Nail Care Tools and Equipment
Lesson

I
Nail care is the fingernail and toenail maintenance that is important both for
health and for cosmetic reasons. Good nail care can prevent nail fungal infections,
painful fingernail and toenail infections, and skin infections in the hands and feet.
Taking care of your feet and toenails might help you avoid calluses, foot athletes,
and other problems. Manicure, pedicure, hand, and foot spa are all included in
Nail Care Services. A manicure is a beauty treatment for the fingernails and
hands that can be done at home or at a spa. Filing and shaping the nails, as well
as massaging the hands, are all part of the manicure. Pedicure, on the other
hand, is a foot and leg beauty treatment that you can do at home or at a spa
The preparation of the necessary tools and equipment for specific nail care
activity is very important in the effectiveness of nail care services. Using the right
equipment for the job will produce best result and satisfaction of the client.
In this lesson, you will be provided with the essential knowledge in preparing
the necessary tools and equipment used for specific nail care activities. After going
through the learning tasks, you will be able to:
1. identify the uses of tools and equipment according to task requirements;
2. use the tools and equipment according to task requirements; and
3. observe the safety procedures in using nail care tools and equipment.

As a nail care technician, you must be knowledgeable with the various tasks
and the tools required to accomplish each activity in nail care services. Tools, are
hand-held items or devices utilized in any nail care service and are also referred to
as implements. Equipment on the other hand, are the items which are durable
and permanent needed for a particular activity or purpose. Learning to use tools
and equipment properly assures you that you will give your client a nail care
service safely.

You are going to learn the different tools used in nail care services and their
corresponding functions according to task requirement. You can ask assistance
from the elders in your home to recognize each tool that is present inside your
household.

Processing Question:
Write your answer on the same sheet of paper (at the back) that you used earli-
er in the presentation of nail care tools.
1. Which of the equipment are you familiar with?
2. Why do you think it is important to know the functions of each
each equipment?

2. Use the tools and equipment according to task requirements

As a nail care technician, you must be skilled in using the different nail
care tools and equipment according to task requirements.
The following shows the proper way of holding and handling some nail care tools
or implements and equipment:

Pumice Stone
After soaking the feet in warm soapy water, use the
pumice stone to gently buff away cracked or dry skin of
the feet with a soft, circular motion. Never apply heavy
pressure to the pumice for this can cause sores, open
wounds and possible infection.

Foot and Hand Spa Machine

Make sure that electrical wirings are dry and
protected from accidental water spillage. Set the
machine to the temperature that the client can
withstand.

Callous Remover
Insert the blade into the callous remover with care. Lay the
callous remover on the top thick part of the callous. Do not
lay the blade above the area that is going to be cut, as this
may result in cutting the soft part of the foot, resulting to
open wound. Applying light pressure with a steady hand on
the callous remover, gently glide it over the callous. Repeat
the process if necessary until the callous is thinner.
Smoothen the callous with a foot file.

Cuticle Nail Pusher

It is held in the same manner as in writing with a pencil.
The dull spade side is used to push back and loosen the
cuticles. Keep cuticle moist using cuticle remover while
working. Use the cuticle pusher in a flat position to remove
dead cuticle adhering to the nail without scratching the nail
plate. In using the pusher, avoid too much pressure to
prevent injury on tissues.
9 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Nail Care G7/8
Cuticle Nipper
Pick up the cuticle nipper by the handles and turn the cutting
edges towards you; place the bent tip of the index finger over
the top of the shank. Place the thumb on the side of the handle
and the remaining fingers over the opposite handle. Use it with
utmost care to remove dead cuticle and hangnails so as not to
injure live tissue.

Emery Board
It is held in the same manner as the nail file. Bevel the rough
surface of the nail using the fine side to smoothen it. Emery
boards are discarded after use on one person.

Nail Brush
Insert the ring finger and pinky in the nail brush handle and
brush the nails with a downward motion from the base to
the fingertips to clean the nails and fingers.

