ARTICLES (Артикли: a, an, the)


Артикли (a, an и the) употребляются в предложении перед
существительным или именным словосочетанием. Их использование связано
с разделением существительных на исчисляемые и неисчисляемые.

1. Неопределенные артикли (a и an) употребляются перед


единственным числом существительных, когда мы впервые говорим о
данном предмете.
артикль a ставится перед существительными, которые начинаются
с согласной буквы,
пример: a book, a unit, a cat;
артикль an ставится перед существительными, которые начинаются
с гласной буквы,
пример: an orange, an apple, an hour.

2. Определенные артикли (the) ставятся перед существительными


единственного или множественного числа и неисчисляемыми
существительными, когда:
говорим об известном, конкретном, определенном предмете, когда
понятно, о каком предмете идет речь,
пример: Excuse me, where’s the station?
при повторном упоминании предмета
пример: I have a house in Spain. The house is very big and has a
beautiful garden. The garden is behind the house.
указывают на единственный в своем роде предмет в конкретном
контексте
пример: Students, look at the blackboard.

Определенные артикли употребляются перед:


географическими названиями рек, морей, океанов, гор и пустыней
пример: the Red Sea, the Alps, the Sahara desert;
множественным числом фамилий,
пример: the Smiths, the Browns;
названиями кораблей и гостиниц,
пример: the Titanic, the Ritz;
названиями газет,
пример: the Guardian, the Times.

3. Артикли НЕ употребляются перед:


существительными во множественом числе,
пример: Ø Children start school in September.
неисчисляемыми существительными,
пример: She likes Ø music.
именами собственными, пример: My name’s Ø Jason.
