Crescent Lighting
This is the first catalogue that we have produced that gathers all our LED ranges together since we produced the first LED pavers in 1998. Since then of course, the LED lighting market has been revolutionised by the development of the power LED such as the Philips Lumileds Luxeon series, and we have sold thousands of products all over the world. We have invested heavily in the development of the products you see in this catalogue, with particular emphasis on thermal performance and lumen output of the luminaires. Thermal integrity is vital to provide the best light output and to maintain the life expectancy of the LED. All our products are designed to comply with the requirements of EN60598-1:2004. This technical expertise is recognised by Philips Lumileds we are a Luxeon approved CERTIFIED Luminaire manufacturer. When you specify a Crescent Lighting product you can be sure that you are working with a company that has sufficient resources to handle any size and complexity of project. There is a lot of confusion about the various advantages and benefits of fibre optic lighting when compared to LED solutions. Crescent have worked with fibre optics for twenty years and LEDs for nearly ten, so we are in the perfect position to advise you on the best solution for your project. We have no axe to grind. We have nearly twelve years of experience with all aspects of this technology so we can help at all stages of a project and provide a complete turnkey service to give customers confidence and a fantastic lighting solution. Advice at the earliest stage of a project can confirm the feasibility of using LED lighting or direct attention to another technique, if appropriate.

We invest a lot of time and effort in demonstrating LED equipment. There is nothing like seeing it in action to prove the effectiveness of the technique. The soft profile of the CLO system allows optical control of the LEDs, giving an asymmetric distribution. This produces a narrow 8 degree transverse beam as shown above. The beam width in the other direction is wide and this combination makes for very effective wall washing and grazing of surfaces with light. There is a feedback circuit in the fitting which tells the driver if the CLO is too hot. The driver will then reduce current to the CLO until it returns to its correct operating temperature.

The CLS profile is small - only 32mm diameter - and can fit into most cornices and architectural niches, or be subtly mounted on a wall or ceiling. They can be resin filled to stop moisture ingress, so can be easily used outdoors to wash light over building exteriors, facades, gardens etc. The unlensed LEDs give a wide distribution allowing the profile to be fitted close to the mounting surface and still giving an even wash.

CLV system is based on one simple extrusion shape with the ability to house lensed or unlensed LEDs. The CLVS unlensed version shown here can be single colour, RGB or RGBA (or RGBW) in four circuit operation. The advantage of four circuit RGBA or RGBW fittings is their ability to mix a wider variety of white shades with the addition of the fourth amber or white circuit. They are available for interior use (IP20) or resin filled for exterior or underwater operation (IP68). The CLVSE product has a wider (55mm) LED spacing making it suitable for single colour operation only, but offering a more economical product with 36 LEDs in a 2 metre length.

A very small linear LED system, which will suit dozens of different applications. The high output of the Luxeon LED sources, together with their small physical size makes them ideal for cornice and other concealed lighting applications. The LEDs are mounted in a line on an aluminium alloy track with nine LED modules per metre. This track is constructed so that it is easily cut to length or formed to a curve on site.

Attaching the spotlights is a simple matter, with a sliding movement the jack clicks into place. The section is very small as the drawing (approx. actual size) below shows. The spotlights are designed for 350mA Luxeon LEDs. The track modules can be joined electrically with a loop connector, so that total length is only dependant on the size of driver and the number of spotlights fitted. Free standing goalpost and vertical mounting attachments are also available.

1. Driver presets This gives the alternatives of red, green or blue, a mixed white or a rolling colour change. The individual drivers (CRE2801) will not be synchronised with each other.

2. Simple wireless DMX control Using the CRE2890 wireless module the system can be programmed via the wall plate or the optional hand held remote device. This ensures the individual drivers remain synchronised with each other.

LED products need accurate and consistent electrical operating levels for optimum light output and lifetime over all anticipated environmental conditions. Crescent have a range of transformers and drivers to suit all expected conditions. High Power LEDs High power LEDs, such as Luxeon and CREE are operated with constant dc current, and are always connected in series. There are a minimum and maximum number of LEDs allowable in a series chain, depending upon the driver selected. Multiple LED products are internally connected in series, ready to connect directly to a suitable driver. Multiple LED products can themselves be connected in series, taking account of the total number of LEDs in the series chain. Power LEDs run at two current levels i.e. 350mA and 700mA depending upon required performance and environmental operating conditions. LEDs can be dimmed. Dimming drivers use one of three techniques i.e. Potentiometer, 0-10Vdc analogue signal or DMX digital control. Weatherproof (IP rated) drivers are available for exterior or wet locations.