Nail Buffer
Place the thumb and the ring finger under the handle of the buff-
er while the index and the middle fingers are on its top and the
pinky is on its side. Apply a small amount of powder over the
buffer then buff the nails with downward strokes from the base
to the free edge of each nail until a smooth clear gloss has been
obtained. Buffing helps in giving the nail natural gloss and in-
creases blood circulation to the finger tips. To prevent heating
and burning sensation, lift the buffer from the nail after each
stroke.
Nail File
Hold the file firmly in the right or left hand (as the case may be),
with the thumb underneath it for support and the other four
fingers on its upper surface. Place the file slightly under the
free edge and file the nail from corner to center, shaping the
nail. Never file back and forth; this would cause the nails to
crack and split. Do not file deep into the corners; this weakens
the nails, hurt the skin and cause ingrown nails.

Orangewood Stick
It is held in the same manner as in writing with a pencil. To
loosen cuticle, work around nail; for applying oil or solvent,
slightly dip the cotton-tipped orangewood stick and work
around the base of the nail; to clean under the free edge of the
nail, from the center toward each side, with gentle pressure so
that live tissue at the root of the nail will not be injured.

3. Observe the safety procedures in using nail care tools and equipment
In addition, it is very important that you have knowledge on the safety
procedures in using tools and equipment. They are generally written methods
outlining how to perform a task with the list amount of risk to people,
equipment, materials, environment, and processes.

The following are the safety procedures and practices in

using tools and equipment:
√ You should always check any tool or equipment before use.
√ If there is a broken or damaged electrical equipment, DO NOT use it,
instead, put a tag that must warn people not to use the equipment.
√ You should not touch equipment with wet hands.
√ Do not use a wet cloth to clean sockets.
√ Clean-up spills straight away.
√ Use mats on slippery floors.
√ Store tools and equipment on a covered container or storage in a clean,
dry and dust free environment.
√ Always use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) are vital in performing nail care services
to protect a nail care technician or salon staff from the harmful effects of
chemicals.

The following are the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and

Nail salon workers can protect their skin through proper hand washing,
wearing gloves, and covering any open wounds on their exposed skin. Nitrile
gloves, which are typically purple or blue in color, should be worn during all
services. The gloves should be immediately replaced if there is a tear, hole, or
puncture in them. A new pair of nitrile gloves should also be used with each
client.
11 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Nail Care G7/8
Wearing safety glasses or goggles provides some protection in case of
chemical splashes and airborne nail or artificial (acrylic) nail particles, as well as
limits eye irritation.
In addition to the safety procedures, you must have in mind the safety
protocols in this time of pandemic. Social distancing, wearing of face shield and
mask must always be observed. Likewise, washing of hands and using alcohol
and sanitizers are great agents to prevent the spread of virus.

WEEKS
Basic Preventive and Corrective Maintenance
3-4 of Nail Care Tools and Equipment
Lesson
I
Having the adequate knowledge about tools and equipment is essential in
nail care services for they are the foundation in performing different nail care
tasks. On the previous weeks you were given developmental activities and
learning tasks to be able to identify, use and observe safety procedures of using
tools and equipment according to task requirements. This week, you will be
acquainted with preventive and corrective maintenance of nail care tools and
equipment that is equally important in nail care services.

Preventive maintenance is a strategy that is carried out in a regular basis

which means that all tools and equipment is inspected regularly even if there is
no sign of failure. By doing so, any tool and equipment failure is avoided and
prevented to make sure that they are functioning well and safe to use. This
maintenance routine requires a maintenance plan to ensure reliability of tools
and equipment in terms of performance and safety of the people.
On the other hand, corrective maintenance is a set of technical tasks
which are designed to repair tools and equipment as there is a need to fix or even
replace them. This kind of maintenance is used to correct errors which needs to
be repaired to restore its function. It does not require a maintenance plan be-
cause the problem should be solved immediately since failure is not predicted.
This means that this type of maintenance is only performed when there is failure
and malfunction.

