OVERVIEW OF MARKETING DEPARTMENT

A marketing department promotes your business and drives sales of

its products or services. It provides the necessary research to identify
your target customers and other audiences. Depending on the
company’s hierarchical organization, a marketing director, manager
or vice president of marketing might be at the helm. In some
businesses, a vice president of sales and marketing oversees both the
marketing and sales departments with a strong manager leading each
department.

Research is a pillar of all marketing activities. Without demographic

research, product developers don’t know what features to design into
products that will appeal to customers. Publicists won’t know what
publications customers read or what industry topics journalists are
covering. Research is used to measure buying habits, product use and
opinions of your business as well as your competitors.

The better your research, the less money you will waste – for
example, by buying ads that won’t reach your customers or making a
product that no one will buy.

Connecting Customers to Products

A functional marketing department implements customer

relationship management functions to track and predict what
customers want in their products. It connects the customer to the
product with hard data as well as emotional, qualitative information

13 | P a g e
that can help product designers differentiate your products from
those of a competitor. This information also helps marketing
promotions by highlighting these differences in marketing materials.
A marketing department sets prices for products that recoup
development and promotional costs while generating revenue for the
company.

Promotions and PR

Marketing departments carry out promotional strategies for products

and services, and some may also incorporate promotional activities,
such as public relations, for the business. The promotions staff
assists the sales force with sales promotions; offers public relations
support for product launches, trade shows and other events;
purchases advertising that illustrates product benefits and features;
and pitches the product to media outlets. Promotion activities range
from creating awareness of a product to persuading customers to try
and then buy the product.

New Business Development

Marketing works closely with sales in generating new business.

Employees entice prospects to engage with your company in some
way, even if it’s just visiting the website, and then uses incentives to
get customers to continue thinking about the product so that the sales
team can convince them to buy the product. This is called generating

14 | P a g e
leads. Not every lead turn into a paying customer, so business
development is ongoing.

It can also include identifying new markets for existing products or

discovering a need that current customers have for a modified
version of an existing product.

company product description on their social media platform. I was
given the opportunity to get access with the companies online social
media platform Facebook and Instagram. These were important
platform for communication with clients.

21 | P a g e

22 | P a g e
EXPERIENCE
&
LEARNINGS

23 | P a g e
It was a wonderful experience to work in the company.

I have acquired the following skill

Not confined to the office

Supporting the marketing manager, marketing assistant roles

encompass a diverse range of tasks – some of which offer a refreshing
break from your office cubicle. Photo shoot check ins, client meetings,
trade shows and exhibitions are just some situations that require your
assistance, and alongside giving you a nice change of scenery, will add
hands on experience to your marketing skill set.

Variety of opportunity

A fast-paced environment and diverse client projects mean marketing

assistant roles will change on a day-by-day basis. While one day offers
sourcing photos and blog writing, the next brings a full day of
interviews and research.

Prime responsibility to assist means that although you won’t be solely

accountable for client projects, you will be presented with a variety of
tasks.

Getting paid to use imagination

I have landed in a company’s creative hub; marketing is where thoughts

are shared, ideas are formed, and a client’s vision will come to life.

Brainstorming sessions and marketing meetings are the outlet for all
creative content and the perfect place for you to voice your ideas. Don’t

24 | P a g e
be afraid to think outside the box – after all, that’s what marketing is
paid to do.

An excellent standpoint

When you step foot into a marketing assistant position, you get the
advantage of being able to experience a little of everything. If you’re
new to the marketing game, this provides the ideal standpoint to
discover which area of expertise takes your fancy – social media,
branding, or events, for example.

Acquire a broad skill set

Dipping your toe into each different marketing sector is not only good
for figuring out where you want to specialise, but also adds
diversification to your impressive marketing skill set.

From office duties through to the more hands-on aspects of planning

and delivery, your experience will only serve to better your marketing
career.

Stay ahead of the game

As a marketing team member, it’s your responsibility to ensure you’re

on top of trends, news, and modes of delivery as they emerge. After all,
if you’re two years too late in jumping on board the latest social media
platform, chances are you won’t be establishing yourself as a leader in
the field.

Staying ahead of these marketing trends will ensure you a better

understanding of how and why different marketing approaches work,
25 | P a g e
and will help you when you plan, construct, and deliver future
marketing projects.
