Nail care is the fingernail and toenail maintenance that is important both for
health and for cosmetic reasons. Good nail care can prevent nail fungal infections,
painful fingernail and toenail infections, and skin infections in the hands and feet.
Taking care of your feet and toenails might help you avoid calluses, foot athletes,
and other problems. Manicure, pedicure, hand, and foot spa are all included in
Nail Care Services. A manicure is a beauty treatment for the fingernails and
hands that can be done at home or at a spa. Filing and shaping the nails, as well
as massaging the hands, are all part of the manicure. Pedicure, on the other
hand, is a foot and leg beauty treatment that you can do at home or at a spa
The preparation of the necessary tools and equipment for specific nail care
activity is very important in the effectiveness of nail care services. Using the right
equipment for the job will produce best result and satisfaction of the client.
In this lesson, you will be provided with the essential knowledge in preparing
the necessary tools and equipment used for specific nail care activities. After going
through the learning tasks, you will be able to:
1. identify the uses of tools and equipment according to task requirements;
2. use the tools and equipment according to task requirements; and
3. observe the safety procedures in using nail care tools and equipment.
As a nail care technician, you must be knowledgeable with the various tasks
and the tools required to accomplish each activity in nail care services. Tools, are
hand-held items or devices utilized in any nail care service and are also referred to
as implements. Equipment on the other hand, are the items which are durable
and permanent needed for a particular activity or purpose. Learning to use tools
and equipment properly assures you that you will give your client a nail care
service safely.
You are going to learn the different tools used in nail care services and their
corresponding functions according to task requirement. You can ask assistance
from the elders in your home to recognize each tool that is present inside your
household.

Pumice Stone
It is a type of volcanic rock, which is actually frothy lava
solidified to form a porous rock to remove dry and annoy-
ing skin of the feet as well as calluses.
Processing Question:
Short answer. Write your answer in a separate sheet of paper.
1. Which of the tools shown in the table are available in your home?
2. As a nail care technician, why is it important that you are
knowledgeable on the uses of each tool?
Aside from the commonly used tools, you need to be mindful with the
different equipment being utilized on the various tasks in performing nail care
services. These are the equipment and furniture or fixtures that are used in a
salon.
Pumice Stone
After soaking the feet in warm soapy water, use the
pumice stone to gently buff away cracked or dry skin of
the feet with a soft, circular motion. Never apply heavy
pressure to the pumice for this can cause sores, open
wounds and possible infection.
Callous Remover
Insert the blade into the callous remover with care. Lay the
callous remover on the top thick part of the callous. Do not
lay the blade above the area that is going to be cut, as this
may result in cutting the soft part of the foot, resulting to
open wound. Applying light pressure with a steady hand on
the callous remover, gently glide it over the callous. Repeat
the process if necessary until the callous is thinner.
Smoothen the callous with a foot file.
Emery Board
It is held in the same manner as the nail file. Bevel the rough
surface of the nail using the fine side to smoothen it. Emery
boards are discarded after use on one person.
Nail Brush
Insert the ring finger and pinky in the nail brush handle and
brush the nails with a downward motion from the base to
the fingertips to clean the nails and fingers.
Nail Buffer
Place the thumb and the ring finger under the handle of the buff-
er while the index and the middle fingers are on its top and the
pinky is on its side. Apply a small amount of powder over the
buffer then buff the nails with downward strokes from the base
to the free edge of each nail until a smooth clear gloss has been
obtained. Buffing helps in giving the nail natural gloss and in-
creases blood circulation to the finger tips. To prevent heating
and burning sensation, lift the buffer from the nail after each
stroke.
Nail File
Hold the file firmly in the right or left hand (as the case may be),
with the thumb underneath it for support and the other four
fingers on its upper surface. Place the file slightly under the
free edge and file the nail from corner to center, shaping the
nail. Never file back and forth; this would cause the nails to
crack and split. Do not file deep into the corners; this weakens
the nails, hurt the skin and cause ingrown nails.
Orangewood Stick
It is held in the same manner as in writing with a pencil. To
loosen cuticle, work around nail; for applying oil or solvent,
slightly dip the cotton-tipped orangewood stick and work
around the base of the nail; to clean under the free edge of the
nail, from the center toward each side, with gentle pressure so
that live tissue at the root of the nail will not be injured.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are vital in performing nail care services
to protect a nail care technician or salon staff from the harmful effects of
chemicals.

Learning Task 6: Reflect on your knowledge, skills and attitudes in relation to
the use of tools and equipment while observing safety procedures in performing
nail care services. Copy and use the KSA template below on a separate sheet of
paper for your reflection:
Therefore, after going through the learning activities in this lesson you will
be able to perform basic preventive and corrective maintenance of nail care tools
and equipment. Specifically, you will be able to perform the following tasks:
1. Clean tools according to standard procedures.
2. Inspect defective tools and equipment.
Everything in the salon has some kind of hard or soft surface which
needs to be given preventive and corrective maintenance. Remember that
almost everything in the salon has some kind of hard or soft surface. Some
examples are manicuring tabletops and arm cushions, finger bowls, towels,
files/buffers, implements, etc. Any of these surfaces that come into close
contact with the skin of a client is deemed "contaminated." All contaminated
surfaces must be cleansed and disinfected fully and effectively.