Therefore, after going through the learning activities in this lesson you will
be able to perform basic preventive and corrective maintenance of nail care tools
and equipment. Specifically, you will be able to perform the following tasks:
1. Clean tools according to standard procedures.
2. Inspect defective tools and equipment.

Everything in the salon has some kind of hard or soft surface which
needs to be given preventive and corrective maintenance. Remember that
almost everything in the salon has some kind of hard or soft surface. Some
examples are manicuring tabletops and arm cushions, finger bowls, towels,
files/buffers, implements, etc. Any of these surfaces that come into close
contact with the skin of a client is deemed "contaminated." All contaminated
surfaces must be cleansed and disinfected fully and effectively.

PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Nail Care G7/8 16

The following are important term/s related to cleaning tools according to standard
procedures:
• Disinfection requires soaking the implement in disinfectant solution for a full
ten minutes. This step kills any leftover pathogens on the tool, making it safe for
you to use on your next client.
• Multi-use tools and implements are sometimes referred to as “disinfectable”,
which means that the implement can be properly cleaned and disinfected while
retaining its usefulness and quality. Multi-use items are designed to use on
more than one client, but require proper cleaning and disinfection between each
use. Examples of multi-use items include cloth towels, manicure bowls, nippers,
pushers and certain abrasive files and buffers.
• Porous tools and supplies composed of materials such as cloth or wood with
surfaces that may absorb or are penetrated by liquids, i.e. scrub brushes for
nails, cushioned abrasive buffers, cloth towels and chamois.
• Non-Porous tools and supplies composed of hard materials that do not absorb
liquid, i.e. metal, glass, fiberglass or plastic.
• Sanitation is the application of measures to promote public health and prevent
the spread of infectious diseases. The observance of safety rules in the salon
industry can be of great help in preventing accidents and injury to anyone in the
salon. It also refers to the maintenance of hygienic conditions, through
services such as garbage collection and wastewater disposal.”

1. Clean tools according to standard procedures.

Cleaning is a term that we are all familiar with. It is the process of removing
undesired things from objects or the environment, such as dirt, pollutants, and
infectious agents. Cleaning takes place in a variety of business, personal, home,
and environmental settings, each with its own scale.
What is the difference between antiseptic and disinfectant?
Antiseptic is an agent that prevents the Disinfectant is a substance used to

and viruses that can infect the human
body and cause various diseases.
17 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Nail Care G7/8
Remember, when you sanitize, you remove the majority of bacteria, viruses,
and fungi, while disinfection kills the remaining amount. You must sanitize before
disinfecting, or the bits of debris that come off in the disinfecting solution break
down the solution’s active ingredients, and make it less effective.
Sterilization and sanitization techniques which are being practiced in the
beauty salon involve the use of physical agents like heat and radiation; and
chemical agents like antiseptics and vapor fumigants. While cleaning is concerned
with eliminating dirt and impurities, sanitization destroys and eradicates bacteria
and all forms of microorganisms. Keep in mind that all tools, implements, and
equipment should not be utilized unless they have been thoroughly cleansed or
sterilized to prevent illnesses, and that all things on the trolley are neatly
organized. Personal cleanliness should be a priority for all beauticians. Whenever
possible, use disposable products.
As a nail care technician, it is vital to sterilize metal implements, sanitize
wooden tools, disinfect hand and foot spa machines as well as environmental
surfaces before and after conducting nail care service. Contaminated tools can
cause bacterial and fungal infections that are unsightly, painful and sometimes,
fatal. There are several methods of cleaning and sterilization. To keep tools and
equipment safe and usable all of the time, do a quick cleaning after each nail
session and a comprehensive deep-cleaning once a month.

