Biology 1305-02
Spring 2017

Instructor: Daniel R. Samples, M.D., Ph.D.

Office: BSB A.218 Phone: 710-2749 email: [email protected]

Class Time: 8:00-9:15 Tuesday and Thursday in BSB D.109

Office Hours: please see Office Hours on page 4 of this syllabus.

SI Leader (Bio 1305-02): Scott Lee email: [email protected]

Course Description: Biology 1305 is an introduction to some of the basic principles of biology. It is
one of two semesters of introductory biology and is designed for students who plan to major in biology
or a related science. This course also satisfies one of the required semesters of Biology for most
health professional school admissions. Topics to be covered this semester include a basic chemistry
review, an introduction to basic biochemistry, cell structure and metabolism, Mendelian and molecular
genetics, gene regulation, viruses, and biotechnology.

Course Objectives: In many introductory courses in the natural sciences, you are asked to assimilate
a lot of facts. This course, Biology 1305, is no exception. However, my goal is to help you learn how to
apply that information and develop your critical thinking skills. An additional goal is to prepare you for
more advanced studies in the biological sciences.

REQUIRED ITEMS: Campbell Biology by Reece Edition: 10th U.S. edition.

NOTES AND POWERPOINTS:

My notes for each lecture topic will be posted to Canvas/Modules/Unit#/Notes# prior to the scheduled
lecture. You should bring a copy of these to lecture. I will post my PowerPoints to
Canvas/Modules/Unit#/Powerpoints# within a day after the completion of a topic. Topic Reviews will be
included with each Unit. I will go over in class how best to use these as a guide to your studies and for
exam preparation.

CLASS PREPARATION:
You should preview the Notes from Canvas and read any referenced sections in your textbook prior to
lecture. Looking over the Topic Review before the lecture is also helpful.

LECTURE EXAMS:
Dates for exams and topics covered are noted on the Lecture and Exam Schedule. The lecture
examinations and the final exam will cover the information from lecture/Powerpoints and my Notes from
Canvas. The only item you will need to bring on exam days is a #2 or HB pencil. You may go over a
previous exam during any of my office hours and prior to the next scheduled exam (i.e. if you want to
go over Exam #1, do so prior to taking Exam #2).

MISSED EXAMS
If you are absent on one of the four exam days, your grade on the final exam grade will also be your
grade for the missed exam. I do not give make-up or early exams. This policy, as with other policies
stated in this syllabus, applies to everyone in the class.

FINAL EXAM:
The date and time for the cumulative final exam is shown on the Class Schedule. Dates and times for
all final exams can be found on the BU website (see URL below). If you have 3 final exams scheduled
for the same day, you may request that one of your exams be given on a different day. Request forms
are available at the Office of the Dean, College of Arts and Sciences.

Final Exam Schedules: http://www.baylor.edu/registrar/index.php?id=84416

CANVAS ASSIGNMENTS:
The Canvas Assignments can be accessed through Canvas/Bio 1305-02/Assignments. Due dates and
times (all due by 11:59pm on the due date) can be viewed on Canvas and are also listed in the right
column of the Lecture and Exam Schedule. These assignments will be of variable length and the time
allowed for completion will also vary. The assignments are provided to help reinforce your study of the
material and to give you an understanding of how I expect you to know that material. You may use any
resources available to you as you work through these.

The questions will cover current and previously covered topics within a unit. As we move further into
the course, you will encounter individual questions that require you to draw on information and concepts
covered in two or more areas of the course.

Late assignments receive a score of zero. The due dates/times for all assignments are provided at the
beginning of the semester, so there will be no time extensions or make-ups offered. Each quiz is
available for completion days ahead of the due date. At the end of the semester, the two lowest
assignment grades are dropped before calculating the final Canvas Assignment average. Assignments
within a Unit will be available to view and work on the exam date for that Unit. If you complete the
assignment after the deadline, you will see a score. Just be aware that the score for that late work will
revert to zero (0) at the end of the Unit.

