The line graph illustrates the consumption of three different spreads (margarine, butter, and low
fat & reduced spreads) in a 26-year period in England. It is measured in grams. Overall, butter and
margarine showed a decrease of consumption during this period while low fat and reduced spreads
had an increase since its introduction in 1996.
Between 1981 and 1986, margarine and butter showed contrasting trends with an increase from
140 grams to 160 for butter while a decrease from 90 grams to 80 for margarine. In the next 5
years, butter had a significant fall reaching 100 grams in 1991 while margarine had an increase of
consumption to the same number. In the following 5 years, butter continued its decreasing trend
with only 70 grams of consumption in 1996. On the other hand, margarine maintained its number
during the five-year period. In the last 11 years, both butter and margarine continued its
decreasing trend reaching a low of 50 grams and 40 grams respectively. During the same period,
low fat and reduced spreads was introduced and gained popularity from its introduction having a
significant increase from only 20 grams in 1996 to 70 grams in 2007. (196 words) – min 150 words –
