Android Vs iOS Operating Systems

The total number of Smartphone users reached 2.1 billion in 2016. According to The

Tool (2018), the number is expected to pass the 5 billion mark in 2019. Nowadays Google’s

Android and Apple iOS are the most popular Smartphone operating systems in the industry.

According to Melissa and Ryan ( 2018) Google’s Android and Apple’s iOS accounted for 99.7

percent of all new Smartphones shipped in 2017. That percentage rose even higher last year.

Android and iOS operating systems share some similarities such as accessibility, apps

affordability, and Calling app. However, they have a few differences such as availability,

Facetime, battery life and security.

Both Android and iOS can access and transfer the photos via USB without apps. But the

media files should use iTunes desktop apps in iOS. For this reason, many people prefer Android

where is the transfer very easy without apps. In the last few years, the Smartphone market has

grown up. Mobile devices have continued to develop in new layout, specs, and features. This has

resulted in significant increases in the manufacture of different types and shapes of

Smartphone’s.ِ Major manufactures are Samsung, Motorola, LG and Sony ( Olear, 2016),

According to Nusca.( 2017), Android ranked as the most popular operating system in

2017, because some people preferred to use different markets for the same operating system.

Therefore iOS available on iPod Touch, iPhone, iPad and Apple TV ( 2nd and 3rd generation).

For internet browsing, Google Chrome is the famous version internet browser while safari is iOS

version. The other browsers are available in both operating systems such as Internet Explorer,

Opera and Mozilla Firefox (Sande & Sadun, 2010).

However, Android and iOS are quite similar in the user interface, there are little

difference in app store affordability. Google play and apple store have 1,000,000+ apps where as

some apps are distributed as Android like Amazon and Getjar. Similarly, the calls and

messaging using 3rd party app like Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, Whatsapp and

Skype are working on android and iOS except FaceTime ( with other Apple devices) only in

iOS. Although Android has many feature, iOS has ability to reply to phone call with a canned

text message instead of answering, or set a call back reminder. It also has a Do Not Disturb mode

(Bohon, 2015). In order to the battery life management, apple batteries are generally not as big as

the largest Android batteries. However, apple is able to squeeze decent battery life via

hardware/software optimization (Evans, 2017). Regarding the file manager, this feature only is

available in the Android operating system. On the other hand, iOS users staying up to date by

receiving the software updates regularly. This updates usually generate automatically and

available to all iOS devices. Contrarily, Android does not offer the latest version for all phones

and tablets in their product line. Even when an update is offered, it is habitually several months

after the new version of android has been released.

Photos and videos backup is one of the critical needs of the user. Android apps are

available for automatic backup of photos and videos. Google allows unlimited backed up photos.

Likewise, up to 5 GB of photos and videos can be automatically backed up with iCloud. All

other vendors such as Google, Amazon, Dropbox, Flicker, and Microsoft have automatic backup

for both iOS and Android. Finally, one very important difference between iOS and Android is

the security. Most of iOS users will never encounter a problem with malware because iOS

always updates the software so that will contribute to system protection. Unlike Android, the vast

majority of Android devices are not running update fully up to date software.

However android has some advantages over iOS, iOS has a strong advantages which are

the Security and Accessibility. For this cause, majority of Smartphone shepherd in 2019 are

iphones (Melissa & Rayan 2018).

Overall , iOS and Android operating systems perform the same function. While users

prefer either iOS or Android as cause of their personal preference. It is essential that Android

address some features such as storage, battery life, and low cost whereas iOS take advantage in

some important feature such as FaceTime and security. In most aspects, iOS and Android are

quite similar and as time has gone on, the two have only grown more similar. Today the

differences are much more about access to apps than about deep differences in how they work.
