1 MATERIAL MASTER – CONFIGURATION & CREATION

MATERIAL MASTER
INTRODUCTION

▪ Material master data is the company’s central source of material specific data.
It is used in all areas of logistics. All areas such as purchasing, inventory
management, materials planning and invoice verification can jointly use the
stored data.
▪ Data stored in material master is required for many activities, including the
following i.e.
✓ Purchasing for ordering purposes
✓ Inventory management for posting goods movement and physical
inventory management
✓ Accounting for material valuation
✓ Materials planning for materials requirement planning
▪ Organizational levels at which we can maintain material master are as follows:
✓ Data at client level (Whole enterprise): Material No, text and group
✓ Data at plant level: Purchasing, MRP & forecasting data
✓ Data at storage location: Storage bin description & picking area
▪ Material type
When creating a material master record, we must choose a material type and
industry sector to assign the material. Materials with same properties are
assigned to same material type.
Examples of Material types are Raw materials, semi-finished goods and
finished goods.
▪ Material type controls the following functions:
✓ Type of Number assignment (Internal or External)
✓ Permissible number range intervals
✓ User department view i.e. specific view proposed for a material
✓ Procurement type i.e. in-house production or external
▪ Industry sector
✓ Industry sector determines which screens are displayed and in which
order i.e. Screen selection.
✓ Which industry specific fields are displayed on each screen i.e. field
selection.