SUPPLEMENTAL INSTRUCTION (SI):

SI is a program administered by the Baylor office of Academic Support Programs. You will be contacted
by the course SI leader regarding meeting location and times. You are encouraged to attend these
sessions.

EMAILS:
The second best way for us to communicate outside of class. I respond to all of your emails. Likewise,
you should read all emails from me.

ATTENDANCE:
Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes. The College of Arts & Sciences requires
attendance at least 75% of the class meetings (22 of 29). More than 7 absences from this class will
result in automatic failure.

LATE ARRIVALS AND EARLY EXITS (Please Read and Understand This Section):

In a class of over 100 students, some may arrive late or have to leave early for any
number of reasons. If you arrive late, please enter class through the back entrance
to room D.109. If you are late and enter through the front door, you have interrupted me
and distracted the other students. I will pause the class proceedings until you are seated.
If you need to briefly leave the room or leave for the remainder of class, please exit
through the back door.

If you arrive late on an exam day, enter through the back door of D.109. To help
minimize the distraction for those who arrived on-time, please not come to the front of the
room to pick up an exam. Wait in the aisle and we will bring you an exam.

CLICKERS (TurningTechnologies Response Device):

The QT2 clicker is required for this class. Cell phones will not function as response devices in this class.
TurningTechnologies LCD and QT clickers will also work for this class. Clicker responses will be used
by me to monitor and evaluate your grasp of specific concepts during class. To encourage participation,
students who respond to at least 90% of the clicker questions during the semester will have 1.0
percentage point added to their final numerical grade. A response, right or wrong, is counted toward
this additional credit. Beginning on the second day of class (Thur, Jan 12), ‘clicker’ questions will be
asked during each class period. Clicker responses also expedite the role-taking process. If you are
present, but do not have your clicker on a particular day, please sign the sheet available at the front of
the class room. Obtaining a clicker and license, registering the clicker for this course on Canvas,
having it with you during class, and ensuring that it is functional are your responsibilities. No
clicker response = no credit.

You must create a TurningPoint account, register your device, and enter a license code before I will
know that a particular clicker belongs to you. If you already own a clicker, but do not have a license,
you will need to purchase one. You can purchase a license on-line via the link provided in the above
Canvas Module.

Even if you used a clicker last semester, you still need to register it for this class. Baylor IT has
produced 3 videos that can step you through the clicker set-up process The 3 videos can be accessed
from Canvas:

OFFICE HOURS:
An appointment during my office hours can be scheduled using the CANVAS scheduling feature. A
tutorial is posted on Canvas covering how to use this system. My generic weekly schedule is also
posted on Canvas under Modules/Syllabus and Schedules/ Office Schedule. I strongly encourage you
to schedule an appointment to see me during office hours if you have any questions about the material,
ways to study for Bio 1305, or to review your last exam.

You share the Office Hours scheduling calendar with my other class. A second calendar titled Bio 1305
Pre-Exam will appear the week before each exam and will show appointment slots for Friday of that
week. These are for you.

In a class size of greater than one, each lecture is, by default, “one size fits all”. In reality, just like the
medium-size shirt, it is not. Each of you begins this course with a unique level of preparation,
motivation, and expectation. If something seems unclear to you, I urge you to visit with me for a
tailored explanation.

GRADES ON CANVAS:
Your course grade to date is shown under “Total”. Prior to the final exam, the Total is calculated from
your Exam scores and Canvas Quiz average. I will add in any Clicker points after I grade the final exam.

GRADE: Final course grades for Bio 1305-02 are determined as follows:

Lecture Exams 72% (4 exam scores @ 18% each)

Canvas Assignments 10%
Final Exam 18%
90 - 100 = A
88 – 89.9 = B+
80 – 87.9 = B
78 - 79.9 = C+
70 – 77.9 = C
60 -69.9 = D
< 60 = F

Extra Credit: The only potential additional credit is earned via Clicker responses (see CLICKERS
section). No additional credit is offered. Please don’t ask.
