Method Statement

6.2.5 The formwork shall be made wet just before the commencement of
concreting and it shall be ensured that water is not pooling inside the
formwork area and all the reinforcement and embedded items are
adequately secured to prevent any movement during the concrete
placement.

6.2.6 On completion of inspection and subsequent approval by the Owner /

Engineer, concreting shall be carried with the specified grade of concrete
as indicated in the drawings / specification.

6.2.7 Concrete shall be obtained only from the approved ready mix concrete
supplier and on receipt of concrete at site, it shall be discharged from the
transit mixer as rapidly as possible to its final position by approved
means. The concrete shall be placed and compacted within 90 minutes of
the water being added to the mix. Appropriate tools like concrete chute,
spout, skips and pumps shall be used for concrete placing.

6.2.8 Before placing the concrete, in-situ tests such as slump test and
temperature of concrete and ambient temperature shall be checked and
recorded for every concrete transit mixer. It shall be ensured that the
temperature of concrete does not exceed 30°C at the time of placing
concrete. Slump shall be above 175 mm for piling concrete and for all
other concrete generally not to exceed 100 mm to ensure proper
workability.

6.2.9 Samples on each day of concreting at the point of placement shall be

taken. One set of six (6) test cubes for every 100m³ or every daily pour of
concrete shall be taken for each grade of concrete for conducting
compressive strength tests. Bimonthly or for every 750 m³ of concrete
cast, 12 test cubes shall be taken for conducting the durability tests. (1 no.
for rapid test for chlorides, 1 no. for rapid test for sulphates, 3 nos for
water absorption test, 3 nos for water penetration test and 4 nos. for rapid
chloride permeability test.)

6.2.10 Concrete cubes casted at the point of placement shall be removed from
mould after 24 hrs and shifted to independent testing laboratory as soon
as possible. In case of any delay in shifting to laboratory, they shall be
stored in curing tank which is maintained at room temperature.

6.2.11 Concrete shall be placed in horizontal layers of not more than 300 mm
thickness each and shall not be allowed to fall freely over 2 m height. The
rate of delivery of concrete during concreting operations shall be such that
the intervals between the batches shall be minimized to avoid cold joints.
The concrete shall be compacted with sufficient mechanical vibrators to
get a compacted and dense concrete.

6.2.12 Top of concrete cast level shall be marked on the column reinforcement
bars / parapet reinforcement bars and the concrete shall be leveled to
match the levels marked. Concrete shall be leveled and finished as per
the levels indicated in the approved drawings and the fresh concrete shall

be covered immediately after pouring with a polythene sheet to avoid the

loss of moisture.

6.2.13 In case of concreting in hot weather, the hot weather concreting

recommendations shall be followed to lower the temperature of concrete
such as:

6.2.13.1 Cooling coarse aggregate with water by sprinkling and shading

6.2.13.2 Using chilled water

6.2.13.3 Using crushed ice

6.2.13.4 Avoiding the use of hot cement

6.2.13.5 Shading mixer drums, facilities and material by use of

permanent wet burlap coverings

6.2.13.6 Adequately watering of sub grade, form work and

reinforcement

6.2.13.7 Insulating water supply lines and tanks and or painting

exposed portions white

6.2.13.8 Working only at cooler daytime

6.2.13.9 Covering freshly poured concrete with polythene sheets

6.2.13.10 Intensive moist curing with potable water of the concrete

placed

6.2.14 If any construction / expansion joint are to be introduced, concreting shall

be carried out continuously up to the construction / expansion joints.

6.2.15 In case of horizontal / vertical joints, any excess water and laitance shall
be removed (chipped) from the surface before the concrete hardens in
order to make a suitable bond between the fresh and old one.

6.2.16 Once the concrete has stiffened, polythene sheet shall be replaced with
wet hessian cloth and water cured for the minimum of 7 days.

6.2.17 On completion of all concreting activities, the surplus materials and waste
materials shall be disposed at designated location.

6.2.18 Removal of formwork shall be as approved by TRANSCO at site, and

shall be effected in such a manner that no damage is caused to the fresh
concrete. The minimum duration for removal of form work shall be as
follows:
