As a Child, I lit candles to do assignments I had brought home from school. I remember those nights
because my parents could not, at that time, afford to buy the only alternative means of power supply
which was petrol-fouled generators. Many years later and not much has changed. I was also very
concerned about the high tailpipe emissions from the exhaust system of the old aged vehicles in my
country. Global warming is having a very negative impact on our country Ethiopia. Interest being an
engineer and environmental enthusiast, I always desired to contribute to the field of renewable energy. so,
after I finish my preparatory school I decided to study Engineering.
Since I enrolled in my master’s study, in addition to coursework, under the supervision of professor Chul-
Ho Kim, I have worked on projects titled “A Streamlined design of a high-speed Bus for fuel-saving and
Reduction of Carbon dioxide” Where the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method was incorporated
to analyze the variation of aerodynamic effects on the model buses with the change of body configuration
and I have worked on the title “The 2D back-facing step problem in PHOENICS CFD software’’ the
computational domain modeling, parameters, and menu setting, data acquisition from spreadsheet and
interpretation techniques are clearly described and applied. The final data are plotted using MATLAB and
compared with the experimental data. As a researcher in Teramaj Ethiopian Science Army, I have
designed a high-performance rocket engine using hydrogen peroxide and kerosene as fuel which obeys
the green space propulsion policy and presented it at Metals and Engineering Corporation (METEC),
Ethiopia. As a lecturer at Mekelle University and Hawassa University, I have worked on a Project titled
“Design of Solar Powered Grain Mill Machine” which has a high production capacity of up to 400 kg per
hour. I am also working on a project titled “Reactive Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) in Diesel
Engine using Alternative Fuel” an experimental investigation will be conducted to explore the operability
region, characterize the performance and emissions, and optimize the key operating parameters of RCCI
operation using alternative fuel as the primary fuel and will be presented for international conferences. As
Team supervisor and consultant at K and E Electromechanical work contract partnership, we have worked
in the installations and maintenances of solar systems at different sites in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
Speaking about the details of my master’s thesis, I have worked under the supervision of Dr. Ramish
Babu (Associate Professor) which is titled “Design of Macpherson struts suspension system for lighter
vehicle”. I was able to improve the suspension system of the Bajaj Qute in order to have correct camber
curve and steering stability and it’s published at Springer professional. My future research interest lies in
further investigation of the relation of the factors such as Renewable Energy, solar system,s and
Alternative energy with environment and emission.
I do not believe that it is enough to just talk the talk; it is important to walk the walk as well. This was
why I went the extra mile to take an online course on renewable energy offered by Micro-grid academy,
after my Graduate years at Adama Science and Technology University. The African continent has an
abundance of renewable energy sources and most are left unutilized. I intend to take advantage of this
great abundance by securing a professional career in energy system technology. My exposure to the
online course program by the Micro-grid academy will open my mind to see that it is possible to generate
cheap and clean power from renewable energy sources while also contributing to the reduction of
emission of carbon into the atmosphere, which in turn leads to a reduction in greenhouse-gas-emissions.
The World Bank Group estimates there are still about 537 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa and most
remote areas, globally, who still do not have access to electricity. I am passionate about contributing to
putting an end to this huge problem. It has been my lifelong dream since I was a child and opportunities
that I have lost because of lack of access to constant electricity.
Micro-Grid Academy provides an excellent opportunity for me to gain knowledge further and experience,
and to improve my professional skills in the field of Renewable Energy Technologies. Past my MSc.
degree I am planning my career as a researcher in the energy sector and establishing an Electro-
mechanical work contract partnership.
Finally, I believe that life is a constant learning process and I am confident that I have the Knowledge,
Experience, and qualifications that meet the requirements for the 24th MGA online Training focus on
Decentralized Renewable Energy - Site Selection and Engineering. I am certain that my passion,
ambition, and willingness to work hard will help me to become a successful engineer.
Yours sincerely,
