CONFIGURING CROSSOVER ETHERNET CABLE

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS

Last week, we learn what is a straight-through cable configuration and how to make it. We also
learn that the purpose of straight-through cable is to connect “different” devices like computer to router
junction. In this Learning Activity Sheet, we will be going to tackle the Crossover configuration cable.

Figure 1. Example of a Crossover configuration.

1|Page
Examine the Figure 1 image. What did you notice? How the two (2) computers where connected?
They are connected via crossover cable together directly. Unlike straight-through, in order for the two
computers to be connected, it must be junction in a switch or router. In a crossover, you can simply
redirect the connection between two similar devices.

Figure 2. Crossover Color-Coding Configuration

Figure 2 identifies on how you will pair the wires by using this color-coding configuration. The
color-coding configuration is as follows:

First End of the Cable

White Green Paired with Green

White Orange Paired with Blue

White Blue Paired with Orange

White Brown Paired with Brown

Other End of the Cable

White Brown Paired with Brown

Table 2. T568 B Color-Coding Configuration

Remember, the color-coding must be done differently on the two ends of the cable. The one end
can be T568 A and the other end must be T568 B.
The Tools and Procedures are the same as how straight-through cable was made. The only
difference was the color-coding procedure.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
 A crossover cable has DIFFERENT ENDS.
 Crossover is used to connect two (2) similar Ethernet devices without hub, switch, or router. (e.g.
laptop to laptop)

LEARNING COMPETENCY
Make a crossover Ethernet cable.

ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 1
Direction: Answer the following questions briefly.

1. Explain crossover configuration.

2. When would you advise to use crossover cable rather than straight-through cable?

3. In testing a crossover cable, can you say that the blinking lights are in order or not? (in
order means light number 1 from one end of the cable will blink together with light number
1 on the other end of cable, and so on) Elaborate your answer.

ACTIVITY 2
Direction: Complete the table. Side “ONE” must be T568 B.