1. Tools which are made of plastic should be kept clean and sanitized
properly in preparation for the next patron.
2. Empty bottles and containers are discarded in a covered trash bin.
3. Used treatment products and other chemicals are stored, arranged
and properly labeled in the cabinet.
4. Finger bowls must be sanitized before use of every client.
5. The hand and foot spa machines must be flushed with a solution of
about 5% bleach and circulate the liquid through the system for at
least 10 minutes.
6. Leave the solution in the hand and foot spa machines overnight or
at least 5-10 hours before draining the machines so that they are
thoroughly sanitized.
7. Table tops and door handles are wiped with disinfectant and the
floor should be mopped with disinfectant as well.
8. Metal tools and instruments must be sterilized following proper
sterilization techniques. After the process, store in a dry cabinet
until needed.
9. Tools/Implements which are made of porous materials such as nail
files, buffers, nail brushes and orangewood sticks can harbor
bacteria easily. Since they are wood products which cannot be
sterilized, these tools should not be reused.
10. Waste materials should be disposed properly in an enclosed waste
bin fitted with polythene bag. The bin should be sanitized with
disinfectant regularly in a well-ventilated area. Remember to wear
protective gloves while doing this.
11. Contaminated wastes should be disposed off as recommended by
local authority.
12. Any tool or equipment in poor condition must be repaired
Immediately or disposed properly so as not to pose danger to the
clients as well as the beauticians.
How can tools and equipment be kept safe, clean and functional?
1. Sterilize metal implements after each use in a hospital-grade disinfectant that
is bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal. Immerse the tools in the disinfectant
for 10 minutes.
2. Disinfect foot basins after each use with a bleach solution. Make a 1-to-10
solution by mixing one part bleach with 10 parts water. Using gloves, rinse the
basin with the solution to disinfect. If necessary, scrub with a detergent to
remove any dirt or debris.
3. Use a boiling method of sterilization once a month to disinfect all metal
implements. Designate one pot for sterilization to prevent cross-contamination
with food. Submerge the tools in boiling water for 10 minutes. Drain the tools
and allow them to dry.
4. Store sterilized metal implements in an airtight, zipper-sealed bag to keep them
from being exposed to dirt and bacteria. Be sure tools are completely dry before
storing them. If waiting more than a couple of weeks before the next nail care
service, sterilize the tools again before use.
5. Inspect tools and equipment regularly to identify defective ones for repair,
replacement or condemnation.
Learning Task 5: Draw or illustrate the selected steps to follow after every nail
care session. Use a separate sheet of paper for your answer. Be guided by the
given rubric.
Learning Task 8: Reflect on the knowledge, skills and attitudes you gained
from these two weeks lesson on basic preventive and corrective maintenance of
nail care tools and equipment. Copy and use the KSA template below on a
separate sheet of paper for your reflection.
I
Appropriate knowledge and skills in preventive and corrective maintenance
of tools and equipment is necessary in providing excellent nail care services.
The previous week of this module provided you with ample amount of
information on standard procedures in cleaning and inspecting tools and
equipment. Undeniably, using clean tools and equipment ensures a proper nail
care which results to healthy and strong nails.
Your responsibility as a nail care technician is not only applying nail polish
but one of your challenging duties is to keep your clients’ nail clean, healthy, and
strong. Therefore, having the knowledge and deep awareness about the nail, its’
structure and shapes is important to give the best nail care service you can offer.
After completing this lesson, you should be able to:
1. identify nail structure and shapes
2. perform nail trimmings to varied shapes
The nail is a transparent platelike keratinous structure made up of highly
specialized epithelial cells. The main purpose of the nail is to protect the fingers
and toes, however, the fingernail also assists with certain physical activities in
daily life.
Nails are accessory organs of the skin. They are made of sheets of dead
keratinocytes and are found on the far, or distal, ends of the fingers and toes.
The keratin in nails makes them hard but flexible.
The tip of the fingers and toes are protected by the nail, which is a horny,
transparent plate. Keratin, a protein molecule that forms the foundation of all
horny tissue, makes up the majority of it. The nail is pale and translucent,
allowing the reddish color of the nail bed to show through. There are no nerves or
blood vessels in the horny plate.
The technical term for the nail is onyx. The state of the nail, like the state of
the skin, indicates the body's overall health. The study of nails is known as
onychology. The nails vary in thickness, being heaviest on the thumbs and big
toes. Healthy nails are firm and flexible, slightly pink in color, and have a
smooth, curved, and unspotted surface, free of hollows or wavy ridges.
Important Purposes of Nails:
• They help humans function. Nails are basically flat versions of claws that
help humans dig, climb, scratch, grab, and more.
• They guard against injuries. They serve as protective plates that help
prevent the fingers and toes from getting cut or scraped during daily activities.
• They enhance the sensation. The fingers and toes contain nerve endings
that allow the body to process the volumes of information that it receives every
time something is touched—and the nail acts as a counterforce, providing
even more sensory input after a person touches something.