To ensure a sanitary manicure every time, follow these simple steps:
1. Clean clippers, glass files, and cuticle nippers regularly. Wipe off any debris,
wash with soap and water, and disinfect by rubbing with an alcohol-soaked
cotton ball.
2. Don’t share emery boards. Because they are made of paper, they can’t be
properly sanitized. Replace them when the grit begins to wear down or filing
your nails no longer produces smooth results.
3. Store tools properly. Place dry, disinfected implements in an airtight container.
This will keep them germ-free.
PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Nail Care G7/8 18
All tools, implements, and equipment should not be used until they have
been properly sanitized or sterilized to avoid diseases, and that all products on
the trolley are neatly arranged. Personal hygiene should be a priority for all
beauticians. Using disposable goods whenever possible is highly recommended.

Sanitation Procedures to be observed in giving nail services

1. Manicuring implements must be cleaned and disinfected after each use.
2. Place used materials (tissues, cotton, emery board, etc.) into closed con-
tainers or plastic bag attached to manicuring table.
3. Wipe manicuring table with disinfectant; put everything in order.
4. Clean the tops of nail polish bottles with polish remover.
5. Inspect the manicuring table drawer for cleanliness and order.
6. Wash and dry your hands.

Steps to follow after every nail care session:

1. Tools which are made of plastic should be kept clean and sanitized
properly in preparation for the next patron.
2. Empty bottles and containers are discarded in a covered trash bin.
3. Used treatment products and other chemicals are stored, arranged
and properly labeled in the cabinet.
4. Finger bowls must be sanitized before use of every client.
5. The hand and foot spa machines must be flushed with a solution of
about 5% bleach and circulate the liquid through the system for at
least 10 minutes.
6. Leave the solution in the hand and foot spa machines overnight or
at least 5-10 hours before draining the machines so that they are
thoroughly sanitized.
7. Table tops and door handles are wiped with disinfectant and the
floor should be mopped with disinfectant as well.
8. Metal tools and instruments must be sterilized following proper
sterilization techniques. After the process, store in a dry cabinet
until needed.
9. Tools/Implements which are made of porous materials such as nail
files, buffers, nail brushes and orangewood sticks can harbor
bacteria easily. Since they are wood products which cannot be
sterilized, these tools should not be reused.
10. Waste materials should be disposed properly in an enclosed waste
bin fitted with polythene bag. The bin should be sanitized with
disinfectant regularly in a well-ventilated area. Remember to wear
protective gloves while doing this.
11. Contaminated wastes should be disposed off as recommended by
local authority.
12. Any tool or equipment in poor condition must be repaired
Immediately or disposed properly so as not to pose danger to the
clients as well as the beauticians.

19 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Nail Care G7/8

2. Inspect defective tools and equipment

Tools and equipment are extensively examined to determine which

function efficiently and which are not. In compliance with salon requirements
and local health legislation, functional tools and equipment are stored safely.
Non-functional or faulty tools and equipment are separated and appropriately
labeled for repair or disposal.

How can tools and equipment be kept safe, clean and functional?
1. Sterilize metal implements after each use in a hospital-grade disinfectant that
is bactericidal, virucidal, and fungicidal. Immerse the tools in the disinfectant
for 10 minutes.
2. Disinfect foot basins after each use with a bleach solution. Make a 1-to-10
solution by mixing one part bleach with 10 parts water. Using gloves, rinse the
basin with the solution to disinfect. If necessary, scrub with a detergent to
remove any dirt or debris.
3. Use a boiling method of sterilization once a month to disinfect all metal
implements. Designate one pot for sterilization to prevent cross-contamination
with food. Submerge the tools in boiling water for 10 minutes. Drain the tools
and allow them to dry.
4. Store sterilized metal implements in an airtight, zipper-sealed bag to keep them
from being exposed to dirt and bacteria. Be sure tools are completely dry before
storing them. If waiting more than a couple of weeks before the next nail care
service, sterilize the tools again before use.
5. Inspect tools and equipment regularly to identify defective ones for repair,
replacement or condemnation.

How to Keep the Workplace Clean and Safe?

