NAME OF LEARNER: _________________________________DATE: _______________

SECTION: ___________________________________

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK:

Using tools properly helps prevent accidents and damage to
equipment and people. This section describes and covers the proper use
of a variety of hardware tools specific to working with computers and
peripherals. This section also describes the proper use of common tools
used to protect, repair, and clean computers and peripherals.

“Before cleaning or
repairing equipment, “Safety in the workplace is
make sure that your everyone’s responsibility.
tools are in good You are much less likely to
condition. Clean, repair, injure yourself or damage
or replace items that are components when using
not functioning the proper tool for the job”
adequately”

II. LEARNING COMEPETENCY

Use appropriate hand tools and test equipment.

1. LET US STUDY!
Anti-Static Wrist Strap
PROPER USE OF ESD TOOLS

The purpose of self-grounding or wearing an antistatic

wrist strap is to equalize the electrical charge between you and
the equipment. Self-grounding is done by touching a bare metal
part of a computer case. The antistatic wrist strap is a
conductor that connects your body to the equipment that you
are working on. When static electricity builds up in your body,
the connection made by the wrist strap to the equipment, or
ground, channels the electricity through the wire that connects
the strap.

1. Connect the cable to the metal chassis of the computer.

2. Wrap the strap around your wrist.
3. The connection will keep your body at the same
voltage (potential) as the computer.
4. Attach the wire on the same side of the equipment as
the arm wearing the antistatic wrist strap to keep
the wire out of the way while you are working.

Although wearing a wrist strap helps prevent

ESD, you can further reduce the risks by not wearing
clothing made of silk, polyester, or wool. These fabrics
are more likely to generate a static charge.

1. Roll up your sleeves, remove scarves or ties, and tuck in

shirts to prevent interference from clothing. Ensure that
earrings, necklaces, and other loose jewelry are properly
secured.
2. Never wear an antistatic wrist strap if you are repairing a
CRT monitor or a power supply unit.

Antistatic Mat

You might not always have the option to work on a computer

in a properly equipped workspace. If you can control the
environment, try to set up your workspace away from
carpeted areas. Carpets can cause the build up of
electrostatic charges. If you cannot avoid the carpeting,
ground yourself to the unpainted portion of the case of the
computer on which you are working before touching any
components.

1. Lay the computer on the mat.

2. Connect the computer to the mat with
the cable.
3. Connect the mat to a reliable electrical
ground with its cable.
4. Now, you and the computer are at
ground potential.

1. Reducing the potential for ESD reduces

the likehood of damage to delicate circuits
or components.
2. Always handle components by the
edges.

PROPER USE OF HAND TOOLS

1. Use the proper type and size of screwdriver by matching

it to the screw.
2. Do not over tighten screws because the threads may become stripped.

Page | 4
1. If excessive force is needed to remove or add a component,
something may be wrong.
2. Magnetized tools should not be used around electronic
devices.
3. Pencils should not be used inside the computer because
the pencil lead can act as a conductor and may damage the
computer components.

PROPER USE OF CLEANING TOOLS

To clean computers and accessories:

1. Use mild cleaning solution and lint-free cloth to clean computer

cases, outside of monitor, LCD screen, CRT screen and mouse.
2. Use compressed air to clean heat sinks.
3. Use Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free swabs to clean RAM.
4. Use hand-held vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to
clean a keyboard.

1. Before cleaning any device, turn it off and unplug the

device from the power source.

COMPUTER CASES AND MONITORS

1. Mix one drop of dishwashing liquid with four ounces of

water to create the cleaning solution.
2. Clean computer cases and the outside of monitors with
solution on a damp, lint-free cloth.

1. If any water drips inside the case, allow enough time for the
liquid to dry before powering on the computer.

Page | 5
LCD SCREENS

Do not use ammoniated glass cleaners or any other solution on an

LCD screen, unless the cleaner is specifically designed for the purpose.
Harsh chemicals will damage the coating on the screen. There is no glass
protecting these screens, so be gentle when cleaning them and do not
press firmly on the screen.

CRT SCREENS

1. Dampen a soft, clean, lint-free cloth with distilled water

and wipe the screen from top to bottom.
2. Then use a soft, dry cloth to wipe the screen and remove
any streaking after you have cleaned the monitor.
3. Clean dusty components with a can of compressed air.

1. Wear a dust mask to make sure that you do not breathe in the
dust particles
2. Never tip the can or use the compressed air can upside down.
3. Do not allow the fan blades to spin from the force of the
compressed air.
4. Fan motors can be ruined from spinning when the motor is not
turned on.

COMPONENT CONTACTS

1. Clean the contacts on components with isopropyl alcohol.

2. Blow any lint off the contacts with compressed air before
reinstallation.

1. Do not use rubbing alcohol.

2. Make sure that the contacts do not collect any lint from the
cloth or cotton swab.

KEYBOARD

Page | 6
1. Clean a desktop keyboard with compressed air or a small,
hand-held vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment.

1. Never use a standard vacuum cleaner inside a computer case.

The plastic parts of the vacuum cleaner can build up static
electricity and discharge to the components. Use only a vacuum
approved for electronic components.

MOUSE

1. Use glass cleaner and a soft cloth to clean the outside of

the mouse.
2. Wipe the rollers clean inside the mouse with the same
cloth. Do not spray any liquids inside the mouse.

1. Do not spray glass cleaner directly on the mouse.

2. LET US PRACTICE!

TASK 1: SELF CHECK

Direction. Fill in the blanks.

1. The purpose of an antistatic wrist strap is to ________ the electrical

charge between you and the equipment.
2. Connect the cable to the ________ of the computer.
3. Use a ________ head screwdriver with crosshead screws.
4. To clean the screens of CRT monitors, dampen a soft, clean, lint-free
cloth with ________ water and wipe the screen from top to bottom.
5. Clean the contacts on components with ________ alcohol.
6. Use a ________ to loosen and tighten bolts that have a hexagonal (six-
sided) head.
7. The plastic parts of the vacuum cleaner can build up ________ and
discharge to the components.
. 8. Attach the wire on the same side of the equipment as the arm
wearing the ________ to keep the wire out of the way while you are
working.
9. Use mild cleaning solution and ________ to clean computer cases.
10. ________ can be ruined from spinning when the motor is not turned
on.

Page | 7
TASK 2: IDENTIFY!
Direction: Identify the appropriate tool to use for each
of the following. Write your answer on the space provided.

_________________1. Equalize the electrical charge between you and the

equipment.
_________________2. Tighten / loosen screw.
_________________3. Tighten / looses bold with a hexagonal head.
_________________4. Retrieve parts that may be hard to reach by your
fingers.
_________________5. Tighten / loosen a slotted screw.

3. GENERALIZATION

Each tool is precisely designed for a specific purpose, so choosing

the correct tool will also decrease the amount of effort required to get a
job done right without causing damage to either the equipment or the
surface being worked on. Safety in the workplace is everyone’s
responsibility. You are much less likely to injure yourself or damage
components when using the proper tool for the job.

4. EVALUATION
