• How’s your composition?

• Did you find it easy making your composition?
• Don’t worry, the preceding activity will help you understand writing a 4-paragraph
composition showing comparison and contrast.

WHAT IS IT
Study the composition in the box below.

Beware Of

We often heard that alligators and crocodiles are dangerous. Did you ever
wonder how are they alike and different from each other? Alligators and
crocodiles have some characteristics that are alike. They are both large and
scary-looking reptiles. They have sharp teeth and scaly skin, too. They also
bury their eggs in sand or mud and are even known to attack humans.
However, the two are also different in some ways. One difference is their
habitat. Alligators prefer to live in freshwater while crocodiles prefer in salty
water. Another one is their snout. Crocodiles
have long and narrow snout than the alligators. Unlike alligators too, the crocodiles
are more aggressive and move fast.
Indeed, these two reptiles look and behave in similar and different ways. This must be
something to be aware of.

• How’s the composition in the box?

• Now, let’s talk about it.

 What is the composition all about?

 In the 1st paragraph, what were the two things being introduced? Does it state
the main idea of the composition?
 What were discussed in the 2nd paragraph? Do you notice some
transitions/signal words? What are they?
 How about in the 3rd paragraph, what were discussed? Can you cite the signal
words or transitions present?
 In the 4th paragraph, how was the composition ended? Does it restate the
introduction?

Thus:

 What is comparison and contrast composition?

It is a composition that tells the comparison (similarities) and contrast (differences) of two
or more (persons, animals, places, things) respectively.

 What should one remember in writing a composition showing comparison and

contrast?

The following tips should be remembered:

a. Choose the people or things (subjects) you want to describe

b. Organize similarities and differences of your two subjects in a Venn
diagram
c. Use the transition/signal words that show- - similarities,
such as like, similarly, and both
- differences, such as but, however, while, and on the other hand
 What outline should be followed?

The outline looks like this:

Title
Introductory Paragraph
(introduces the main idea/what to be talked in the
composition)
Body Paragraph 1
(presents how the things are similar)
Body Paragraph 2
(explains how the things are different)
Concluding Paragraph
(ends up and summarizes/restate the introduction)

I am sure you are now confident to move on the next exercise.

WHAT’S MORE

Below are set of paragraphs written in the boxes. Arrange the boxes in order to come up
with a good composition showing comparison and contrast. (Use the worksheet found on
page 9)

Name Me

On the other hand, the two are also different. Butterflies can be seen during the day
while most moths fly only at night. In addition, butterfly’s body is thinner and smoother
than moth’s body.

Some insects with colorful wings were found resting on a flower. It could be a
butterfly or a moth. Their similarities and differences will surely help us name the
insect.

Naming such insect is now easier knowing how they differ

from each other and alike in some ways.

Butterflies and moths have two things in common. One similarity is their wings which
covered with colorful scales. They also have long and rolled-up tongues to use in
drinking nectar from flowers.

Now, have fun in answering the next activity (Use the worksheet found on page 10)
Activity 1

Directions: Cross out and remove unnecessary sentences to come up with a 4-paragraph
composition showing comparison and contrast. Make a title. Rewrite it in your paper.

Production of agricultural products has been very effective in the country because of its
farmlands. Among such are the rice terraces and plain rice fields. People should do their part
in protecting the environment. These two are alike in a few ways and different in many others.
Rice terraces and plain rice fields are prepared paddy areas for planting rice and other crops.
Both farmlands can be irrigated so that plants may have enough water to thrive. They serve
as shelter for the animals.

However, rice terraces are pieces of sloped planes that have been cut into steps that used to
farm on hilly or mountainous terrain. Some children play under the trees. On the other hand,
plain rice fields are flat and wide surfaces of land usually farmed on valleys and plains.

Though alike and different in some other ways, the most important is the effective production
of raw food for the Filipinos.