1. All beauty salons must be well-lighted and well-ventilated and must be in good
sanitary condition
2. The salon premises must be free from rodents, vermin, flies or other similar
insects.
3. All salon establishments must be provided with continuous running hot and
cold water.
4. The curtains and floor coverings in the salon must be washable and kept
clean.
5. All hair, used cotton or other waste materials must be removed from the floor
immediately, and deposited in a closed container. Get rid of them from the
salon premises at frequent intervals.
6. The rest rooms must be well-sanitized and be provided with individual towels.
7. Each beautician must wear a washable uniform while working on clients.
8. Each client must be provided with a freshly laundered towel.
9. All waste materials should be disposed of in an enclosed waste bin fitted with
polythene bin liner, durable enough to resist tearing.

WEEKS
5-8
Nail Structure and Shapes
Lesson

I
Appropriate knowledge and skills in preventive and corrective maintenance
of tools and equipment is necessary in providing excellent nail care services.
The previous week of this module provided you with ample amount of
information on standard procedures in cleaning and inspecting tools and
equipment. Undeniably, using clean tools and equipment ensures a proper nail
care which results to healthy and strong nails.
Your responsibility as a nail care technician is not only applying nail polish
but one of your challenging duties is to keep your clients’ nail clean, healthy, and
strong. Therefore, having the knowledge and deep awareness about the nail, its’
structure and shapes is important to give the best nail care service you can offer.
After completing this lesson, you should be able to:
1. identify nail structure and shapes
2. perform nail trimmings to varied shapes
The nail is a transparent platelike keratinous structure made up of highly
specialized epithelial cells. The main purpose of the nail is to protect the fingers
and toes, however, the fingernail also assists with certain physical activities in
daily life.
Nails are accessory organs of the skin. They are made of sheets of dead
keratinocytes and are found on the far, or distal, ends of the fingers and toes.
The keratin in nails makes them hard but flexible.
The tip of the fingers and toes are protected by the nail, which is a horny,
transparent plate. Keratin, a protein molecule that forms the foundation of all
horny tissue, makes up the majority of it. The nail is pale and translucent,
allowing the reddish color of the nail bed to show through. There are no nerves or
blood vessels in the horny plate.
The technical term for the nail is onyx. The state of the nail, like the state of
the skin, indicates the body's overall health. The study of nails is known as
onychology. The nails vary in thickness, being heaviest on the thumbs and big
toes. Healthy nails are firm and flexible, slightly pink in color, and have a
smooth, curved, and unspotted surface, free of hollows or wavy ridges.
Important Purposes of Nails:
• They help humans function. Nails are basically flat versions of claws that
help humans dig, climb, scratch, grab, and more.
• They guard against injuries. They serve as protective plates that help
prevent the fingers and toes from getting cut or scraped during daily activities.
• They enhance the sensation. The fingers and toes contain nerve endings
that allow the body to process the volumes of information that it receives every
time something is touched—and the nail acts as a counterforce, providing
even more sensory input after a person touches something.

1. Identify the nail structure and shapes.

“Nails are a reflection of your overall health,” Dr. Lipner says. “Keep an eye
on your nails, and if you notice a change in the color, texture or shape of your
nail, see a board-certified dermatologist. While some changes are harmless, others
could be a sign of a disease, such as melanoma, or an infection, such as a nail
fungal infection.”
Nails are continually developing, but due to poor circulation and aging, their
rate of growth slows. Fingernails grow three millimeters per month faster than
toenails. A fingernail takes six months to develop from the root to the free tip.
Toenails grow at a much slower rate, measuring just 1 millimeter per month.
From root to tip, a toenail takes 12 to 18 months to develop.

Nail Structures
Fingernails grow from the matrix. The nails are composed largely of keratin,
a hardened protein. As new cells grow in the matrix, the older cells are pushed
out, compacted and take on the familiar flattened, hardened form of the
fingernail.
It is very essential for a manicurist to have knowledge on the different parts
of the nails for this will be a basis in giving nail care services to clients. The nail is
an appendage of the skin. The figure below shows the diagram of the nail and its
structures.

PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Nail Care G7/8 26

The following are the important parts of the nail:
Nail Body or Nail Plate is the visible portion of the nail that is attached to the
nail bed. It is the portion of the nail that is external to the skin.
Free edge is the end portion of the nail plate, which extends beyond the
fingertip. It is the part of the nail that can be filed and shaped. It is an
extension of the nail plate that overlaps the hyponychium.
Nail root is the beginning of nail found at the base and is embedded
underneath the skin. It is known as the germinal matrix. It produces most of
the volume of the nail and the nail bed.

The following are the structures beneath the nail:

Nail Bed is the skin upon which the nail body or nail plate rests. It is
supplied with many blood vessels and nerves. The blood vessels supply nour-
ishment for the nail.
Matrix is part of the nail bed, which contains nerves and blood vessels and
is located beneath the nail root. It is the only living reproducing part of the
nail. This is situated directly below the cuticle. It produces cells that
generate and harden the nail and will continue to grow as long as it receives
nutrition and remains in a healthy condition. If the matrix is damaged the
nail will grow deformed.
Lunula is a half-moon shape found at the base of the nail where the matrix
connects with the nail bed. is the visible portion of the distal nail matrix that
extends beyond the proximal nailfold. It has a primary structural role in
defining the free edge of the distal nail plate.

The following are the structures surrounding the nail:

Cuticle is the overlapping epidermis around the nail. It is the transparent
skin, which is called the 'true cuticle', that is removed during the
manicuring process. A normal cuticle should be loose and pliable.
Eponychium is the cuticle extension at the base of the nail body, which
partly overlaps the lunula
Hyponychium is portion of the skin under the free edge of the nail. It is
the skin line where the nail plate separates from the nail bed.
Nail Fold is the tissue that encloses the nail matrix at the root of the nail.
It attaches the nail to the rest of the skin through the protective cuticle.
Nail Walls refers to the folds of the skin overlapping the sides of the nail.
They hold your nail in place and protect the nail plate edges.
Nail Grooves are slits or tracks in the skin at the side of the nail upon
which the nail moves as it grows.
Mantle is a deep fold of the skin in which the nail root is embedded.

Nail Shapes
Are you aware of the shape of your nails? Do you know what form your nails
should be for the manicure you want? Now is the time to learn about the many
varieties of nail shapes.
Before you begin, you should evaluate your client's hands and their
condition. Prepare for nail repair if you discover any irregularities. For sanitary
reasons, you should give your client with protective materials and equipment.
Nutrition, overall health, and sickness are among factors that can influence
the growth of nails. Starting from the matrix and extending to the tip of the finger,
a nail grows forward. Nails, like hair, grow faster in warm weather. The average
adult's nail grows roughly 1/8 inch every month, whereas children's nails grow
quicker than the elderlies. Toenails grow more slowly than fingernails, but they
are thicker and firmer.
Nails come in four different forms. Before you begin working on your client's
nails, you should agree on the optimal nail shape for both of you. For a more
natural look, it should adhere to the shape of the fingertips. Shorter nails are
preferred by people who do most of their job with their hands to avoid breaking
and harm.
When selecting a nail shape, it is essential to familiarize yourself with the
different options available. Bear in mind that nail conforms to that of fingertips of
an individual. Nail shape is the foundation and basis of a goof manicure. The
right shape will flatter your entire hand and make it look more appealing, in
addition to complementing your choice of color or design. The form of your
manicure has more strength than you might imagine, from elongating short
fingers to accentuating nice nails.
How can you choose the perfect nail shape for you?
Try a squoval shape if your nail beds are wide. If they're too thin, broaden
and strengthen them with a sharp square shape. A rounded shape is your best
chance for low-maintenance styling if you keep your nails short. You can also get
nail-shaping advice from the lunula (the half-moon shape on your nail bed). Try
oval or rounded if it's more curved.
The following illustration is your visual guide in identifying the different
shapes of nail.

