Saint Mary'S College

The document summarizes the calculation of the contingency coefficient between teachers' performance levels and salary ranges using data from a sample of 1,000 teachers. It shows the teachers distributed across four performance levels and four salary ranges in a table. It then shows the step-by-step calculation of the independence values and the r value, which is 0.46, indicating a very high correlation between performance and salary. An activity questions asks to interpret the r value and determine if there is a significant correlation, rejecting the null hypothesis that there is no correlation between performance and salary range.

Table 1 shows the performance level of teachers with corresponding salary. Out of
1000 teachers, 358 scored outstanding, 264 scored very satisfactory, 180 got a rating of
satisfactory, and 198 got poor performance level.

Step A. Get the Independence Values

1. 358X 335 = 120 2..264 X 335 =88 3.180 x 335 = 60 4. 198 X 335 = 66
1000 1000 1000 1000

5. 358 X 284 =102 6.264 x 284 = 75 7, 180 x 284 =51 8. 198 x 284 =56
1000 1000 1000 1000

9. 358 X 137 =49 10. 264 x 137= 36 11. 180 x 137 =25 12. 198 x 137 =27
1000 1000 1000 1000

13. 358 X 244= 87 14. .264 x 244 =64 15.180 xc 244 =44 16. 198 x 244 =48

Step B Calculations for the “r”

1. (194)2 = 313.6 2. ( 83 )2 67.5 3. (25) 2 12.8 4. (56) 2 =36.
120 102 49 48

5.(70)2 =55.7 6. (124)2 = 205 7. (34)2 = 32.1 8. (194)2 =20.3

88 75 36 64

9. (41)2 = 28 10. (41)2 = 33 11. (55)2 = 121 12. (43)2 = 42

60 51 25 44

13. (30)2 = 13.6 14. (36)2 =23.1 15. (23)2 = 19.6 16. (109)2 = 247.5
66 56 27 48

S = 1270.7
N = 1000
S-N = 1270.7- 1000=270.7

“r” is equal to the square root of 270.7 = 0.46

1270.7

ANSWER ON THE
ACTIVITY
How Much have you learned?
1. Please complete the vacant numbers by following the
process presented as reflected in nos. 1 to no. 5. You are
required to solve from NO. 5 TO NUMBER 15.
- Please see the solution and answer above.

2. Give the proper description of your “r” , where “r”

SIGNIFY STATUS OF CORRELATION which is .46
- The computed “r” denotes a descriptive rating of very
high correlation, which means that performance of
3

teachers is very highly correlated with the salary.

3. Based on your answer; “Is there a significant correlation

between performance and range of salary. Use the range of
as basis of your decision for “r”. Present your null
hypothesis. Will you reject and/or accept the Null
hypothesis. Why? Please explain tour answer.
- Null Hypothesis: There is no significant correlation
between the performance rating and the salary range of
teachers.
- Since the computed “r” is .46, the null hypothesis is
rejected.
- Therefore, there is a significant correlation between the
performance rating and the salary range of teachers.
