CHAPTER I

I. INTRODUCTION AND RATIONALE

The existence of COVID-19 pandemic brought extraordinary challenges to the

stakeholders, teachers, parents, and students. Thus, the researchers belived that there is an

effect of teaching – learning process in new normal education to student’s performance most

especially using modular type of learning (Aksan, et. al. 2021). Modular Learning provides

flexibility for accesing learning content for enlightening learning accomplishment (Olasina,

2018). Modular Learning equips students with the choice to learn at their personalized place,

pace and using convenient learning approach. Students in less industrialized nations do not

realize the actual potential of using flexible pedagogical academic tools through modular –

learning (Gordon, 2014). The influence of modular learning on student’s productivity is

likely to increase when flexibility intervenes as mediator (Wen, Brayshaw, et. al, 2012).

Academic performance plays a vital role due to; this is the outcome of student’s effort

in examinations. Students academic performance is determined by a number of factors (Eze

et. al, 2016). Students using the modular learning approach significantly increased the

academic performance of the students. It also exhibited that from the different learning areas

such as Mathematics, Science and English rational improvements in the academic

performance of the students who used the modular learning approach (Betlen, et. al. 2012).

In this context, as per DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones amidst of the COVID-19

crisis, the education must continue with health risks that the pandemic is imposing to
teachers, the department of education provided guidelines and policies regarding various

modalities and approaches in teaching to provide quality education to learners amidst

pandemic. This insures the health safety and wellbeing of the learners and teachers (Agarin,

et. al. 2012). Since the conduct of face-to-face classes is prohibited, the DepEd announced

that the adoption of various learning delivery options such as but not limited to blended

learning, distance learning and home schooling and other modes of delivery shall be

implemented depending on the local COVID risk severity classification and compliance with

minimum health standards (Briones, L., 2020).

In line with above discussion, the key purpose of this research is to find out the effects

of modular distance learning on academic performance of Mabuhay NHS Students S.Y.

2020-2021. Also, this study aims to ascertain the methods, interventions or solutions of every

educational institution as well as the government in helping students, parents and teachers

who are having difficulty in this new learning modalities amidst pandemic (Epra, et. al.

2021). Findings from this study may also add to a body of knowledge to the existing modular

distance learning and academic performances within the educational system and act as a

framework for developing teaching learning preparation in curriculum. Furthermore, this

study addressed to the locale setting particularly in Mabuhay National High School, hence,

this study is limited.

II. LITERATURE REVIEW

This chapter presents a review of related literature and the readings relevant to the

study.

The Education as defined by (Simonson et. al. 2011), remote or distance learning

refers to institution-based, formal learning, where the learner and instructor are physically

separated, and where interactive telecommunications system are used to connectioners,

resources and instructors many universities and colleges worldwide suspended classroom

teaching due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and switched to modular distance learning

and online teaching. Due to the suspension of classroom teaching in many colleges and

universities, as switch to the online teaching for undergraduate and graduate students

becomes effective (Closure, P., 2020). As mentioned by (Keegan., 2013), some early levels

of distance education like correspondence study, home study, independent study, and distance

teaching were indicative of the types of activity going on in the early years.

The Georgia State University School of Public Health, like all other institutions of

higher learning, had to create distance-learning opportunities to enable students to complete

the 2019-2020 academic year (Mensah, et. al., 2020). The modular approach was used

extremely as an alternative traditional education 60’s in the English-speaking countries of

Europe and the United States (Bashmakova, 2014).

The Philippines is currently in the process of adopting to the new normal form of

education, and educators’ continuous innovations, as well as the active participation of other

stakeholders, are the driving forces behind its success (Dangle, Y.R., Sumaoang, J.D. 2020)

Modular distance learning, or real modules delivered to students houses, accounts for 80%,

while online distance learning accounts for 20%. The use of multimedia resources account for

20% of the total, but the only issue is the strength of internet connectivity in rural areas.

(Philippine News Agency, 2020).

SYNTHESIS

The readings aforementioned here has been presented to this study’s variables.

Discussions concentrate the relevance of their study, which help explains the outcomes of this

research. Effects of modular distance learning on academic performance are a means by

which the educational system enhance since academic performance of students are not

affected on the new pedagogical method of today. As a result, students should maintain and

adapt new ways of learning. Moreover, academic performance occurs when students are

ready to adjust and adapt new ways of learning. To sum up, this study implies the effects of

modular distance learning on academic performance of students in a new pedagogical method

in teaching-learning process.
III. RESEARCH QUESTIONS

This study seeks to investigate the effects of “Modular Distance Learning” in the

Academic Performance of Mabuhay NHS Students.

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the academic performance of students in Mabuhay National High School S.Y.

2020-2021 using modular distance learning?

2. Is there a significant difference in the Academic Performance of students using

modular distance learning?

3. What interventions can be proposed to improved the academic performance of

Mabuhay NHS in the new normal?

IV. SCOPE AND LIMITATION

This study will be conducted in Mabuhay National High School, Division of

Agusan del Sur. The respondents of the study are the Junior High School S.Y. 2020-2021.

These students were chosen because they are fit to respond the problem of the said study. The
researchers used random sampling/ complete enumeration where the respondents are

randomized through fish ball/lottery selection utilized as the respondents of the study.
CHAPTER II

I. METHODOLOGY

This chapter is devoted to specify the steps and the methodology taken in carrying

out the research endeavor. The researchers presents research design, study population and

sample, and data collection procedures. Descriptive correlational analysis was used to

achieve the main purpose of the study and to answer the research questions.

Research Design

This study utilized a non-experimental qualitative design. This study used a non-

experimental qualitative design since the researchers wanted to determine the effects of

Modular Distance Learning on Academic Performance in Mabuhay National High School

S.Y. 2020-2021.

Research Locale

This study conducted in Mabuhay National High School situated in P-2 Mabuhay

Prosperidad Agusan del Sur. Mabuhay National High School is a child-friendly environment

promotes love and peace and quality graduates. This school is located in Mabuhay

Prosperidad Agusan del Sur which is declared as drug free brgy, and known for its famous

unending falls or Bega falls all over in Agusan del Sur.

Data Gathering

Before the data collection, the researchers write a letter addressed to the Principal of

the school in Mabuhay National High School. Including is the authorization request, the letter

of approval to the adviser of every grade level and requesting sample population from the

office of faculty and staff was also included in the letter. After the approval to conduct the

study, the researchers will administer the research questionnaires to the respondents and

explain on how to answer, what are the purpose and the importance on having a response to

the survey instruments via online and through the help of the adviser of every grade level.

Researchers will use E-survey to send survey questionnaires through Google forms to the

respondents. The study will be conducted to the respondents of the study, the students of

Mabuhay National High School. After the respondents have finished answering the research

instrument, the researchers will collect the questionnaires and after all data are gathered, it

will be tabulated and subjected to the statistical test and analysis.

Data Analysis

The study will utilize frequency and percentage of the problem of the said research

study, and will be explored through the use of weighted mean and standard deriation.