1. Identify the nail structure and shapes.
“Nails are a reflection of your overall health,” Dr. Lipner says. “Keep an eye
on your nails, and if you notice a change in the color, texture or shape of your
nail, see a board-certified dermatologist. While some changes are harmless, others
could be a sign of a disease, such as melanoma, or an infection, such as a nail
fungal infection.”
Nails are continually developing, but due to poor circulation and aging, their
rate of growth slows. Fingernails grow three millimeters per month faster than
toenails. A fingernail takes six months to develop from the root to the free tip.
Toenails grow at a much slower rate, measuring just 1 millimeter per month.
From root to tip, a toenail takes 12 to 18 months to develop.
Nail Structures
Fingernails grow from the matrix. The nails are composed largely of keratin,
a hardened protein. As new cells grow in the matrix, the older cells are pushed
out, compacted and take on the familiar flattened, hardened form of the
fingernail.
It is very essential for a manicurist to have knowledge on the different parts
of the nails for this will be a basis in giving nail care services to clients. The nail is
an appendage of the skin. The figure below shows the diagram of the nail and its
structures.
Oval Shape
This is common among people with long, perfect nail beds. It may
be styled slightly rounded at the base and slightly pointed at the
fingertips. Most often this type of nail has a natural look and
looks very good in a short-medium length.
The tapered sidewalls of the oval create an elegant shape for
women. Oval shapes flatter both wide and narrow nail beds and add length
with a graceful tip. To achieve the perfect oval shape, file sidewalls straight to
make sure they are even. Then, shape the sidewalls into a rounded oval,
making sure the angles are even on each side.
—∞∞∞∞—
Square Shape
This is the most famous among the nail shapes and is referred to as
classic shape. For a larger nail bed, the square is ideal (it tends to
make smaller nail beds look shorter and wider).
- File the sidewalls straight and perpendicular to the free edge of the nail to
achieve this timeless shape.
- Angle your emery board and bevel the nail once you've achieved the ideal
square.
—∞∞∞∞—
Round Shape
—∞∞∞∞—
Stiletto/
Pointed Shape
In Eastern Europe and Asia, the pointed nail is a popular style for
acrylic and nail art designs. While its severe design isn't ideal for
regular wear, it can slim and lengthen the fingers. This shape is very weak as the
sides of the nail (which provide the strength) are totally lost
- File the sidewalls evenly and taper until you've reached the desired tip.
Gather the proper tools. Use a nail clipper or nail scissors for your
2 fingernails and a toenail clipper for your toenails. Remember to disinfect
your tools monthly. To disinfect them, soak a small scrub brush in a bowl
o f 70 to 90 percent isopropyl alcohol and then use the brush to scrub your nail
clippers or nail scissors. Afterwards, rinse the tools in hot water and dry them
completely before putting them away.
To trim your fingernails, cut almost straight across the nail. Use a nail
3 file or emery board to slightly round the nails at the corners, as this will
help keep them strong and prevent them from catching on things like
clothing or furniture.
Smooth uneven or rough edges using a nail file or emery board. Always
5 file the nail in the same direction, as filing back and forth can weaken
your nails.
Leave your cuticles alone. Cuticles protect the nail root, so it’s important
6 to avoid cutting your cuticles or pushing them back. When you trim or cut
your cuticles, it’s easier for bacteria and other germs to get inside your
body and cause an infection. If you get a nail infection, it can sometimes take
a long time to clear.
Learning Task 2: Word Search Puzzle. Find ten (10) important words in the box.
Use separate sheet of paper for your answer.
Learning Task 6: In a separate sheet of paper, draw your fingernail. Identify and
label the parts of the nail structure, as well as their functions. Use the
illustration in the beginning of this lesson and template below as your guide.
Drawing Rubric below will be used to rate your performance in this learning
task.
Add all the scores to get the grand total and then divide it by the total
number of items. Refer to the verbal interpretation on the table below to determine
the client satisfaction on your performance.
If your clients’ total checks belong to Highly Satisfied, it means that you
performed well in the activity. However, if the client marked satisfied with your
performance it means that there is some point that you need to pay attention.
Likewise, if the clients’ mark is neutral it means you need to work harder to
develop your skills. Finally, if they marked dissatisfied or highly dissatisfied, it
means that you need to improve on performing the procedures in trimming the
nail. Do not get sad or upset because from this experience I am sure that you will
strive harder to learn and perform better.
A
Learning Task 8: Read and understand the following questions. Use
separate sheet of paper for your answer.
- I was able to do/perform the task without any difficulty. The task helped
me in understanding the target content/lesson.
- I was able to do/perform the task. It was quite challenging but it still
helped me in understanding the target content/lesson.
- I was not able to do/perform the task. It was extremely difficult. I need
additional enrichment activities to be able to do/perform this task.
Note: If the lesson is designed for two or more weeks as shown in the ear tag, just copy
your personal evaluation indicated in the first Level of Performance found in the second
column up to the succeeding columns, ie. if the lesson is designed for weeks 5-8, just copy
your personal evaluation indicated in the LP column for week 5, week 6, week 7 and week
8. Thank you
