Solar Radiation (Irradiance ) and
Solar Insolation (Irradiation)
Solar Radiation (Irradiance ) and
Solar Insolation (Irradiation)
Solar radiation is the energy from the sun that
reaches the Earth`s Surface.
Solar Radiation (Irradiance ) and
Solar Insolation (Irradiation)
• Irradiance is density of solar radiation incident on a
given surface.
• It is expressed in units of Watts per square meter
(W/m2) or KW per square meter (kW/m2) .
At the top of Atmospheric Layer,
At the top of Atmospheric Layer, Solar radiation has an
intensity of 1367 watts per square meter (W/m2).
This value is known as the Solar Constant
At any location on the Earth`s Surface, Solar radiation
intensity (W/m2) changes with the sun elevation angle (α).

Solar Radiation (Irradiance ) and
Solar Insolation (Irradiation)

• Insolation is the total amount of solar

radiation energy received on a given surface
area during a given time. (e.g. 1 hour, day,
month, year)
• It is also called solar irradiation and
expressed as “Whr/m2"
Daily Solar Insolation (Irradiation) is the area under the Daily