Oval Shape

This is common among people with long, perfect nail beds. It may
be styled slightly rounded at the base and slightly pointed at the
fingertips. Most often this type of nail has a natural look and
looks very good in a short-medium length.
The tapered sidewalls of the oval create an elegant shape for
women. Oval shapes flatter both wide and narrow nail beds and add length
with a graceful tip. To achieve the perfect oval shape, file sidewalls straight to
make sure they are even. Then, shape the sidewalls into a rounded oval,
making sure the angles are even on each side.

PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Nail Care G7/8 28

—∞∞∞∞—
Square Oval / Squoval Shape

This style combines the angular contouring of square nails with

the length of oval nails. It’s great for fingernail tips that have some
length and prefer a bit more dimension that square or oval.
- Begin with a square with even and straight sidewalls.
- File the corners until you have a rounded and beveled free edge.
- Keep in mind that you still need strong side supports, so don't get too carried
away with the files.

—∞∞∞∞—
Square Shape

This is the most famous among the nail shapes and is referred to as
classic shape. For a larger nail bed, the square is ideal (it tends to
make smaller nail beds look shorter and wider).
- File the sidewalls straight and perpendicular to the free edge of the nail to
achieve this timeless shape.
- Angle your emery board and bevel the nail once you've achieved the ideal
square.

—∞∞∞∞—
Round Shape

The round form is one of the most conservative of the group,

making it suited for men and people who prefer short nails. This
shape is ideal for wide nails since it creates the appearance of a
thinner nail bed. The nail is allowed to grow out straight at the sides for
approximately 1.5 mm.
- File the sidewalls straight like a square, then round the free edge into that
perfect swooping circle.

—∞∞∞∞—
Stiletto/
Pointed Shape

In Eastern Europe and Asia, the pointed nail is a popular style for
acrylic and nail art designs. While its severe design isn't ideal for
regular wear, it can slim and lengthen the fingers. This shape is very weak as the
sides of the nail (which provide the strength) are totally lost
- File the sidewalls evenly and taper until you've reached the desired tip.

2. Perform nail trimmings to varied shapes

Nail trimming as part of personal hygiene is a basic yet effective form of

self-care. Short, well-kept nails are not only attractive, but they are also less
likely to harbor dirt and bacteria, which can contribute to infection. Furthermore,
proper nail clipping technique can assist in the prevention of common problems
such as hangnails and ingrown toenails.
Steps in Proper Trimming of Nails according to Dr. Lipner of the American
Academy of Dermatology :
Soften the nails. The best time to trim your nails is immediately after
1 taking a bath or shower. However, if that isn’t possible, soak your nails
in lukewarm water for a few minutes to soften them.

Gather the proper tools. Use a nail clipper or nail scissors for your
2 fingernails and a toenail clipper for your toenails. Remember to disinfect
your tools monthly. To disinfect them, soak a small scrub brush in a bowl
o f 70 to 90 percent isopropyl alcohol and then use the brush to scrub your nail
clippers or nail scissors. Afterwards, rinse the tools in hot water and dry them
completely before putting them away.

To trim your fingernails, cut almost straight across the nail. Use a nail
3 file or emery board to slightly round the nails at the corners, as this will
help keep them strong and prevent them from catching on things like
clothing or furniture.

To reduce your chances of getting an ingrown toenail, cut straight

4 across when trimming your toenails. Toenails grow more slowly than
fingernails, so you may find that you do not need to trim these nails as
often.

Smooth uneven or rough edges using a nail file or emery board. Always
5 file the nail in the same direction, as filing back and forth can weaken
your nails.

Leave your cuticles alone. Cuticles protect the nail root, so it’s important
6 to avoid cutting your cuticles or pushing them back. When you trim or cut
your cuticles, it’s easier for bacteria and other germs to get inside your
body and cause an infection. If you get a nail infection, it can sometimes take
a long time to clear.

Moisturize after trimming to help keep your nails flexible. This is

7 especially important when the air is dry, as dry nails split more easily.

Consult a dermatologist, if you notice a change in the color, texture, or

shape of your nail. Nails are a reflection of your overall health. While some
8 changes are harmless, others could be a sign of a disease, such as mela-
noma, or an infection, such as a nail fungal infection.