Crescent Modules (Low power LEDs) Non dimmable. Lower power LED products are connected in parallel. They use a constant voltage supply of 24Vac (or dc). To establish suitable supply (transformer), simply add the individual VA ratings of the products in a circuit, and choose the next highest transformer VA rating.

Cables Ancillary Items Part Numbering System

Cabling for LED Supply requirements High power LED products require specific cable sizes depending upon the total distance between the supply driver and the products within the series chain. Voltage drop along the length of the cable must be kept to within the driver capability LED products are fitted as standard with a preset length of sheathed stranded cable 7 x 0.2mm dia (0.22 sq mm) Longer lengths of cable can be fitted simply by use of terminal blocks for basic use, or using connectors for ease of maintenance or servicing. Above certain cable lengths, 16 x 0.2mm (0.5 sq mm) cable is required (see table below) For internal use, we use Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 series connectors to extend cables. Some products come with an 8 way receptacle fitted. A special crimp tool is required to fit cables to these connectors. For External use, we suggest Bulgin Buccaneer IP68 rated connectors. Micro, Mini or Maxi Buccaneer are needed, depending upon cable size and number of cores, (RGB products for example have 8 cores, most others have 2). Mini and Maxi connectors are available with screw terminals, Micro connectors need crimping. We recommend sheathed 8 way (if Thermal Life Saver circuit is used), 6 way (if not) or 2 way multi-core cable to Defstan (61.12 pt 4 and 5) Standard.

Modifications to products and specials

We believe we have one of the widest ranges of LED products on the market, but we understand that sometimes there is a project requirement that cannot be fulfilled by a standard item. Crescent are happy to consider requests for modifications and special products, although whether we can economically produce them will depend on the complexity and the quantity involved.

These images of Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol demonstrate what can be done. The standard CLF2749 spotlight design was almost completely changed to fit the requirements of the bridge and the lighting design concept by Pinniger and Partners. We also worked closely with the consulting engineers, Silcock Dawson and the Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust. The detail image on the right shows the fitting mounted on the bridge structure, so that the beam grazes along the suspension chain.

The section shows the structure of the device. The plastic lens contain no epoxy, which improves the lumen maintenance of this unit, when compared to conventional 5mm LEDs. The Luxeon K2 is an LED with superior thermal management characteristics, enabling a higher lumen output to be achieved from a luminaire without sacrificing the rated life of the LED.

Crescent Module Luxeon 1 350mA

The table above shows the output of the LEDs used in Crescent products as given by the LED manufacturers. It should be noted that lumen output figures shown are based on the industry norm flash test, measured at 25oC. These outputs will not be obtained from LEDs operated within enclosed luminaires and which are running continuously. They are shown here as a comparative indication of performance. Consult the Project Design Department for details of individual luminaire outputs. We have photometric test results for most of the product range. Binning Binning and labelling is the process of separating LEDs based on their various characteristics and assigning them a specific bin code. LEDs with the same characteristics, and therefore code, are kept together. The human eye cannot generally detect a colour difference from LEDs within a single bin. The CIE chromaticity diagram shown on the right, shows the colour tint of white light in degrees Kelvin (K). The other diagram shows the Luxeon binning structure through the white colour range. LEDs are also binned for differing Lumen outputs, which is why there is a range of outputs for some of the LEDs in the output table above.

LED Technical Dialux

The output of LEDs is increasing all the time, as a result of the huge investment in product development made by the LED manufacturers. The graph shown below gives an indication of how the manufacturers see the performance increasing over the next few years. It should be noted once again that these are free air flash test output and not necessarily what will be produced from a luminaire.

All of our photometric information is derived from tests conducted by Dial GmbH, Europes leading photometric testing laboratory and lighting software company. Their programme Dialux has been at the forefront of lighting design since 1994. Following extensive testing, Crescent is one of the first companies to have its LED data fully available on the Dialux programme. We are members of the Dialux partner network. It is now easy to integrate LED lighting with other lighting, and then to visualise the results on the screen, print them or export them to other programmes. The images opposite show renderings prepared for a project, making use of the wide range of furniture that can be placed inside the space. The latest version of Dialux allows you to walk through the area and see the effects from all angles. Dialux is available for downloading from the Dial web site at www.dial.de
