Bible Study: Where Do You Begin?

There are so many Bible study resources and instead of getting stuck on where to start, we
want to offer you a simple next step.

If you were to take one small step today, we would encourage you to start with a short
Scripture passage, like John 3:16-17.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes
in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the
world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” John 3:16-17 (NIV).

Then take this passage through an easy to follow resource the Four Rs of Bible Study:
1. Read,
2. Reflect,
3. Respond,
4. Rest in God’s Word.

If you like using the Four Rs of Bible Study, then try using it while reading through small
sections of Scripture from one of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John).

“The law of the LORD is perfect, refreshing the soul. The statutes of the
LORD are trustworthy, making wise the simple ” Psalm 19:7 (NIV).

Basics of Bible Study

There are a variety of ways to study the Bible. An easy first step for understanding the different ways
you can learn from the Bible is through The Word Hand.
Bible Study: Where Do You Begin?
“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard
through the word about Christ” Romans 10:17 (NIV).

Use the Scriptures, like Romans 10:17 (included in The Word Hand resource) to try out these five
methods of learning from the Bible: Hearing, reading, studying, memorizing, and meditation.

“The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands
of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes” Psalm 19:8 (NIV).

Create a Bible Study Habit

A great first step for cultivating time with God and a Bible study habit is to make a routine
appointment in your calendar, just like you would for spending time with a friend.

“‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear
much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing’” John 15:5 (NIV).

When you follow a daily rhythm of how to spend this time, you may be more likely to follow
through with this habit. Try out the How to Have a Daily Quiet Time resource for ideas on
how to spend time with Jesus. Start with a small amount of time and increase it as your habit
continues.

“The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever. The decrees of the LORD
are firm, and all of them are righteous” Psalm 19:9 (NIV).

Develop a Scripture Memory Habit

As you memorize Scripture, you will be surprised at how the Holy Spirit uses those Scriptures in times
when you need them most.

“I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” Psalm 119:11 (NIV).

Take the next small step by using this How to Memorize Scripture resource and begin your scripture
memory journey today.

“[The decrees of the LORD] are more precious than gold, than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the honeycomb”
Psalm 19:10 (NIV).

How God’s Word Can Change Your Life

Bible study is a powerful, transformational tool that renews your mind. This isn’t like reading other books
because the Word of God is “alive and active.”

“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword,
it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the
thoughts and attitudes of the heart” Hebrews 4:12 (NIV).

If you’ve wondered how studying the Bible can practically apply to your life, then start with How to
Personally Apply Scripture. This will take you step-by-step through how to apply what you read in
Scripture. You will see the relevance for your life today.

“By [the decrees of the LORD] your servant is warned; in keeping them
there is great reward” Psalm 19:11 (NIV).
