ Batch Input could be a slow process.
➢ Direct input is the fastest.
the main difference between these two methods is
in step 6
Maintain Field Mapping and Conversion Rules / Direct
input / Field mapping manually
Maintain Field Mapping and Conversion Rules / Batch
Recording / Auto field mapping
LSMW in S4HANA

The LSMW (Legacy System Migration Workbench) tool is still

available within SAP S/4HANA on-premise but not considered
as the migration tool.
As LSMW uses standard interfaces (BAPIs, iDOCs, Direct Input
and Batch Input programs and recordings), and Data-
structures and screens have drastically changed / new in
S/4HANA, the use of LSMW is restricted for migrations to
SAP S/4HANA
For restrictions on certain Batch Input or Direct Input
programs that are used by LSMW, one needs to check the
application components directly.
Legacy Transfer Migration Cockpit ( LTMC) in S4HANA

In S4HANA The Tool used to perform Migration

is LTMC – (Legacy Transfer Migration Cockpit) You
can access the SAP S/4HANA migration cockpit by
using transaction LTMC.
The SAP S/4HANA Migration Cockpit helps you to
easily migrate data from an SAP or Non-SAP legacy
system to an SAP S/4HANA system
Conclusion

➢ Creating a recovery program requires patience, precision.

➢ The recovery execution mechanism is sequential, which allows
each step to validate the data (source read, conversion,
execution).
➢ In batch-input mode, as in this example, it is possible to
analyze the errors in order to find the source of the problem.
➢ LSMW used in ECC is still active in S4HANA but LTMC is
recommended for S4HANA
