SAN MATIAS PARISH CHURCH

YEAR: 1751
BUILT BY: DOMINICANS
HISTORY: Commonly known
as Tumauini Church, is a Roman
Catholic church in the municipality
of Tumauini, Isabela, Philippines within
the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Ilagan. The first church made
of nipa and other light materials was
built by the Dominican priest Francisco Nuñez in 1707, and dedicated to Saint
Matthias. Tumauini became an independent parish from Cabagan in 1751, it became a
separate parish independent from Cabagan under the advocacy of Saint Matthias in 1751.
The church, known for its brick Baroque-style architecture, was declared a National Cultural
Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines. Together with the churches
of Boljoon, Guiuan, Loboc and Lazi, the Tumauini Church has been considered for
the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List since 2006 under the collective group
of Baroque Churches of the Philippines.

SAN JOSE DE IVANA CHURCH

YEAR: 1787

BUILT BY: DOMINICANS

HISTORY: The church of Ivana was

first established by the Dominicans as
a chapel in 1787. Originally, there were
three mission chapels in Said, Kadpidan
and Radiwan in Ivana. The present stone
church and convent was built in
Radiwan under the direction of Father Francisco de Paula Esteban, OP, in 1795, while
the bell tower was constructed during the term of Father Fausto de Cuevas, OP from 1814 to
1817. The church was intended to serve the people of Ivana, Sabtang and Uyugan. The
residents of Sabtang had been forcibly resettled in Ivana, but were later allowed to return to
their island, reducing the size of the congregation. In 1844, space in the church's nave that
was no longer needed was closed off. The façade was renovated during the term of Father
Fabian Martin, OP, from 1866 to 1869. The church was partially destroyed due to an
earthquake in 2000 and was later renovated during the term of Father Gumersindo
Hernandez, OP, in 2001.
Filipino revolutionaries waved the Katipunan flag in the church's bell tower on September
18, 1898.

OUR LADY OF ATOCHA

YEAR: 1820

BUILT BY: DOMINICANS

HISTORY: The architecture of the
Our Lady of Atocha Church is said to
be an example of the ‘Cagayan Style’
of Spanish Churches. It makes me
curious and would want to explore
more churches in this region. Looking
at the church’s exterior is just
enthralling. It stands stern and firm. The interior on the other hand is clean in design and the altar is very
simple. It works very well as a fitting contrast. It strikes a balance between an ornate exterior and a
subdued interior. The Our Lady of Atocha Church in Isabela is indeed a solemn place of worship and
quite a beauty to behold.
It turns out that the Our Lady of Atocha Church is a remarkable historical landmark in Isabela. The
Department of Tourism has declared it a National Religious Tourist Destination in the Philippines. Built
in the 1820’s, the church was completed and inaugurated in 1849. It was dedicated to the Nuestra Senora
de Atocha whose devotional origin is rooted all the way to Spain.
