Setting Goals

Emotional intelligence is the ability to use emotions as a guide for social effectiveness and to respond emotionally rather than logically when needed. It aims to help individuals develop self-awareness of their emotions to guide interpersonal success. Physiologically, the emotional brain tends to dominate the rational brain and the amygdala can suppress rational thinking, interpreting events as hostile. Emotional intelligence is measured by EQ and involves self-awareness, self-regulation, social awareness, and social influence skills.

Emotional intelligence is the ability of a person to use emotions as a guiding tool for interpersonal

effectiveness in social environments. It´s also the application of emotions wisely in situations that
call for emotionally guarded rather than logically smarter responses.

It´s goal is to facilitate individuals in developing self-knowledge about who they are and where
they stand in the world of emotions to guide them toward interpersonal success.

The Biological Dynamics
The emotional brain tends to dominate over the rational brain (neocortex) and controls the
thought processes of individuals

When situations or critical moments calling for intelligent actions emerge, the amygdala
suppresses the rational processes of the neocortex, and interprets or even exaggerates the events
as hostile and dangerous to the person

How Do We Measure Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence is measured and expressed as emotional quotient (EQ). It is the measure of
the application of emotional intelligence to one’s personal and social life and talks about one’s
active skills in emotions

On’s EQ-I, and Seligman Attributional Style Questionnaire.

I feel myself surprised specifically to the low score that I gain related to the self-awareness and
showing this that I need to reinforce this aspect in a deeper way. In relation to the other aspects, I
am partially agreeing with them, because they represent me in how I act
In relation to these results, I am totally agreeing, and they do not bother me or surprise me at all,
because the only help me to reinforce who I am and my behavior.

2) What are the four components of EQ?

rational and emotional operations of the mind in a balanced way
 Social awareness: the ability to read the inner minds of others.

3) What are the physiological functions of the emotional brain?

The physiological functions of the emotional brain, it’s that this tends to dominate over the
rational brain (neocortex) due to the amygdala along with other limbic structures, which are the
ones in charge of controlling the thought processes of individuals. Also, this amygdala is the one
that suppresses the rational processes of the neocortex and interprets or even exaggerates the
events as hostile and dangerous to the person.
As an example, people who are less emotionally intelligent often obey the commands from the
amygdala that is why the person perceives these situations as threatening and starts engaging in
defensive, emotionalized behavior that can take irrational dimensions. In the other hand, in
emotionally intelligent people, the mind can detect this emotional game played by the amygdala
and its capacities are tuned for controlling the emotional involvement

awareness, because it´s an aspect that I have never noticed in that way in my life, but in general I
feel agree with the results, specifically for being a sensing, thinking and social awareness person
that matches with my personality and how I perceive myself. Due to these results, I have as goals
during this semester to be more attentive to my own person, try to develop in a better way my
empathy toward others and be a little more open with others now of making relationships

In relation to the reading and video, the most important ideas that we can highlight from these, is
the fact that emotional intelligence is an interpersonal skill that claims in the daily life an
important position in the social environment that surrounds us and that will make the difference
between success and failure inclusively in professional areas in which It’s necessary to maintain a
correct approach towards others. Also, another idea is the importance of having dignity and how
this makes the difference now to show others who we truly are and keep the thinking that we
deserve appreciation and that we are worth, that’s why shame shouldn’t be an aspect of concern,
because it's a demonstration of our empathy, humanity and that we must feel comfortable with
