Tut - Sheet 6

This document contains 10 problems related to probability and statistics. The problems cover topics like the normal distribution, binomial distribution, and their applications. Specifically, the problems ask students to calculate probabilities for scenarios involving random variables like weights of bags, lifetimes of electrical components, test scores, and precipitation totals. They are also asked to determine mean and standard deviation values and compare random variables.

1 A bag of cookies is underweight if it weighs less than 500 pounds. The filling process
dispenses cookies with weight that follows the normal distribution with mean 504 pounds and
standard deviation 4 pounds. If you select 5 bags randomly, what is the probability that
exactly 2 of them will be underweight?

2 The life length X of an electrical component follows an exponential distribution. There are 2
processes by which component may be manufactured. The expected life length of the
component is 100 hrs. if process I is used to manufacture, while 150 hrs. if process II is used.
The cost of manufacturing a single component by process I is Rs. 10 /- while it is Rs. 20 /- for
process II. Moreover, if the components last less than the guaranteed life of 200 hrs., a loss of
Rs. 50/- is to borne by the manufacturer. Which process is advantageous to manufacturer ?

3 (i) If Xi ∼ NP ......, n, arePindependent, then prove that their linear
combination ni=1 ai Xi ∼ N ( ni=1 ai µi , ni=1 a2i σi2 ).

4 Suppose that the load of an airplane wing is a random variable X with N (1000, 14400)
distribution. The maximum load that the wing can withstand is a random variable Y which
is N (1260, 2500). If X and Y are independent, find the probability that the load encountered
by the wing is less than its critical load.

5 (a) Use the fact that the binomial distribution can be approximated by the normal
distribution to find the probability that Binomial r. v. X = 13, where X is the number of
heads in 20 flips of a fair coin.
(b) For Binomial r.v., find c such that P (X < c) = 0.90, with n = 300 and p = 41 .

6 There are 600 Economics students in the post-graduate classes of a university, and the
probability for any student to need a copy of a particular book from the university library on
any day is 0.05. How many copies of the book should be kept in the university library so that
the probability may be greater than 0.90 that none of the students needing a copy from the
library has to come back disappointed ? (Use normal approximation to the binomial
distribution.)

7 Let X denote the time ion hours needed to locate and correct a problem in the software that
governs the timing of traffic lights in the down town area of a large city. Assume that X is
normally distributed with mean 10 hours and variance 9.
(a) Find the probability that the next problem will require at most 15 hours to find and
correct.
(b) The fastest 5% of repairs take at most how many hours to complete ?

8 In a normal distribution, 7% of the items are under 35 and 89% are under 63. Calculate the
mean and standard deviation of distribution.

9 If X follows normal distribution with mean 2
and variance 4, then compute P (X 2 − X < 6).

10 Suppose that diameter of the disc is normally distributed with mean 39.8 and SD 2.05 inches
respectively. What is the probability that of 20 randomly selected discs exactly 5 have
diameter of at least 40 inches ?

11 Data indicates that the yearly precipitation in a city is a normal random variable with mean
of 12.08 inches and a SD of 3.1 inches.

(a) Find the probability that the total precipitation during the next two years will exceed 25
inches.
(b) Find the probability that next year’s precipitation will exceed that of the following year
by more than 3 inches. Assume that the precipitation totals for the next 2 years are
independent.
